I think it's really cool when this is applied during a performance, it's just complicated to mark and apply the technique of letting the stick bounce. I believe I sent you a song from an anime that had this same technique, which I thought was really cool.

Oh which song was it, sorry, I wanna know again! This technique is actually quite rare in anime songs, usually single strokes do the job even the faster ones. But I have to use this for some parts of Zankyosanka haha. 🙌

Rather than letting the stick bounce twice I'd encourage snapping with the fingers to create the second bounce. This will create a stronger rebound (evening out the sound) and make the technique more effective on low rebound surfaces such as toms.

Keep your pinky on the stick at lower tempos. And generally you don’t want to open your hand so much. While sometimes it is necessary, it’s better technique to keep your and a little more closed. Especially at higher tempos.

Spend some time practicing your rolls open (slow) closed (fast) open (slow). At a slower speed you'll use wrist for both strokes. As you speed up rebound will take over and you'll use fingers. Heights will go down as you go faster. We should drum together and pick each others brains.

I use my wrist to give me more power so that it's not just rebound dependent and when I go fast, I want to hear the power of every stroke clearly too. I don't play my doubles like that all the time, especially in songs when it's just an embellishment. Check out Ari Hoenig, Baard Kolstad (very different looking grips but they're legendary drummers) and check out Chris Turner (he uses his ENTIRE leg all the time but he's insanely clean and fast at 260bpm and above AND he's POWERFUL, no need for triggers and samples).

So a big lesson I learned from my time in Drumline and College Percussion Lessons is how to clean up my doubles. The speed is incredibly important, but even more so is the spacing of the rebound. This is the practice formula I still use for incredibly clean doubles: 1. Warmup at slow-medium-fast tempos 2. Close your eyes and listen to your doubles. Can you hear a dynamic difference between your hands? Between the first and second note on each hand? 3. Play with a metronome matching your speed exactly. Are your rebounds landing too early or too late? 4. Ask these questions and make adjustments to your finger tightness, drum height, fulcrum, posture, stance/sitting balance, relaxation to compensate. 5. It takes time! Don't give up. Often times you can easily hear the difference between singles and doubles because drummers do not spend the time to clean up their sound! Spend just 5 minutes of every practice session to really hone your sound and I promise the difference is technically small, but genuinely huge! P.S. Another huge tip is to work on triple stroke and even quad/quint stroke rolls. They develop your stick control like no other!
@ArtOfDrummingHQ

Those are fantastic tips 💯🤘 sound is very important for serious drummers
@nemataman
@nemataman 2 жыл бұрын
Be careful not to emphasize the first stroke. In order to get clean and even strokes at faster speeds, the emphasis need to be on the second stroke. Practice at slow speeds and when you go faster, the strokes will even themselves out.

Appreciate the advice! I know my pinky comes out sometimes but it doesn't give me a problem because I can play all the stuff that I want to and continue to push my own boundaries. Also it's something that I can control if I need them tighter or looser (Look at my practice pad workouts for single and double strokes) Anyway appreciate you sounding out the advice Cheers Joris!

One of the first things a professional instructor will teach you is not to let your fingers drop- You lose control- technique- Also your hand should be positioned so that your palms are facing downward and the tops of your hands are facing upward, When playing a groove on the high hat or on the ride symbol or whatever, this does not matter as much-

Thomas Lang is famous for teaching what you've said and I know his technique too. I never did say this is the best advice, and I dislike any sort of "best advice". There's no one best advice ever for any situation and person. I also never said this is the ONLY method, or THE method. I titled the video "good" because it works great for me and I can play everything I want from Animals as Leaders to Anime pop songs. Also before soliciting advice with an anonymous online name like most people do, at least come out and have video proof of your own completely even and not wavy technique, as well as how you use it on the drumset. I trust Thomas Lang. I don't trust keyboard warriors with zero proof. And you don't see Thomas Lang beating down other people's technique. There's so many different ways to play well, even ones who use less than optimal technique. Cheers R 😀

I started playing again in mid January of this year and my double stroke roll is about 215-230 in 16ths, depending on how much I warm up. Is this considered fast from a perspective of a pro?

😂 First, do you have a video of yourself playing at this speed and power on a soft pillow(no rebound). If no, you deserve to be ashamed of yourself because you're just a keyboard warrior. Talk is cheap, you have no proof that you can do it. 2nd, if you do have video proof. You should also be ashamed of your elitist mindset, and overly inflated ego. So what if you're better than other drummers, they have a bigger heart than you, and you can't stop us from drumming anyway 😂 so keep trying at your own risk.
