Thank you Sir for your great work. I was fortunate to have a scrap 3in1 machine from which I took this attachment. And only minor modification to the unit and no modification to my lathe at all.

Steve, it's been a year since i commented here. Since then I've viewed s a shit load of options for milling on a lathe. You have my humble apologies. I must have had a very bad day when I posted that pointless comment. It was pointless because I don't think anyone gives a damn if you call it a midi or a mini. Fact is I've since watched most, if not all of your milling attachment videos and you deserved much better than my lame comment. My lathe is an old 60's vintage South Bend heavy 10 but I think you have covered this topic so thoroughly that I now have enough information to choose my milling attachment along will the myriad of good mounting options to fill most lathe milling operations. Thank YOU! A crass yank! ;-) Wakodahatchee Chris

Your projects and ability to create new tools for the lathe is never a disappointment, always very informative and easy to follow instructions. Thanks for the time put into the videos and work to get them out for everyone to see.

Hi Steve, I know this video is from ages ago but I just thought I'd write to you and let you know that I have finally saved up enough to buy a double swivel vertical milling slide with vice from Chronos for my Chinese mini lathe (they ran out of stock 6 months ago). I'm in the process of fitting the 10mm plate to the cross slide and fitting the mill slide base to it. I can see this opening a whole new window of uses for my lathe, not least the milling of new tool holders from the aluminium blocks that I cut ready some 12 months ago! Thank you, Steve, for providing me with the knowledge and confidence to do this, your videos are an inspiration to us all.

Hello Steve. I have just completed this milling attachment, it works very well and is much cheaper than buying a mill of course. Now I need to reduce the free play in the cross slide/saddle, as the milling operations show it up - will study your video on the upgrade. I have carried out one or two of your lathe improvements. Keep up the good work!

That's a good idea! Another mod to do! Trouble is I need to get on with the real project I had in mind rather than spending all my time just improving the tooling ; -) At least now I have half decent milling capability.

I followed your instructions Steve thanks, and just finished. All is good and accurate. Found a 9.5mm drill did the job as I don't have a 3/8", and used the 6mm holes as guides; a perfect fit on the Chronos milling vice. Also took your advice of fitting 2 more gib screws to the cross slide. The 10mm steel took some polishing, no-one seems to sell anything as good as yours! I may turn a couple of custom 8mm studs.

Hi Steve, thanks for this vid. I've completed the same today, just a couple of modifications... My Mini lathe came with M6 tapped holes at the back of the cross slide for a travelling steady, so I used those to mount the palette. Also I aligned the bolts attaching the palette to the cross slide swivel disk at 90 degrees from how you did it, so the four mounting bolts are in a rectangular formation. It really does seem to be a rigid setup. Just made my first passes with an 8 mm end mill and the finish looks good with virtually no chatter. On to do your additonal gib locking screws next!
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Andy, Thanks. It sounds like you made a great job of that. It is surprising how rigid it is. I have been using mine today and it works great. I have one last upgrade to do to the pallet. I'm going to drill a hole directly above the carriage lock allen bolt for a 'T' allen key to lock. Regards Steve

Hi another great idea checked the price will have to save the pennies up.Fitted extra adjustment screws to the cross slide some time back I found it helped to keep the gib. in adjustment over the range of the slide

Steve, thanks for another great video! I just finished mounting the Myford Double Swivel Vertical Milling Slide onto my mini-lathe. The dimensions of the slide was different so I had to recalculate the distance of the VMS relative to the cross slide. Did you use a foot of a table or something to ensure the chuck/milling bit and vise are aligned?

Hi Wilson. I square the vice up on the front of the jaws, touching the face of the vice before tightening it down fully.

Hi Steve, I've been following your tutorials for a while now and I'm just finishing the task of mounting a dual swivel vertical milling slide onto my Colchester Chipmaster cross-slide. Excellent upgrade. Can you tell me which machine vice you used in this setup and where you sourced it please? To mount the vice, it looks like you drilled through the vice body and used a couple of cap-head bolts with T-nuts underneath, correct? Thanks, Martin Archer

Hi I think it's 75mm round vice bought from Chronos.uk. they usually sell two different sized ones and this one is the largest one I think. I haven't looked on their site lately though. Regards Steve

Greetings from Canada. Enjoyable and informative. May I ask if this (milling) setup has 'superseded' your previous approach with the angle plate? Or, in other words, do you use one more than the other? Thank you.

How much deflection are you getting with all the extra moving parts? Or is it negligible on that tiny lathe. I was thinking about adding on to my 13” lathe and using it to drive a CNC 3kw spindle.
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 5 жыл бұрын
Hi I don't notice any deflection. As long as the gib is adjusted correctly. It would be fine for something like that.

what size slide is that I want to get the correct one? How big of metal meterial could be milled on that slide in your mini lathe?
@SteveJordan
@SteveJordan 5 жыл бұрын
Its the copy of the Myford milling slide. You could hold whatever fits on the face, but the Chinese Mini Lathe is very restricted in cross slide travel so obviously it has limitations.....its too much to for me to calculate and give specific measurements. You would have to see the lathe travel limitation and check out slide dimensions and movement specification, to see if it will be suitable for your needs.

Randell Jones Randell I live in the eastern USA and have ordered several things from Bang Good .com I have always been pleased with there products so far. It usually takes me anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks for delivery. Most of the things I have ordered has been for a lathe. Good luck hope this helps.

Hi Randell, Chronos do ship worldwide but obviously the shipping costs would be high for these heavy items. I'm surprised that someone in the USA hasn't got these items for sale? If someone in the USA were to import these tools to sell them for reasonable prices like Chronos, they would have an excellent business. Most of these tool are now made in India and China and imported. Regards Steve

Paul S 1 second ago lately I've been seeing more advanced vises and attachments for lathes and mills coming out of India. I'm tempted to get one, but know at those prices there has to be some cost reduction and quality issues. Probably good for mini-lathes as the need for .0001 accuracy is seldom on them. Thank you for showing us how to do! This gets me thinking about how to vertically mount a rotary table and/or XY table on my G8688

Is myford milling slide made in India now ? I mean does myford in England still exist? I just got one of those India myford slides. Made by bluefox. And it's not too well machined. I'm disappointed in the India manufacturing of this. The tee slots are way off canted misalignment , if fact there is not a properly machined surface except the table. Can you still buy the good old myford slide from England? I just checked and yes it is still made in the UK. If I had to do over I would have got the high quality UK one. I just recently became aware that myford England shut there factory down sometime around 2011. However, Chronos sells the slde and must have a supplier. The one I got on Ebay by bluefox from India is poorly manufactured.
