Dual wielding with long, or two handed weapons has significant disadvantages. Dual wielding is meant for a single one-handed weapon and a shorter companion weapon, or two shorter weapons. The systems I'm talking about were mostly used in civilian combat. Rapier and Dagger, Filipino martial arts, Etc. On the battlefield, a shield is a better idea. shield full sized shield was not a common civilian armament. But a buckler was a little more manageable. Usually, a second shorter weapon, like a dagger, was much more convenient for every day wear.

I'd much rather have a shield in the other hand. Useful against * spear * as you mentioned. But also, what about arrows? Are you really gonna deflect a rain of arrows with your two flimsy swords? And what about short and heavy weapons? You can't parry/deflect/block those weapons as effectively with a sword as you can with a shield. It's almost like there's a reason why most people in battle had a shield of some sort. Heck, peasants preferred a literal plank in the other hand over another weapon.

I'm for the Grass Shield personally. The stamina regeneration is super handy, especially when paired with being able to relax your guard between going just into (and then back out of) your Winged Spears superior reach. Then the Estoc or Bandits knife makes a good backup if you need to get in closer for some reason. Praise the Sun.

@herbderbler1585
@herbderbler1585 Жыл бұрын
On the battlefield, sure. In everyday carry, a sword and dagger or two shorter swords is much easier than a big shield. Obviously sword and buckler is a great EDC for ye olden days as well, but even bucklers can be a pain. Imagine walking around with a pot lid strapped to your belt or your back all day. A large knife isn't much less annoying, but it is also useful for other common tasks, whereas a buckler is mostly useless outside of combat.
@annoyedmarine1578
@annoyedmarine1578 Жыл бұрын
@@herbderbler1585 m8 you are not considering dual fucking wielding as a method of self defense anywhere outside of your home or a battlefield of some kind. Your ass is not walking to the park packing a pair of shortblades in your trousers and not being handed some form of charge or fine. Knives are not something that any fighter with a brain dual wields. Thats how you die.
@herbderbler1585
@herbderbler1585 Жыл бұрын
@@annoyedmarine1578 first of all, I dunno how it is where you live, but where I live I can open carry a rifle, a pistol, a sword, a big-ass knife, whatever. It's possible you can get karen'd and the cops will come hassle you, but no laws are being broken so no fines or charges are coming unless you act a fool, or you get crooked/ignorant cops, in which case just play it cool, don't die and score some sweet lawsuit money in about eighteen months. second, if you're so sure dual-wielding blades is completely useless, then why would anyone use it in the home or on the battlefield? Third, literally no one here is talking about modern self-defense. This is all about the days when people routinely carried swords. Back then it was quite common to carry a sword and a dagger. European noblemen did this all the time. Samurai commonly carried a long and a short sword which accomplishes pretty much the same thing. There are endless examples of this throughout history so I don't know what you're even arguing against. It's just physically easier to schlep around a big knife than a big plate, so while bucklers were also very popular they were generally less popular for casual everyday carry. If you really want to talk about modern self-defense, find any CCW person packing a pistol and I guarantee they don't have a IIIA lexan buckler strapped to their back. They have a knife, because knives are useful as a backup plan and because they can also just be a knife and do knife tasks for the 99.9999% of your life when you're not defending yourself from an attack.

A dedicated strike with a heavier blade, such as a hand-and-a-halfer or a battleaxe, can easily blow past a blade parry. This is why footwork is the most important aspect regardless of which weapon you’re using.
@ethanowens473

That's what a cross block is for. You use both weapons to arrest the blow, then withdraw one weapon while maintaining a bind with the other, allowing for you to attack while holding their weapon at bay.

@@ethanowens473 sure, you could do that, but when you withdraw one weapon I’m not going to just stand there and wait, I’ll either press my advantage and push past or around your remaining guarding weapon, or I’ll stop back and wait for another opportunity. @@anakin2489 Well it depends on skill level. 2 weapons are really hard to manage so generally someone competent enough to handle them is also skilled enough not to lose their weapon so easily. The biggest mistake you can make here is static blocking. Fighting a single two handed weapon its pretty easy for them to power through a hard block, but it remains easy to redirect them. This is why you basically have to parry with double weapons, or your defensive weapon needs to offer superior leverage as can be seen with a dagger.

Using dual daggers wrecklessly can be an extremely powerful tool. Like, if you’ve got a chipped or serrated dagger blade set, and you’re gonna go fight, bring those, as they claw under the skin on hit and could theoretically rip their skin right off, leaving your opponent with loose nerve endings against the air so they’re in constant agony.

There are a few other benefits: 1) You can sacrifice one of the weapons; in particular to get a bind with the opponent and engage him with your primary weapon. If you can't quickly end it, you can keep the secondary blade in contact to really annoy the hell out of him... (hindering him from moving freely and having an early warning system) 2) feints become far more effective 3) you can parry almost as well as with a two-handed weapon.

I started playing a fantasy larp when I was 16. I had also been in Kung fu classes before that. Turns out that if you treat each weapon like an arm/fist, you can be an absolute savage.

Shouldn't be a surprise. This the whole basis behind using a shield at close range, too.

Count Dooku may have thought this was unsportsmanlike, as would someone with certain kinds of IRL Fencing Training, but this was the Worst Nightmare of a Makashi Master.

Best commentary about unsportsmanlike stuff was when one karate guy attacked dude who was playing poker with me on camp. He just replied by groin kick and when karate wannabe complained about he he said they are not in dojo. BTW as far as I know attacking person w/o reason is unsportsmanlike anyway

This is why I mainly train to evade and parry/counter. While I know being responsive always puts me at a disadvantage, I'm quick with my wrist work and dexterity is above average I'd say. My footwork needs allot of work, but I also throw in hand to hand combat as an initial counter. I also try to engage static blocks as much as possible and move their weapon into a useless position. Whats funny is the 2 "Swords" youre training with are about as long as the 2 "knives" I carry regularly lol.

Funny enough the same concept is true of holding a shield or buckler. Even a gauntlet or literally a piece of fabric is useful in performing combos in a competitive or mortal combat scenario.

Gannicus with the dual Gladius' in Spartacus had some of the most badass fights in that show and does that double stab, and also a single tempo where he kneels down and parrys with his left hand up high holding that sword horizontal while simultaneously thrust his right hand sword straight and slightly upwards. If he did a double tempo, he wouldn't be able to block the strike but when he skewers the dude with his other sword at the same time then that attack ends up being easy to block cause you know, he just got run through a couple vital organs and that gotta either stop or highly weaken the attack. Personally I'm full Mermillo, I'm not nimble enough for dual welding

Is there a form of fencing that uses a dagger in the off hand? I feel like that would be so cool to watch and add a lot of dynamic interplay and new options into a very old sport.

One of my favorite things we used to do in my fencing class was like this, but more complicated. My instructor was ambidextrous. He’d put on two underarm guards, two gloves, and grab two foils. Then he would fence the whole class. He had five lives, a hit against him taking away one life. The rest of us had one life. There were about seven to ten students every time we did this, and we would fence him three on one. So him with two swords vs three of us with one sword each, swapping someone in whenever one of us got hit until we ran out of people. We never beat him

Another reason is for rapier and dagger or arming sword, is so if someone gets in your face or close enough that the rapier isn't too useful, you csn still defend yourself with the arming sword.
