Dual wielding with long, or two handed weapons has significant disadvantages. Dual wielding is meant for a single one-handed weapon and a shorter companion weapon, or two shorter weapons. The systems I'm talking about were mostly used in civilian combat. Rapier and Dagger, Filipino martial arts, Etc. On the battlefield, a shield is a better idea. shield full sized shield was not a common civilian armament. But a buckler was a little more manageable. Usually, a second shorter weapon, like a dagger, was much more convenient for every day wear.

I mean, a shield does this twice as well with half the required skill.
@herbderbler1585 Жыл бұрын
On the battlefield, sure. In everyday carry, a sword and dagger or two shorter swords is much easier than a big shield. Obviously sword and buckler is a great EDC for ye olden days as well, but even bucklers can be a pain. Imagine walking around with a pot lid strapped to your belt or your back all day. A large knife isn't much less annoying, but it is also useful for other common tasks, whereas a buckler is mostly useless outside of combat.
@annoyedmarine1578 Жыл бұрын
@@herbderbler1585 m8 you are not considering dual fucking wielding as a method of self defense anywhere outside of your home or a battlefield of some kind. Your ass is not walking to the park packing a pair of shortblades in your trousers and not being handed some form of charge or fine. Knives are not something that any fighter with a brain dual wields. Thats how you die.
@herbderbler1585 Жыл бұрын
@@annoyedmarine1578 first of all, I dunno how it is where you live, but where I live I can open carry a rifle, a pistol, a sword, a big-ass knife, whatever. It's possible you can get karen'd and the cops will come hassle you, but no laws are being broken so no fines or charges are coming unless you act a fool, or you get crooked/ignorant cops, in which case just play it cool, don't die and score some sweet lawsuit money in about eighteen months. second, if you're so sure dual-wielding blades is completely useless, then why would anyone use it in the home or on the battlefield? Third, literally no one here is talking about modern self-defense. This is all about the days when people routinely carried swords. Back then it was quite common to carry a sword and a dagger. European noblemen did this all the time. Samurai commonly carried a long and a short sword which accomplishes pretty much the same thing. There are endless examples of this throughout history so I don't know what you're even arguing against. It's just physically easier to schlep around a big knife than a big plate, so while bucklers were also very popular they were generally less popular for casual everyday carry. If you really want to talk about modern self-defense, find any CCW person packing a pistol and I guarantee they don't have a IIIA lexan buckler strapped to their back. They have a knife, because knives are useful as a backup plan and because they can also just be a knife and do knife tasks for the 99.9999% of your life when you're not defending yourself from an attack.

A dedicated strike with a heavier blade, such as a hand-and-a-halfer or a battleaxe, can easily blow past a blade parry. This is why footwork is the most important aspect regardless of which weapon you’re using.

If you can't quickly end it, you can keep the secondary blade in contact to really annoy the hell out of him... (hindering him from moving freely and having an early warning system) 2) feints become far more effective 3) you can parry almost as well as with a two-handed weapon.

One of my favorite things we used to do in my fencing class was like this, but more complicated. My instructor was ambidextrous. He’d put on two underarm guards, two gloves, and grab two foils. Then he would fence the whole class. He had five lives, a hit against him taking away one life. The rest of us had one life. There were about seven to ten students every time we did this, and we would fence him three on one. So him with two swords vs three of us with one sword each, swapping someone in whenever one of us got hit until we ran out of people. We never beat him

The 400 English Longbowmen in the distance- "Good luck Parrying and responding to this in one action!" Hence why double sword is a dualist technique and not a battlefield one.

Good info. Bruce Lee also incorporated this in hand techniques. Most styles had a one two timing when it came to blocking then punch, JKD does both at the same time, except it's usually parry instead of blocking

Another reason is for rapier and dagger or arming sword, is so if someone gets in your face or close enough that the rapier isn't too useful, you csn still defend yourself with the arming sword.

It’s basically like having a shield/parrying stick in you offhand that you can also attack with.

I really like these sword shorts, but I also would like some axe ones too. Axes are my personal favorite due to the versatility to them.

Reminds me that Skallagrim said he would take two swords over one. But a shield and sword over dual wielding.
