SMB Multichannel allows you to easily double or even quadruple your performance to your Synology NAS without buying 10GbE networking equipment. This allows you to use multiple network connections (including 10GbE ones) when connecting to a single computer! This means you can take 2x 1GbE connections to your NAS and computer and get 2x the transfer speeds compared to before!

Been using smb multichannel with synology since 6.2 days and still works amazingly for me. With quad gigabit + sata ssds i've gotten speed tests in the 400MB/sec range (write consistency of that speed is highly dependent on the SSDs themselves but read speads tend to be consistent). I've even managed to get 1.5GB/sec with dual 10Gbe multichannel (again, sata ssd volume, 3 ssd's in SHR), two 10Gbe links on synology and two 10Gbe links on a windows client.

Combining this with other upgrades to speed up our outdated 920+ NASes You’ve mentioned (like2,5Gbps adapters etc) do You think it’s possible to expand 2LAN connections with extra lines created from USB ?? So theoretically we could output at least 3LAN “channels” from single NAS (with 1Gbps adapter)? Do You think this might work?? 🧐😅😅

My plan is to start with 3 12tb drives and have 3tb of m.2 cache and use a 10gb Ethernet port with a MacBook Pro m2. Do you think this will bottleneck and my MacBook will suffer in performance? Really don't want to invest this much if it's not going to work out. Thought about a DAS bay but I'd like to be able to expand as I go, and potentially even add different size hd down the line. Appreciate any help and thank you so much for all of your wisdom!

Thanks for the SMB-MC demo. Have you verified these speeds going in the opposite direction - i.e., copy the large file from the PC's SSD back to the NAS? I've read reports where SMB-MC may only increase speeds in one direction (NAS --> PC but not the other way around).

This works from my Windows PC using asingle 2.5Gb USB interface to DS1520+ connected to two ethernet ports, but not from my MBP 14" M3 using a similar2.5Gb USB interface. Seems like MacOS does not work with SMB multichannel using a single higher speed adapter > 1Gpbs. It works fine on MacOS to my Synology connected to its 2.5Gbps USB interface which I added on previous before I tried multichannel. In a house with 2 laptops (1 mac, 1 PC) using WiFi, would adding a switch between a router with two cables to a DS423+ (or hopefully DS223+) have any tangible improvement? 2. I am using a Synology DS723+ with 2 cables plugged into my Router, so no switch. Those connections were set up as a link aggregation but, in an attempt to double my speed, I deleted the link aggregation and turned on SMB as per your instructions. Unfortunately, there was no overall speed difference and both of those still add up to about 120 MB/s with each of them fluctuating between 50 and 70 while adding up to a total of 120 MB/s. So it didn't seem to work in my case on a Windows 11 Pro machine. Do I need to turn on SMB on my computer like you did on your Mac?

Mr. SpaceRex, as always thanks for the FANTASTIC video. Can you clarify a few things? In your video you have TWO 1 GB Ethernet adapters on your MacBook. Does this work equally well when the Mac has ONE 2.5 GbE adapter [and Synology has two 1 GbE connections]? For instance, I have just gotten the $40 Anker A8316 PowerExpand USB-C to 2.5 Gbps Ethernet Adapter. And I would love to be able to double my speeds to my DS1813+. Would this work plug and play once the SMB Multi channel is enable on 1813+? Also, I have always thought that when you have MULTIPLE Ethernet connected to a NAS.. Let’s say a 10GbE and ALSO a 1 GBe [for WOL], that you would have to connect to NAS via the IP address of the 10 GbE connection? But, it seems in your video, I misunderstood and if I enter a CONNECT to server of smb:DS1821/Videos that it would AUTOMATICALLY pick the fastest connection. So, MacBook has WiFi and 2.5 GbE connections it will always connect via the FASTEST… automatically… Is that correct? You have to have at least 2 NICs on each system*, and preferably the same number on each. For example, 3x 1Gbe NICs connected to 2x 1Gbe NICs actually reduces throughput to 1.5Gb total. * There is a potential boost to CPU core utilization if a system with 1 NIC which supports RSS is connected to a system with 2 NICs. However, this is relatively marginal, and does not increase throughput.

Considering the competing benefits of link aggregation (serving multiple users) and smb multichannel (faster single user)… would it make sense to configure the four 1Gbe ports on my DS1515+ as a pair of 2Gbe bonds and enable multichannel? It’s connected to a Ubiquiti-based 10Gb network with a couple of 10Gb clients (main desktop and my ESXi virtual server) plus a pile of 1Gb clients. I’m trying to balance increasing the transfer speeds for the 10Gb clients AND still support the ability to stream Jellyfin/SageTV media to multiple simultaneous clients. Thanks!

I'm going to guess the most common setup everyone has would be as follows. A PC with 1x 2.5Gbps port. A switch with multiple 1Gbps ports. Synology NAS with 2x 1Gbps ports. Im guessing there would be no increase to throughput in this scenario, because the PC is connected to the switch at 1Gbps (so would be better off setting up Link Aggregation). If the switch was upgraded to 2.5Gbps, then I assume SMB3 Multichannel would work and should see a throughput to the PC of 2Gbps (2x 1Gbps from the NAS)? I am also confused with Synology's documentation. The forum shows a picture with the client having 1x 2.5Gbps network card and NAS with 4x 1Gbps connections and states "When the client is using a single high-speed connection (10GbE) and the server is using multiple lower-speed network connections (1GbE) or the other way around". But on their Documentation/website it says "SMB3 Multichannel can be enabled if both the client and server have multiple network adapters"', so what is it? Do BOTH need to have 2 or more network cards for this to work?

My Windows PC is connected to the 8 Gbits with a 10 gbits PCIe interface. Activating SMB multichannel works but i'm still stuck to 1 Gbits tranfert speed (113 MB / sec). Any idea ? Do i have to activate something in Windows ? Thanks again Edit : I found the solution, my 10 Gbits SFP+ network card wasn't compatible, i had to add my internal ethernet to the game, and now everything's ok. Synology : SMB3 Multichannel can be enabled if both the client and server have multiple network adapters. However, if you have a single network adapter, you can still enable multichannel as long as the adapter supports RSS. Note that if you use a single adapter without RSS, there is no difference in the SMB performance

SMB multichannel is meant to increase the throughput for a single client for smb service. lacp/bond is meant for entire system and all applications (multipe clients). I assume your plex server & media are all hosted on synology nas and you're planning to view the media on multiple devices, in which case you won't see any benefit of smb multichannel because its very unlikely you're going to saturate a 1GB connection while watching a movie even on full 4k resolution.

take my views with a grain of salt but I'd say that 99% of "clients" have a single NIC card and therefore will not benefit from SMB multi-channel. by comparison, link aggregation's goal is not to benefit a single client but rather to split multiple clients across the NAS's multiple NICs. It's true that clients with multiple NICs will gain greater throughput when using Multichannel to a NAS but only if other clients aren't already saturating these links. For this reason, I think Multichannel is great for some use cases but in most SMB cases the benefits of Link Aggregation are still probably more appropriate.

Synology released a package update to SMB for DSM 7.1 users over the last couple of days. Installed via Package Manager. Installed it yesterday. I am limited to a single 25G connection to each of my two Synology NASes however, so I don't expect to see any difference.

I don't think you will see any differences, to See difference you need 25GB 2 Nics in Synology and 2 25GBe in Computer, In theory 50GBe you should get but most likely bottle neck will be the the DSM will not be fast enough or your computer not fast enough, Did you mean 25GB or was it 2.5GBe ? I think most peoples scenario is a 2.5 GbE or 5 GbE or 10 GbE nic on a computer connected to a switch of same speed (10/5/2.5/1 GbE) and a synology with 2 or 4 pcs 1GbE nic´s. connected to that same switch. I have 2 computers, one with a 2.5 GbE and one with 10 GbE nic. A 10/5/2.5/1 GbE switch (NETGEAR XS508M) . A DS1520+ SMB multichannel enabled and connected with nic 1 and nic 2. My speed only went up from 110 MB/s to 125 MB/s. I use cat6a and cat7 on quite short distances. Maybe the switch is not capable of handeling this, but its not impressive!

This is interesting and I tried on Windows 11 with 2 Relatek cards, one 2.5g 8125 and GigE 8168 - both supports RSS according to Realtek website, the problem is that with the actual Win11 Realtek drivers NetAdapterCx RSS is not supported and as far as I understood RSS is the way to enable SMB Multichannel in Windows. I tried to install the Win10 NDIS drivers and RSS appears in the cards properties but somehow they don't work properly, so I'm stuck on to get this feature working. Any idea? Did you try on Win11?

@Cabinlab

SMB multichannel will force each NIC to the lowest common denominator. Therefore, even if it's "working", a client with multichannel enabled across 2.5Gbe + 1Gbe NICs will connect at maximum 1Gb + 1Gb = 2Gb. That can be a benefit if the server has 2x 1Gbe NICs, but would be simpler and faster to have 1x 2.5Gbe on both ends. RSS is only a benefit to CPU core utilization if connecting a system with 1x NIC to a system with 2x NICs. And in that case, it isn't actually providing multichannel across the link, only to the CPU of the system with 1x NIC

I don't understand your remarks that contrast SMB multichannel to link aggregation by saying that the former somehow goes against networking standards, Rex. I don't see how these standards could possibly forbid a client from establishing simultaneous TCP connections to multiple IP addresses that just happen to be different interfaces on the same machine. (Or in fact, even to different IP addresses on the same physical machine-VM networking does this...)
