The new Robert Eggers horror movie The Witch starts this director's 2016 with a bang, as Anya Taylor-Joy, Ralph Ineson and Kate Dickie star in this 2016 horror movie/character study which takes place in the 1630's New England. What was scary about this movie? It's atmosphere or it's extremely slow pace? The DT Crew elaborates!

Fun fact: the goat's real name is Charlie. The director absolutely hated working with him - the kids were great, the goat was a major pain in the ass. Wasn't even a trained goat. Charlie didn't want to do anything the director wanted him to do. Charlie had two modes: sleep/do nothing and attack Ralph Ineson. For some reason Charlie really, really hated Ralph Ineson. The feeling was mutual, because Charlie actually managed to injure Ralph when he rammed into him and dislodged a tendon in his ribs. Charlie is now happily retired on a farm somewhere.

Warning, spoiler comment! Ending was a let down? lol, ending was great. Also, they did show what the witch was doing, she was grinding up that baby and rubbing it on herself and her broom since that's part of their witchcraft to fly. Same with the end, the two twins were taken and that's what you saw at the end, them flying from the sacrifice of the twins....

Kory is confusing plot with story. The plot is extremely minimal, but the story and how we see the complete breakdown of a family making the most out of a simple plot, THAT is effective storytelling.

This was a great fucking movie, easily full price. The director had a vision for an authentic folk horror movie and he pulled it off. I don't know what corny ass plot twists the Koreys' wanted, but I'm glad the movie didn't have them. The story was great, and delivered with a subtlety that didn't insult the audience. A man who sees himself too righteous for a Puritan plantation drives his family into danger while slowly compromising his own values. A witch that is played straight, unambiguously evil, and legitimately dangerous. No cop outs, no slow mo, no kung fu fighting, no jump scares.

A thing to note is that during that time the Puritans believed the woods were evil and that satanic and deranged things were deep in there especially at night. (For example the Natives that inhabited the woods was “proof”) That’s why if you wandered into the woods for some reason it wasn’t a shock if you ended up being accused of witchcraft

So this is similar to The Revenant, except much more concentrated in terms of the slow pace to get the reward of the film. I'm interested in this film and it seems more like a psychological horror piece in line with a character study of a film.

Awesome review. These guys are totally funny. XD But at 6:50 he says stuff like "the darkness is just this creepy and sense of dread" and "this dark dimension that's forming here." You know, it's kind of strange that people use dark as if darkness is scary, evil, or unnatural. But there's no need to be afraid of the dark, and it is not a negative or unnatural thing. I never could understand it why some people do that. =/ This is just a philosophical thought, but if darkness has been around ever since the beginning of everything before anything else, is all around us, and there is even inside of us (I imagine it gets pretty dark inside of our bodies. I don't think we have light bulbs inside of us), isn't darkness one of the most natural and non-evil things out there? =o And night time is actually one of the most peaceful times for most people. It's when we rewind, recharge, and heal. Can't people just say what they mean? Could have easily said "grim" there, you know. l=/

I suppose to can be said that the term darkness is alluding to the unknown, and it's pretty obvious how many people that fear the unknown.

+Yay Me If you actually see the movie, you'll understand what they're talking about. They were indeed using it correctly because this is a film that does equate darkness to evil. This is a world where witches were exactly what Puritans thought they were, and you did well to stay away from the woods.
@JesseEnclave
@JesseEnclave 8 жыл бұрын
+Yay Me Fear of the dark has kept mankind alive from the beginning. Fire was not "invented" for cooking, you know. Humans have abysmal night vision, as well as sub par hearing and smell compared to other animals. We are utterly helpless in the dark, whereas other predators thrive in it. Fear of the dark may represent fear of the unknown now, but in the beginning it was much more literal, with good reason. It may not be as much of a big deal in the cities and in our homes, but if you ever find yourself outdoors in predator country at night? You'd best be afraid of the dark.

This movie is akin to John Carpenter's 'The Thing and Alex Garland's 'Annihilation.' The level of paranoia destroys all save one in each film. What's 'horrific' about this film is the reality of witch trials, witch hunts, and witch paranoia in a 'society' based on genocide, slavery, and the colonial oppression of women. What was scary about this film? The reality of living in the 1600s New England.

After all the horrible bull**** the daughter has to go through, that actually seemed like a happy ending to me. She gets to go party in the woods for a hundred years instead of being terrified every day that God is going to smite her. The final scene doesn't go on quite long enough for a total sense of resolution... but maybe that abruptness was in line with the rest of the movie's sense of unease.

Wow they really missed the mark here. This is a giant towering horror movie. So disturbing and dark that many people in my screening walked out and a few others had to laugh at it to protect there own psyche. This is not a movie for most people but it is my opinion that this is the scariest darkest most depressing horror film I've seen in a long time. I haven't been scared like this since I was a kid... It's scary in a way that is not fun. But if you don't get what I get out of it that's fine. For horror movie fans who are bored with jump scares and hipster horror... This is for you. It's sounds snobbish but this might only be for horror aficionados.

The accents were very thick, and the dialogue was completely different than what most people are used to! While it was interesting to hear actual people speak that way, it also took away from the movie cause I spent too much time scratching my head, figuring out what the hell they were trying to say. While I appreciate the fact that the dialogue was written that way, I would have liked it to be a bit more understandable. I did like the movie though and I'd give it a full price!

This movie had the problem of not fitting neatly into a genre. Some self-described movie critics can only view movies through their preconceived expectations. This film mostly remains suspenseful and creepy throughout but it never really gets terrifying, thus preconceived notions of horror cause the viewer to believe it's anti-climactic or unfulfilling. Does that mean it earns a C on the letter grading scale? Not on your f-ing life. It's an absolutely genius film that just so happens to also defy genre. Any critic with journalistic integrity would take more than a superficial look at this film and see the masterful craft with which it is constructed. That said, these Double Toasted guys are frequently hilarious and I'm sure their channel is financially successful. So congratulations on having a successful business model, I understand that you can't pay the rent with integrity.

Shit when the review for a horror movie is genuinely funny and the reviewers say that you can look at it as a comedy and still have a good time, it feels like the movie missed its mark. I trust the DT crew's opinion, agreed with them on a lot of stuff, but this a serious letdown. Especially since other critics are talking about it like it's on some Citizen Kane type of shit. Still going to look forward to it on VOD though, ain't going to get no theatrical release in Switzerland sadly.

It's scary in a way that is not fun.This is a step up in the genre. If your a horror movie buff or an artsy thoughtful movie person it's for you. It's not full of jump scares. Also it's deppresing as fuck. I have seen a lot of horror movies and this one is the best in recent memory.. Blows the babadook and insidious away and I loved those films.

When they remove the last protagonist, they also removed God -- the only thing that makes Satan, Witches' covens, and Black Magic plausible. You're asked to suspend disbelief for 90 minutes, then the only fact that makes the film premise remotely plausible is removed at the last second? If you put the Devil and Witches in your film, there had better be a benevolent omnipotent God that doesn't allow babies and children to be raped and killed for no damn good reason other than the director's ghost in the machine. Thomasin has no consequences for becoming Black Phillip's ho, other than getting a Satanic sugar daddy in a godless world. If Thomasin got to face the same trials alluded to by her mother of Christ's temptations in the desert by the Devil as she tried to save her twin siblings on the way back to the town through the forest, it might've been more than a strange, farcical half-feminist half-racist parable. Everything else but the ending had a lot of potential, all wasted. Saving the film from itself would've been as simple as allowing Thomasin to martyr herself saving her siblings; end at the beginning, with a trial -- the daughter answering for the sins of the father, selflessly. The greater evil wouldn't be Phillip & Co., rather US, humanity that facilitates it. The town going hysteric and convicting Thomasin despite her siblings testimony . . . the man who traded for the Mother's Silver Cup for hunting traps (presumably the same as brother Phillip) could have appeared at the trial, testifying against her (male witch: warlock?) . . . taking custody of the Twins; the Devil actually being the leader of the town, the Judge who ostracized their family in the first place. Wouldn't that have something to actually say about human nature, the problem of evil, its source? Such a missed opportunity with the material, should've written itself. Suppose it did, up until the very end; should've taken a risk being a longer film to flesh these things out imo.

To get the witchy scenes you need to know a bit about superstition folklore (not the Wiccan stuff, the propaganda). But if they'd explained that stuff it might've come across as an exposition dump. Hard call on that.

I do not see the hype behind this movie. I've seen this, Hereditary and Midsommer from A24 and this was the only film I didn't like

I don't think that not being able to understand the dialect and needing subtitles is grounds to mark a movie down. Would you mark a foreign language film down for this reason? To me it's a bit like saying you don't like watching tennis because the ball moves too fast for you to keep up. That's a terrible analogy but it's the one that springs to mind.

Why would I watch a foreign language film without subtitles?

I thought the acting was amazing, but everything else about it, I didn't like. lol Idk, maybe I'm too dumb for The Witch. I also had struggled understanding the actors sometimes. And the ending, wtf was that?
