The Doug and Pat Show

8 жыл бұрын

Yeah we know, we've played some LP Standards on other shows but not all of the original series from the very first in 1952 to the last SG style in 1963. We have them all and we play them all back to back sprinkling in all the snappy patter you expect and maybe some you don't. Warning: we did have to use the Magic Sword Canes to go back in time again but we're back now and doing just fine.

Bro, I never thought I would like P90s and did not care for Goldtops. After searching for conversions and realizing I could buy my original 53 for less money, I bought it. Man, I am so pleased with the tone. They are so clear and can get pretty rowdy when you need them to. I am very happy with them.

@@jonv5489my dream guitar has always been a 56 gold top that had been routed for humbuckers (bc it would lower the price..& bc I like HBs). But as the years go on & the more I hear P90s, the more they grow on me. Nowadays, if I found an old LP w/ a tuneOmatic and P90s, I would take it and leave it as is. However, being a lefty, I have never seen one turn up that was for sale..and I'm not holding my breath. Hehe. Just think about the lefties bursts... when the only known ones are/were owned by Paul Mccartney and John McEnroe, it kind of tells us what the price tag is on those bad boys. Hehehe. So bursts are out of the question for me. Hehe.

Nope, just a good amp. Look at the end of the video. They plugged em straight into an old vox ac10. Every sonic difference you hear is done with volume and tone controls on the guitars.
@cgavin1
@cgavin1 6 жыл бұрын
I have a modern P90 Gibson goldtop and it sounds more or less *exactly* the same through my Vox. I would argue mine actually has a nicer neck tone by virtue of being monkeyed with (A3/A4 mag combo). Most modern Gibsons with P90's sound like gash because they use short A5 mags in them and it makes the bridge super brittle and harsh, unlike these vintage pickups with their A2 or A3 mags. I'll go one further and state that, in my opinion/experience, there is sod all special about vintage guitars and pickups. They were all machine wound using cheapest/lowest bidder materials. The 'mojo' people get hung up on, in PAF's especially, is just discontinued magnet selection(s), hotter pots, offset coils and microphonics. All can be reproduced with a little effort for considerably less than the asking price of a vintage goldtop.. Not that I wouldn't buy vintage if I could afford too. :)
@auntjenifer7774
@auntjenifer7774 3 жыл бұрын
@@denniskidd but by virtue of what you said it comes down to the guitar because they plugged all the different guitars into the same amp so there for the difference comes down to which guitar he likes the sounds of.

Oscar is still one of the best sounding LPs I have ever heard. I am sure Jane is probably a little easier to play with the better frets and the neck may be more comfy, but Oscar has the tone going on IMO. When you strip Oscar down to refin, and swap out all the old electronics, etc., put those pickups in Jane....LOL! Always enjoy the show guys!

Another great show guys. I'm so lucky to live near Chicago and Chicago music exchange and have had the chance to play early les Paul's. It was amazing to see how crude some of the '52 examples were. I played one with a knot the size of my fist on the back lol. That trapeze bridge really is awful though, but I played one with a wrap over conversion (that fits into the tailpiece) and when they're properly set up they really are cool. The '58 and '59 have still evaded me, but some day I'll play them ;)

bought that book when it came out ten years ago! was 12 the first time I ever saw a band play live (in a gym to cap off the first week back to school at my Junior High), lead guitarist played a Gibson Les Paul cherry burst, first time I ever had a clear in-person look at someone playing popular rock music, didn't know how he was getting those sounds from what his hands were doing, and the sound was away from his instrument, seemed magical to me at the time, always felt Gibson Les Pauls are THE guitar, the best of the best, ever since, Fenders were always a second choice in my mind

Hey guys, I am glad to see your show again. You guys keep it honest about the tones from these guitars. I noticed that you guys want to replace the scratchy pots. There maybe another way to keep the original pots in the guitar and make it sound like new again. I had the same problem with stereo and my 1960s Teisco Del Ray ET-220 guitar. I took my guitar to the shop than they applied DEOXIT spray. No more scratchy pots. I used it on the scratchy controls on a vintage stereo and than no more scratchy sounds and sound cut offs. I tested it with my iPhone and my headphone. It sounded even better with that vintage stereo sound. Please go to the Stewart MacDonald website and look for the pot cleaning cap and the CAIG DeoxIT Pot & Switch Cleaner. I think that this would solve your scratchy pot problems on your Gibson vintage guitars and that way you could keep it original all the way down to the pots. Peace, Flood!

Great show guys. I'd love to hear a comparison between the original series and the '68 and '71 reissues. The 68 standard (56 style glldtop)with P90s is a great guitar and they also made small numbers with humbuckers. The 68 custom had a maple cap. In 71 Gibson introduced a '58' reissue. It was a stoptail '54 design so go figure. They also did a '54 custom reissue that year. All these guitar had one piece necks and bodies and apart from neck to body angle and headstock angle were pretty similar to the originals and made by mostly the same people. I've had 50s models but my current 68 is 'better' than any of them. I know it would be hard to get them all in one place (pretty sure they made fewer 68 gold tops than original bursts and only about 400 '68 customs) but it would be really interesting to hear a comparison.

A buddy of mine had a 1971 '54 RI. It was a gold top, with two P-90s and wraparound tailpiece. The guitar acoustically was extremely loud and vibrant, louder than any I'd heard. Plugged in, it was a monster with extreme volume and cut. One piece neck, no volute, and that maple colored stain. But it weighed about 11lbs!

Oscar's bridge pickup is the shizznitt! Sounds vocally more like a P-90 than a 'Bucker. But now, if Oscar went on a long business trip, I'd still sure take Jayne out! Great vids guys, ya'll are a lot of fun to "visit" with ! Btw, a friend of mine got to meet Les Paul at his Iridium gig and asked him point blank "Did you really not like the 'SG' LP's?" Hi, i am so so impressed by your knowledge about guitars and pickups .....and playing too....I have a slightly used Tokai ls 160s GOLDTOP 56 reissue...Could' you give me a "starting point " setting for both pickups , from the bottom of the strings and the polepieces of each pickup ? For bass and trebble side of each one ( strings depressed at last fret !) in ../64 inch please ? It would be so so gentle and helpful :) !!!! Best regards from France

here i am to comment multiple years later, and someone has probably already talked about this, but... on the early ones, the necks were accidentally set at too shallow of angle, and they already had tail pieces, so they just improvised and put the strings through instead of wrapping them around. hence the weird bridge.
