I read a book on country music my dad brought home around the time Doug was popping up everywhere on tv. It was filled with short stories on various artists. I can't forget the chapter on Doug. The author had him made up as one part party animal, one part Tazmanian Devil and one part crazed maniac who thought he'd live forever, even at the breakneck speed he was going through life. If any of it was true, I'm damn glad Doug made it through. What an extreme talent.

He is great. I took Basic Training with him and his brother Rusty at Ft Chaffee ARK in the summer of 1958. They entertained us several times, remember this was Basic Training and there was very little free time.

The first times I saw him was on some TV Show, not this one, he wore a blue suit frilly shirt, he was staring into the camera his black eyes burning a hole all the while he was sawing away on that fiddle that he held away from his chin, swinging his knees around, those black sideburns and I was mesmerized. WHO is THAT?

This man is in the greatest cajun fiddle player ever. I remember this show and how impressed I was with his honest talent.
