I’m a Toyota guy for life but No recovery hooks was a huge mistake by Toyota. Whoever ok’d that decision should not be working on off road trucks honestly. Recovery points are so big and important.

I believe it's available as a dealer add on option. I wonder if the dealers make a stink about not making enough money on their sales. Toyota's excuse that they left the hooks off for fuel efficiently feels fake.

As an aerospace engineer, I call bs on the recovery hooks being removed for aerodynamics. The front of a truck is a massive high pressure zone, those hooks would have an incredibly tiny impact if any at all, it doesn’t increase the cross sectional area of the truck at all. I don’t believe their reasoning.

You have to look at what gets a 10, a 5, and a 1. 1 is like a dodge neon, 5 is a standard issue car like a basic Honda, and a 10 is a Rolls Royce. Rolls Royces are pretty unquestionably the highest quality materials. Toyota isn't going to put hand stitched Italian leather made from cows that get daily massages. But it's still high quality and things aren't going to fall apart. The fact that a Toyota, a volume manufacturer gets an 8 is pretty amazing. The Doug Score isn't perfect but when you understand what he means by quality or fun it makes a little more sense.

The Tundra does have a storage area under the rear seat. The hybrid version uses that space for the battery so on those trucks, you loose that storage area. They also move the 12 volt battery to that location also for the hybrid trucks.

Couple things wrong: There IS an optional step for the tailgate that sits under the rear bumper and pops out. Believe it costs around $400 to add the "bed step" to your build. Only the hybrid models lack the storage under the rear seats, because that's where the batteries are kept. Non-hybrid versions DO have under-the-seat storage.

The Tundra finally has a rear locking differential, and coilovers now come standard instead of leaf springs for rear suspension. This improves ride quality and off-road performance, while actually improving the towing rating from the last model. It looks like Toyota did this by strengthening the frame. The interior is a huge improvement from the outgoing model, and it has a massive sunroof. Climate controls are still buttons, and it even has heated and cooled front seats. Wireless charging too. The hybrid battery is the reason the rear seat storage is gone. The digital camo black trim is supposedly a new inexpensive, easy to replace material used in damage prone areas, like fender flares and rear bumper panels by the tow hitch. Doug did not really emphasize any of this. We have asked for more power and better fuel economy for years, and it's finally here. He did not even highlight the new 10 speed transmission? Massive improvement over the outgoing 6 speed. All of this with Toyota reliability. The tundra has never been more competitive, but this review seemed negative. The only downsides I saw were the missing front recovery hook (aftermarket fix), lack of rear storage, and no generator function like the F150 powerboost. Is there room for improvement? Definitely. That being said, I think Doug really misunderstood the value proposition of the TRD Pro model. This review was not nearly as detailed as his other recent reviews, which is a shame because there was so much content left un-discussed.

His research isnt the greatest ive noticed that in alot of videos, the v8s were also the maxforce, its not like they are overselling the v6 thats just what they have always called the motor in this truck, and i get what you are saying, if he knew what he was talking about he would understand that Toyota feels like the bumber step and tailgate steps are gimmicks to compensate. The tundra has always been like this and still sold well and the biggest point is they run forever and will still hold their value, which is what has always been this trucks selling point not bumper steps…

@@handyman2183 You guys do realize that the Raptor's offroad capabilities are what cause the lower towing and payload? This Toyota is closer to a regular truck than a Raptor. Softer suspension = better offroad capabilities but at the sacrifice of towing and payload. Clearly, Ford can build a better towing truck considering they already build a truck with better towing. Ford GM and Ram are literally truck companies. The majority of their profits are from their trucks! Toyota is the leading car manufacturer globally and has the most diverse selection of cars, trucks and suv's compared to any brand. I'm really impressed by the new Tundra, I think they offer a lot of options like tailgate step up and backseat storage under the seats that you said they didn't. Though the 360 camera makes no sense hahaha. I come from a family of successful electrical and mechanical engineers and the reason most of us drive Toyota's and Honda's are because of how reliable they are. My only gripe with the old tundra was the bad fuel economy and lack of basic entertainment features and so I think they absolutely hit it out of the park with this new design. Again Toyota doesn't make the percentage of profit from trucks like all the American brands do, so I think this is exactly what most reliability-minded, Toyota enthusiasts were looking for. I'm definitely getting one!
