This one hit home with me. I was privileged to build display models for Northrop when i first hired on . The shop did RCS and display models. I personally did a YB-49 ,YF-17,F-20, countless B-2's and a few others . A very unique process for building some from wood ,other fiberglass molds were made . Then laid up with fiberglass and a thick resin filler. It was a fun time. From there to Edwards on the flight test team for B-2. Northrop had a awesome graphic arts team so i have some really nice pics of some of the unclassified models. My favorite model you showed us was the skyshark, loved the props and details. Thanks for this vid great history as always.

USN have had some beautiful pieces of machinery.... Like my dad, I just LOVE the Spad, the Able Dog, the flying dump truck, Sandy or whatever she was called.... We had a few in Sweden used as target tugs, all painted yellow.... Man, if I ever get the money and the appropriate license, a couple Skyraiders will be bought....A-1H and A-1E! The funny thing is, I used to think that the AD-5 was butt ugly, nowadays I love it as much as the single seaters, more so if they carry USS YORKTOWN or USS CORAL SEA....😍🥰😎 Greetings from a Swede in Glasgow, Scotland!

What a terrific episode, Mike ! Thanks for airing it. If anybody would like to see a A2D Skyshark, one is on display at the San Diego Aerospace Museum Annex at Gillespie Field, in El Cajon, CA. Sadly, it is displayed outdoors, and has suffered the effects of weather, sun, birds and moisture.

I had the privilege to fly in an AD-5 Skyraider(EA-1E) twice. What a ride doing mock bomb runs while sitting behind that huge 3350 engine! It actually lookes really small hanging on the front of that aircraft.

This episode really made me think: What happened to the aerospace industry in the South Bay area of LA? When I was a kid The LA area seemed it was the center of the universe for the design, R&D and manufacture of aircraft and many other aerospace products. I hope SpaceX doesn't leave anytime soon. Thanks again to Mike Machat for another great watch.....

McDonell bought Douglas, Rockwell bought North American, Lockheed shut down their Burbank plant in the 90's, and consolidated all of their large aircraft manufacturing at their Georgia plant, and bought the Fort Worth Division of General Dynamics, around that time as that Company was getting out of the Aerospace Industry. Then, as the 90's were coming to an end, Boeing bought out Rockwell International, and McDonell-Douglas, also in the 90's, Northrop merged with Grumman Aerospace, to create Northrop Grumman.

Thank you for that very interesting look at display models. As a New Zealander, the best part for me was the artwork at 7:44 showing a Skyhawk in New Zealand markings, clearly part of the Douglas efforts to sell the aircraft to New Zealand (ten of the A-4K, and four TA-4K were delivered in 1970). The aircraft has the old silver fern leaf roundels, fin flashes with blue leading (it should be red), a silver finish (NZ aircraft had a USAF Vietnam style colour scheme), Bullpup missiles which were not carried by NZ aircraft, and lacks the dorsal avionics hump of the A-4K. I am very tempted to build a model of that aircraft.

Thanks Mike. Really enjoy your vids. Wanted to share some history. I've been a professional model/prototype builder about fifty years. Part of my product development and R&D career. Also a pilot and avid RC aircraft enthusiast. I grew up between my parents and aunt and uncle. My uncle was head of flight test at Fallon. And from 1955 to 65, I guess I sat in every non classified aircraft the navy flew or tested. Hours of my uncle teaching me the cockpit layouts and controls, performance data, etc. He was extremely proud of naval aviation, and was instrumental in my appointment to Annapolis. Full disclosure, I decided on Army aviation. Much to the consternation of everyone with half a brain. Thanks so much for a very interesting vid.

Great video and I always enjoy hearing your detailed knowledge and aircraft expertise of these beautiful machines. I grew up not far from Westover Field and think I looked at every plane that flew overhead, lol. Swarms of B-52s during Vietnam were very noisy at night. We lived West of the base and near a mountain and when they were taking off, under the cloud cover the noise seemed to explode as they passed over the mountain. Great memories. Thank you, take care and peace out.

Another great video Mike! I love these deep dives on the aircraft made from a single company. The A-4 is such a gorgeous plane. We have one at the aviation museum I work at (Kalamazoo Airzoo) next to our other modern Navy/Marine aircraft and you can see just how compact it is when it's next to a F-14. Heck, it's about the same size as the Huey Cobra Gunship we have next to it and even our F-18 and F-8 look large next to it. The A-4 we have takes up about the same amount of floor space as our WW2 Grumman Cats, we makes sense given the Essex detail Mike mentioned (we have a Wildcat, Hellcat currently and used to have a Bearcat and Tigercat that I miss dearly, and yes I know the Bearcat and Tigercat weren't in WW2). The A-4 is a truly remarkable plane and an amazing and versatile design. It's not the flashiest but it is one of the best.

Hey Mike, the Banshee, was used in the Korean War, and it wasn't a Post Korean War design, because the first prototype flew in 1947, and then four years after its first flight, it made its debut in the Korean War, as the F2H-2 version.

John, Check your Douglas history - all late-model A-4 Skyhawks were indeed built in Building 14 at Long Beach, with the very last airframe, an A-4M ship #2960, delivered to the US Marine Corps on February 27, 1979. I was there.
