I’ll keep going for a bit longer.
Update covering the last few weeks with the sheep and lambs. I haven’t felt like making videos recently - finding it a difficult year in general. my mental health isn’t great I struggle with depression and the last few months my emotional health has been deteriorating. My personality type is I worry a lot, I am emotional and sometimes sensitive - I question if I’m tough enough to farm and if my skin is thick enough to share online when the comments can be brutal. My anxiety and depression have both been worse the last few months and it’s not helped having a tough lambing and the aftermath. Very tired and depleted. But I genuinely appreciate the lovely community of interested and kind supporters so thank you from the bottom of my heart.

fair play to you for dagging all those ewes ............a lot of work of sheep , esp with a missive crop of lambs that you have ........next year you might consider selling some of the ewes that are scanned with 3 shortly after scanning ......all those triplets are more work than they are worth in my humble opinion ................this last year has tested both man and beast .......... ..... keep on going ,you are doing a very good job with your farm ........every body I know that are farming have said to me how hard the last year has been on them with the weather not playing ball as well as everything else ........ so you are not alone in feeling down sometimes ......and yes you are plenty tough to farm ...! running a camp site and a farm together is not easy ,not many would be up to the task .......!

Joanna, truly, you are doing a top job with your livestock care and management. As you said there is the odd one with a limp or a dirty behind etc but IMHO with the steps you are taking you will certainly soon have those problems well and truly under control. Overall (and I mean this) the flock look so very good and are a credit to you, never doubt that. The financial outlays sure are a never-ending constant in farming eh. In my 48 years in the game with the usual crap prices offered for livestock and produce you often feel like you're just turning money over, year in and year out, with precious little at the end of the day for yourself. As always Joanna I read the description and honestly, how you are feeling exactly mirrors how I've been all my farming life. Like you I know all too well, the anxiety, apprehension and melancholy that running a farm can bring on. Also at times I've had to contend with downright nasty unwanted advice and comments from certain pig ignorant, insufferable PITA people who don't even run a farming operation, although not on the scale you've had to deal with. Sadly there is no magic bullet fix for the above mentioned dilemmas. I know it's different for everyone but FWIW the things that have helped me deal with many bad times and bad days are at the end of the day thinking about happy memories of the past (Dad) and the true positives in my life like the love and unwavering support of Lea-ann my "significant other" of more than 33 years also my 2 now adult children. I'm also blessed to have some close and trusted friends. I often think of them all at the end of the bad days and it does help me to cope. I know it's not the same for everyone but that's what's helped me for my 63 years on the planet. Top footage Joanna. You are dealing with every challenge at Dale Farm as capably as anyone anywhere could. Take care.

Hi Jeff , as always thank you for sharing with me and your supportive words and understanding!! I think lately I became so exhausted it affected my mind a lot. I am starting to recover now, and I do feel better / different to when I was deep in the hole of it all , if that makes sense. I think the world is a scary place too and when you are awake your eyes are open and you see what is going on! A war on farmers in my eyes! And so it’s only going to get harder!! But I always take it back to one day at a time when I’m feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the situation , and focus on what I can control. Lately I have been able to appreciate the small daily blessings around on the farm x

I care for your Mental Health Joanna & I missed the Dale Farm Catch-ups & I suffer from Complex-PTSD in a very profound way & M.E so I live in very dark places. Farming is very complex & draining and I feel you are very articulate & winning in your positive & meticulous method of farming. It's nice when I remembered the Vaccines & the Foot Bathing from the last Lambing Season & 34KG Whoppers the Lambs look very healthy. Looking after the Ewes Tails & Yes going to lend you soothing Ambient Shoegazing Folk Music all that noise from the Ewes & Lambs. Good that you know that fields were on Lead Mines hence explaining avoiding those fields Keep Going Joanna I'm on your side & Nick xx

It’s been a very tough year for you two, loving Nicks innovation on the footpath, maybe needs to take out a patent lol. The noise of the lambs and ewes is pretty deafening. In the shooting world you can get electronic ear defenders that you can adjust the sensitivity to take out the crack of firearms going off but can still pick up normal conversations and price wise they are not too crazy if they could be adjusted to the required level. Also as a polite suggestion you could consider renting out parts of the farm as a film location as it is so varied and picturesque. It would be great as a period drama. Nick would make a great Darcy lol.
@DaleFarm
@DaleFarm Ай бұрын
That’s interesting about the ear defenders’ the lambs sure are a noisy bunch and when people have heard them they say how awful it must be to try and work with that amount of noise , I accept it’s part of the job but I do find it wears me down’ who would think a sound could have so much impact !

No need to feel disheartened at all, your doing extremely well with the lambs, it can be like that, one day your pleased with them next day not, well that’s what I’m like anyway. Lambs seem to be lacking little bit of milk as are my own which is very frustrating albeit that last batch in the video had much fuller bums, great feeling seeing them like that!. Curious as to how your bought in replacements faired against your own ewes, better lambs etc? All young lambs need a dose at usual intervals regardless what they preach these days, I was doing samples and (yeah they need a dose) was the reply every time so would save on the samples until it’s evident that there could be an issue like you just had, it won’t take a genius to spot it. I was on a strategy of not dosing if no dirty bums, big mistake and cost me a nice crop of lambs. Dose now at 7 or 8 weeks and then 6 weeks as they are grazing well by then. I do a sample after that if I’m not content with them. If you don’t mind me saying I think dad would be pretty chuffed with his girl.
@DaleFarm
@DaleFarm Ай бұрын
Thank you, yes I definitely think samplings is useful to do. And in this case To check if the wormer worked or if it was the right action. The lambs in the triplets are all going to be getting less milk but Iv tried to make up for it by feeding the ewes and giving lambs some creep. The twins are looking a lot better, there were so many 3s this time a bit of a nightmare for workload

Great job - the right time to wean lambs is at 12 to 14 weeks A ewe peak production of milk is at 3 - 6 weeks after lambing. The only reason you would wean early is no grass or lambs not thriving ie. "Bad management" Considering the weather we've had the sheep and lambs are looking very good .
