I was 17 when my Mom had her last baby at age 44. Our precious little jewel was born with Down’s syndrome. She spent her first 42 days in neo-natal unit. Then we brought her home. I can’t tell you what a joy she was to us and to everyone around her. Our Mom died when our little girl was 20 years old. My siblings and I stepped in to help our Dad care for her. But let me tell you, she was one independent young lady. She had a lot of the side effects associated with Down’s syndrome. Heart, lungs, eyes, thyroid and other issues. She graduated from high school when she was 21. At age 54, we lost her to Covid even though we had tried protecting her from the public. I can’t imagine what my life would have been like without her. Our own children loved her just as we had loved her. Even though we grieve every day for her, I know she’s with her Mommy and Daddy in heaven. I have a picture of our Cammy when she was Winnie’s age. They look so so much alike. Much love and prayers to your family and little Winnie as she grows. You will be amazed at her progress and her love for life and every one around her.

Love you all so so much, really happy to know that you people had really a good time with her. Trust me these things really give me so much courage that one day my daughter MIZLA WILL BE AS INDEPENDENT LIKE ALL NORMAL PEOPLE, Because she is also diagnosed with DS. Please pray for her. ❤

@@asmarasaif4020 I think of your Mizla often since your post. Her name is beautiful just like I know she is also beautiful. Was wondering how old she is. I would never trade any of her accomplishments and good days with our baby Cammy. She was our angel and the love of our lives. I know you will have many wonderful times with your daughter.

EXCELENTE COMENTARIO. EN POCAS PALABRAS, HAS DESCRITO UNAS SITUACIONES DE MÁS DE CINCUENTA AÑOS. CONOZCO A UNA FAMILIA Q TUVO UNA HIJA IGUAL. MURIÓ LA MADRE, EL PADRE, LA HERMANA MAYOR, ELLA Y HA DEJADO UNA SOBRINA A LA QUE HA CAMBIADO LA VIDA Y SUS ESTUDIOS. CREO QUE NO HAY DERECHO QUE UNA ENFERMEDAD DE UNA PERSONA CAMBIE, DISTORSIONE LA VIDA DE UNA SOBRINA.

My son Paul has Down syndrome, he will be 48 this weekend. He lives independently, is very literate and has researched our family history, travels to London and back by train and taxis for meetings at Mencap, and has just secured a part in a play the the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. Paul works part time in a charity shop. When he was born we were told he would be a 'cabbage', nothing could be further from the truth. He used to be very fit, swam in special Olympics for UK and took part in gymnastics when he was young, He has an amazing memory for dates, names and facts about football. Unfortunately Paul does have health problems associated with the syndrome but he doesn't let any of them get in the way of his very full life. Your daughter is beautiful and I am sure with your determination she will have a wonderful life. Thank you so much for making these videos.

We, as a family and siblings, to our beloved Cammy are grieving her loss after 18 months. She passed at age 54. She was loved by so many people. Her church family, her neighbors,her nieces and nephews, her teachers and her doctors. And her Mommy and Daddy, sisters and brothers. We lost our Mother when Cammy was 20. Our Father was with us til 2017. She was a joy to us in life and had a brilliant sense of humor. She loved music especially country and gospel. My Dad was so good with her and so proud of her. She loved going to the beach with her “sissies”, going to concerts, and out to eat her favorite food, flounder. I love telling everyone about what joy she brought to our lives. She loved Jesus and I know one day soon I will see her again. Looking forward to that day.

I have never experienced giving birth to a Down Syndrome baby, but I have taught some, as a teacher. They are usually delightful and can teach other children a lot. How? About accepting someone just as they are, how to live in the moment and how to find joy in the little things. I also learned a lot! Winnie is gorgeous and it's a good job you don't live near me, in England, as I would always be on your doorstep, ready for play with Winnie and her sisters. ❤❤❤

Great video - knowledge is power. I randomly ended up having a nice chat and a couple of jokes with a guy with Down's in a supermarket today. He was 50 and I'm older. He looked as healthy as me. Sadly, we were both in a hurry, or we would have gone for a coffee, as we we really clicked. We didn't talk about Down's or my health issues, (Why would we?) but we did talk about what we like to eat and a bit of current affairs. Nice guy.

I recently became reacquainted with a former student w/DS. I knew her when she was 6-9 and now she’s 27. She was born with a heart defect that was corrected with surgery before one year, then she had leukemia as a toddler. She also came from a non English speaking home, so she struggled with language. She was way behind in expressive language, and it was hard to know exactly what she understood. Now, she speaks in sentences that are mostly clear to me as an unfamiliar listener. Progress can be slow, but progress is made. 😊

Yes I had to stop googling everything with the diagnosis. I am 34 weeks pregnant with twin girls,one of whom has been diagnosed with DS. We just all want our kids to be healthy. And I have realized I have to take what may comes one day at a time. I havent even told my family. I wanted as stress free of a pregnancy as possible without potential judgement from family/friends. May I ask have you started early intervention for her already? Ty!!

Congrats on your pregnancy!! So sorry you haven't been able to tell friends and family, finding a group of supportive people since my daughters birth has been completely game changing. I hope you are able to find a supportive community❤️ Yes, we started early intervention when she was 4 months old, I started the process when she was 2 months old but it took 2 full months from first phone call to first evaluation to being assigned a therapist to actual first therapy appointment, it has been so helpful for us I really enjoy it and recommend it!

Absolutely! Start EI asap! If your babies are preemies, the referral to EI can made before they leave the hospital. Depending on how EI is run in your community, it can take some time to get fully on board, and the number of appointments and visits can be a bit overwhelming. They should inform you about other resources in your community, including case management for babies with health/medical needs, local DS association, as well as info about related services, Medicaid, and SSI. There’s no cost to EI, but you may also choose to get private therapies as your babies grow.

@@Flipper86 hi there. I'm in New jersey. Yeah unfortunately they really haven't said that yet to me about all that stuff. I feel like I've had to look into it and inquire myself. But yes I am slowly but surely building a small community of various people. Thanks for all that info.

@@lovebug8482 I’ve been a respite provider for over 20 years. The range of knowledge and resources shared can vary widely depending on the program and staff. Do you know what organization does EI in your community? School system or non profit? I’d also consider contacting your state department of health and human services about possible services and benefits. Start with the Down Syndrome Association and/or local disabilities advocacy group.

hello, not so much medical issue, than just a common thing showing with down syndrome - the tongue out. i don't know if this is a german thing, but my God child got a little plastic thing to put into the mouth. that was used twice a day for 10minutes. only works as long as there are no teeth. he got an imprint made of his upper jaw including the palate. short before the end of the plastic thing they formed a little rounded cone. what happened then was, he started to try and touch the "cone" with the tip of his tongue, just like lots of people do with a cavity or a new tooth filling. this led to general better control of the tongue and the ability to keep the tongue in his mouth most of the time during the day. exceptions are - up until today, and he's 25y now - when he gets real tired or is in full concentration. if I remember correctly the docter back then said, besides the fact that the tongue is simply not showing it was also health benefits that came with it. i just don't remember them. maybe it was something with the teeth, or maybe correct breathing.
@Flipper86

I’ve not heard of this treatment. Tongue sticking out is fairly common for folks with DS. Low muscle tone and smaller jaw make it harder for these folks to keeps their tongue in their mouth. Add in nasal congestion/trouble breathing that leads to mouth breathing create a habit. Yes, it’s better to keep the tongue in: fewer germs coming in the body, less drooling, less chapped skin, etc.
