"Down the Old Potomac" On the C&O Canal; A Thomas Edison Film (1917), is a silent, black & white film, depicting the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, back in the days (1831-1924) when it was operational, with water, locks, gates, towpath, and boats. The C&O Canal was used to transport goods from Cumberland, Maryland to Washington DC, but was ruined by flooding and abandoned. Today the C&O Canal towpath has been repurposed as a popular 184-mile-long bike trail.

This is a super cool video! I love the C&O canal it is one of my favorite places and I was just there yesterday going into some caves and I always imagine the horses or mules pulling barges along the towpath. I just moved to West Virginia from Maryland where I lived for over 38 years and this place is just in my blood, so I'm seeing a different part of the canal that runs through Western Maryland and the canal is only about 6 MI from here where I live now, there's some amazing things and it's too bad that so much of the canal is overgrown in many places. That was so cool to see the pawpaw tunnel! Thank you for posting this I can't believe this has been 3 years on here and I've never seen it. One of the best videos on KZfaq!

We lived right on the canal at Big Pool for a short while. My mother actually met and spoke with Justice Douglas on his memorable trip.

I shared this with my cycling group. We point these historical scenes out on our towpath rides. An enjoyable experience to know what was.

Paw Paw Tunnel on the C&O Canal is a great place to take your kids for a fascinating and safe walk on the historic towpath, through a mountain, in a mile-long tunnel.

The film shows the working canal with horses pulling the boat while the train roars past. Unbelievable footage. Thanks for making this available.

C&O Canal Great Falls Canal Boat Rides. A short segment of the canal has been restored and dewatered by the National Park Service, and is open to the public for mule-drawn canal barge rides. Purchase tickets and board the boat at the Great Falls Tavern Visitor Center at 11710 MacArthur Blvd., Potomac, MD 20854.

You can't draw blood from a stone; it was shot at 24 frames per second. But if you can find an original print, not one dup'd onto 16mm, and clean it up digitally, it could look really good. Even so, full HD 1920x1080 would be dandy, a 4K scan would look no better because the equivalent resolution of 4K isn't there.

@@paulh6591 This is true. I was thinking artificial upscaling/smoothing of available source material using AI tools. Example: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nsBhgsqCsZ_Dc6s.html

I didn't know for sure, but will try to see if I can figure it out eventually. Based on timing alone, it's between Cumberland and The Paw Paw tunnel, likely Old Town, possibly Short Gap.
