The Story Of The Engineering Marvel That Took Far Longer Than Planned To Construct. The Paw Paw Tunnel was to be a shortcut around the formidable bends in the Potomac River, it was intended to save costs and manpower...instead, its monumental construction stretched the resources of the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Company to their near breaking point. The tunnel is still in use today, for passage by bikers and hikers using the towpath to travel between Washington DC & Cumberland, MD.
EDIT: Doing My Research I Found A Number Of 200,000 Cubic Yards Of Shale Removed...But Upon Further Examination I Cannot Find The Article That Stated That Number. Instead, The Amount Of Shale Removed Is Reported At 82,000 Cubic Yards. Big Whoops On My Part
