It was so much fun to meet Brian from Colorado Backcountry Adventures, hear his stories from the road, and check out his sweet 4x4 Tacoma that he has spent the last 3 years and 7 months living in full time. Brian's setup shows that sometimes a minimalistic approach can work better and allow you to experience more. Drop a comment if you have any questions about the rig or Brians lifestyle.

I understand exactly what you mean. I was in the corporate world too, I was a salesman, making more money than a doctor with only a high school diploma. I dropped out of college to pursue my sales position full time, because the money was insane. I was in business to business sales and got a hefty percentage from contracts on rentals as well. I quit my position 2 years ago and I'll never go back. The money isn't worth the slavery. I was a very angry person, because I was very stressed and running on fumes. Now I'm stress free and very happy and never angry. I love my freedom more than I love money.

Thanks Ineke! Yeah, Sierra is such a great travel companion so I wanted her to have a big enough area to stretch out and nap for long stretches of driving. She is so funny....she'll wake up from a nap and surprise attack me by licking my face for about 2 seconds and then she'll immediately lay back down and go to sleep. I love having her with me 24/7, we have so much fun living this way. Cheers to the good life and adventures with dogs!

Like whatever he was named, the guy found in Italian glacier: the guy had the best and the top gears of his time(6-7,000years ago?) and he lived and died. I don’t know, I have too much and too much of them aren’t needed. I wanna go see places and meet good people, eat what I catch and buy less. I wanna go places with a machine(truck) that I know how to work to some extent, take care of it and count on it.

the problem is, if someone does not have a study job and does not pay taxes into social security, it could become the tragedy of their lives soon or later...Only someone who can work on the road or had won the lottery can do this. Paying into the system is a better option..if someone take care of their health, they can retired with a max out of $ 2800 s about, and live on the road if that is what they desire...another problem is, if someone does need medical emergency and is alone traveling could end up in a bad situation,,,,reality check...however, it is a good idea to own a utility vehicle for working people just in case someone loose their apartments, for example, someone has a job and makes 2000 per months, in some cities it is not enough money to afford the rent and live on it, there for, that person need to be stealth and live in a vehicle and get a planet fitness membership for showering needs...

@@Down2Mob The Cordura extension works great but I like your hard design better. It offers a higher level of security. I 'lived' in a Toyota Tacoma for one year. But I did the opposite of you. My living space was the cab. The low profile camper held all the stuff. I removed the passenger and back seats and back cushions. I partially leveled the passenger side floor with 2x4s and 2x6s. No leveling was done under the dashboard part. Ensolite pad under 4 inches of foam completed the basic bed. Enough padding made the metal part of the back seat a non-issue. It sounds too narrow, but in reality it was not. Fully stretched out, my feet and head hit something, but the reality of comfy enough sleeping never warranted full body extension. I had no extra heater, so on the few very cold nights I idled the engine and ran the heater for under an hour and slept fine. The drivers side back window was always covered. Windshield covered with sunshader. For privacy, passenger windows just had a bath towel strung. Back passenger area contained only the day's/eve's food clothes or whatever. Life was wonderful.

Dang, I really wish you would of did a build video of the slide out. I have a silverado with the 5.8’ bed and have thought about a 6.5’ shell and leave the tailgate open and build slopes sides and bottom to connect the camper shell to the bed and have it water tight. The slide out could be pushed back in and would look better when just driving around than a longer shell on a short bed though..

Phil!!! Saw you on the Colorado Backcountry Adventure channel!! Great tour of your rig!! This Toyota is awesome too!! Love to see how everyone designs their rigs!! I do have a question about your stove/oven combo; I want to get one but the reviews are up and down; the oven does not keep a constant temperature and goes straight to Hell hot. The stove lighting is difficult. If you run out of something to VLOG about please do the stove/oven in the future!!! Thanks Dude, great channel!!!

Awesome darryl, glad to hear you caught the walk thru on Brian's channel! It was so much fun to collaborate with him. You know... the camo chef oven has been hit or miss. The burners always work well, but the oven sometimes has a hard time getting up to temperature. It has a lot of vents, so if there is any wind it has a hard time heating. A buddy of mine has one and says he wraps a towel around it to keep the air out and that works well. I have to mess with it some more but I'll definitely do a review of it in the future my man!!

Hey man, great video. Looks alot like Sedona after the snow storm which is where we are now. Don't pay any attention to the folks who are negative. It is a special breed that understands exactly what you are trying to get out of life. To them it looks like homeless but who gives a shit what they think. They will never understand and they don't need to. We are out and about like you and it has been an amazing life. We have experienced more stunning raw beauty in nature in the last week than what the negative Nancy's get to see in a year or more...if ever. No need to justify yourself. You and I and a handful of other lucky souls have got it figured out. I left the sheeple behind and they can gnash their teeth and belittle but, deep down inside, they secretly wish they were you.

Cool vid and I get what roach said and why you guys do this kind of lifestyle. The thing that I would worry about constantly would be how to “retire” eventually when your to old to live on the road or when medical problems start happening in your life. In your case I’m guessing you must have made investments that you live with and can use someday when your old.
@whoistheroach136
@whoistheroach136 5 жыл бұрын
UserDeniedAccess I want to answer your question because it would be irresponsible of me to promote this way of living and not do it. I had a great career and I was able to retire early. No trust fund or jackpot investments. Just hard work so it wasn't given to me. I have no idea how someone could live an ultra mobile life without an internet enabled job, workamping (which prohibits alot of ultra mobility), investor/trader. The only thing I can think of other than things like these is financial assistance (aka trust fund, parents giving money, etc). It costs money to do this but not necessarily alot of money. But it does cost money and it has to come from somewhere. Some KZfaqrs sell products or have sponsors. Some get money from KZfaq views I guess. Maybe they saved up for a while and are living off that but the money will run out eventually. I have not checked into what these folks do as my wife and I stay much to ourselves because we are in the backcountry often where no other folks are. Today, in Sedona we did typical off trail hiking which afforded us spectacular beauty without another soul in sight. We call it our own "private Sedona". We say the same for so many of the places we visit. We are masters at getting off the beaten path (with great physical effort) and seeing/experiencing things that other folks don't even know exist. I do have a house or two waiting for me and some property elsewhere when it is the right time to take a break. As far as health issues, I will cross that bridge when I come to it. I retired early solely for the reason to live life as much as I can and not make as much money as I can. Climb those mountains while you still can!

I guess i would just worry too much. Even having a good health care plan has kept me in jobs i hate, but my family needs it. So when the kids are out, I'm out!! Haha and if Bernie gets elected we will all have health coverage anyways!! I doubt we will have any actual health care, but we will have insurance... lol. Heck if ocasio gets elected someday we will get paid for doing nothing, until all the rich people's money runs out...

Sounds like a tune-up is on the menu... new plugs, at least. One question I didn't see answered in this excellent tour of Brian's rig, was the toilet solutions. Does he have a 5-gallon bucket with a snap-on toilet seat? Walk off into the brush, dig a hole, "go," then bury it? Does he do like truckers, and keep a pee container on board? (I've heard of truckers using an empty plastic gallon milk container.)

I've thought of converting a e-150 because of the price of rent. Fort collins rent is kind of ridiculous and colorado's not getting any cheaper because of all the yuppies moving from the coasts. Van living doesn't sound too bad honestly.

I hear ya, that was my motivation for getting on the road. I rented a bungalow in the RiNo Art District in Downtown Denver for years and it cost me roughly $2300 per month with utilities. I can now travel full-time on as little as $1200 per month and still have health/car insurance covered. I'm planning to go check out Idaho this summer since it's essentially the same terrain as Colorado with a fraction of the people. Fort Collins is such a great town, I used to go camp the Poudre all the time, but the recent explosion in new real estate developments up there (and everywhere on the Front Range) is driving up the cost of living at an insane rate. I'd rather live minimally and travel to cool places as opposed to working 50-60 hours per week to keep up with rising living expenses in the city. I hope you are able to plan your escape soon, I have quite a few friends who live this way in vans, RVs, campers, trucks and they are the most positive people I've met. It's refreshing to see others enjoying life while living minimally!

Yamika is a great company. Check,out their He-Brew coffee. Very kosher. 😂🤣. That’s a sweet setup. Like most, I’ve been lurking, video to video, looking for ideas. My Suburban is pretty much good, but kinda the opposite of how you went. I use a cot tent to sleep in. I just had a problem, comfort/positionally wise, sleeping in the back. I do need to put some solar up top and add a solar gen and fridge. Im getting ready to downsize and move into my travel trailer. I use the Burb for weekend trips and scouting for deer season. It’s very able to go weeks, if needs be, as long as I have access to fuel and water. Just bought a box camper for my Ford. That’ll be more of a long range, longer term traveler. Just getting ready to cut into that. Has a few leaks, so some framing repair/upgrade, foam insulation, solar (the generator and fridge will share with the Burb) and I’m trying to build a smaller, portable, DC powered gold dredge. Wanting to put a spare fuel tank (40gal) on top of the fuel tanks it already has. Anyway. That’s a sweet setup. Been kinda watching the evolution of the extension. Thought about it for the Burb, but I love the cot tent. At least for now. Happy travels.
