The soldier wasn't suffering from PTSD; he had malaria. Ironically, it was *Patton himself* who was suffering combat fatigue at the time, coupled with a lack of sleep, and since he was in denial about it, he projected it onto someone else who just happened to seem uninjured compared to the other soldiers in the field hospital. After his head cleared and he was made aware of the soldier's actual situation, Patton summoned the private to his office and sincerely apologized for slapping him: "I didn't know you were sick."

The concept on paper, too, has a critical flaw: Communism requires a benevolent leader that can catch the balance between total state control of the economy and still allow to prevent authoritarian dictatorial governments. The problem here is that no such person existed, exists, or ever will exist because this is human nature to be greedy, exploitative, dominant and authoritarian.

He was already deranged by that time. But, he wanted Germany to keep fighting for many reasons. He was actually doing well with his plans at least till 42. He didn't want Moscow campaign and it backfired and pretty much cost them the Eastern Front.

@@Ghreinos Took them 5 years to bomb Germany when Germany was already on its deathbed and defeated. Arthur Harris was seriously overrated and funny that he was abandoned by his own people after the war. Göring bombed Britain when Britain was powerful enough to defend its turf. Britain and France could've stopped the war in 38, 39 or even in 40 had they tried. Or even in 41 when Germany was busy with Barbarossa. Sending 1000 planes would've done the job in 41, but, hey! You guys were playing rock paper scissor and started your campaign in Africa. Lol! Italy? Really?

Canada has a joking reputation of being overly polite but in both World Wars they were the equivalent of Mike Tyson on PCP with how absolutely hard went. Some of the absolutely best soldiers in history.

Canadians were known for going into war when needed with absolute savagery. In WW1 they were know for storming enemy trenches and killing every soldier no matter if they ended up surrendering . There was a case where Canadian battalions said ‘ eff that’ to the Christmas Day cease fire and stormed trenches and killed all the enemy.

I am blown away by the artistry and devotion that must have been placed on this animation!! Wow!! Finally a way to show my kids an accurate historical telling of WW2 in Europe. And being that its animated my kids are really into it and citing many details.

I really appreciate the references to the Ghost Army at 9:20. I recently started reading a book about them and doing more research into them and it's caused me to have this great appreciation for how large of a role they really played. I mean they not only orchestrated this huge ruse on the landings but more that almost 20 times did they also fool front line troops into believing that entire tank divisions were in one place while they were actually on the move. They used the inflatable tanks for this, gargantuan Navy ship speakers to play the sound of tanks revving. They made fake inflatable artillery guns with special effects to make them sound like real artillery guns with flash and all. Genuinely they were genius all of them.

I learned about the Pointe-du-Hoc "debacle" from playing video games. IIRC, it was a mission in one of the earlier Medal of Honor games and I remember being pissed as a kid going through that mission for basically no reason, so imagine how those rangers felt losing half their fellow soldiers for a target that had already been "neutralized".

The guns were still there and operational just moved back a little from their firing positions. The rangers took out five of them. Vets are furious about the above myth pushed by films and games.

ep - heard of it and even walked the battlefield. It is part of the National Park System and can be visited via Pecos National Monument. Awesome area of New Mexico. it was the battle that stopped the Confederate advance towards Fort Union and a possible invasion of Colorado.

Amazing work as always. You could easily narrate for the BBC. 11:37 is the scene from the end of the D Day landings in Saving Private Ryan. The soldier in the middle right is sprawled face down dead near the tank trap in the same way one of Ryan's brothers was.

A good short documentary could be the often overlooked Norwegian Campaign or the Arctic Convoys. These documentaries could be really good like these. I hope you consider this as an option. Overall very well made video. Keep up the good work. 👍

Bagration is the d-day of the east. As France was in the west, Belarus is in the east. However, given the scope of this video. I could say he could start everything that happened from June 1944-April 1945 of the east.

You should do a more in depth video about the Falaise Gap massacre. My grandpa, part of the 90th ID, passed through there after the fighting had subsided. He shared a lot of his experiences during the war with me but he would never talk about the gap. I just know that it impacted him more than any other event he witnessed during WW2.

This is one of the few "animated/cartoon" history channels I watch because, whereas others omit important details in an effort to be concise and visually appealing, this channel lets us have our cake and eat it too. We get maps, timelines, battle plans, division names and types, all displayed in a seamless and immersive manner, an example being at 13:47. Another thing I like is the semi-realistic illustration style, so that I don't have to guess which historical figure is being portrayed based on a stick figure wearing a generic uniform. Cool stuff.

my great grandpa, Staff Sergeant Julius Wetter survived Omaha Beach and the rest of the war in Europe and lived until 2004. he saved many lives after yelling for everyone to take off their packs.

That the fact that German defences at Normandy is weak compared to other parts of Hiter’s Atlantic wall shows how much more destruction D-Day would have been if the Allies landed elsewhere

Stalin begged Roosevelt and Churchill to open up a 2nd front to take the pressure off of him. This is why the Italian mainland landings took place... and later, the French coast. Many badly needed German divisions had to be pulled from the Eastern Front because of this. Stalin got his wish.

Jerry There was already a, second front though in reality, keeping many resources away from thr Eastern Front. The war in North Africa/Med the Atlantic and the bombing of Germany. If not for that, the USSR would likely have lost. These tied down significant German resources, even before Italy and Normandy. 2/3 of German wartime expense and material resources went on the Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine and these were mostly destroyed in the west. Already by the end of 1942 only 24% of German fighters were on the Eastern Front. That dropped to 17% by the end of 1943. The air war over Germany alone kept 1/3 of all German artillery inside Germany.

Among the Canadian there was a figure familiar to sci-fi fans. James Doohan, better known as "Scotty" of Star Trek. He lost fingers from one hand, to German bullets, on D-day

I repeat what I said over a year ago. As a reader of WW2 for over 50 years , I find this series of Armchair Historian videos Excellent. Concise and precise wording. Very appropriate and comprehensive analysis and graphics. 100% worthy. Not one single solitary wasted part. No rambling nor digressions that take interest away. I also repeat that something done on this level could very well be used as a Learning Tool/Aid for teaching our students History. Kudos......keep up the GREAT work. If you wish to Add to your videos to show battles ? Perhaps the Slow walk up the New Guinea coast and the Solomon Chain. The air and sea battles included. The Reduction of Rabaul. The terribly slow campaign up Italy. Chindits and Marauders in China. Battle of the Atlantic. If you have already done some of these , then I must watch them. Again....GREAT work. Keep it up.

May I make a slight criticism? I believe that the 'floating' tanks were released too far from the beaches in the American sector and that they performed quite well for the British, also that the use of specialised armour (to help clear mines for instance) was spurned by US forces to their detriment?

Kind of. Most were set off late except for the 741st battalion. After reading an article in Wikipedia. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/DD_tank#:~:text=Also%2C%20the%20tanks%20of%20741st,mi%20(4.8%20km)%20offshore. It says that the dd tanks were took out by cannons, but mostly the 6 ft. High waves, which were 5 feet higher than they were designed for. Yes, tanks of the 741st battalion were set about a mile farther than they were made to. This led american crew members to radio back to drop them closer, which led to the destruction of the rest of the tanks under german cannon fire. The only tanks that made it were those that had sailers as skippers. Also American troops had been counting on bulldozer Sherman's to clear obstacles, however much of them were destroyed. Sword beach had had calm seas, while Juno beach could only launch one battalion, leading to heavy casualties Utah beach lost I think 2 dd tanks, while gold beach had taken lots of tank casualties, but displayed the power of sherman crab tanks As for Americans ignoring them, I have heard both ways, one that their thinking was too constrained and that Americans always think they know best, and the other is that while Bradley did order much of them, Eisenhower did not have time/ resources to get them and train american troops to use them and them learn how to apply them.

Rob, Similarly, the American built Mulberry Harbour (Jerry built) was completely destroyed by channel storms whereas the British built harbour although severly damaged was reparable. It seems the Americans always want to reinvent the wheel.

I think Dday is one of if not the proudest moments for the US. Its interesting to put yourself in the shoes of those young guys, I mean the paratroopers had no guarantee that the army would even secure the beach and they could easily just be surrounded and taken as pows. Or imagine what it was like as an 18 year old to watch the door drop on your landing craft to see constant machine gun fire, no cover, men in the fetal position crying, hundreds of dead bodies, and injured men writhing in pain. It mustve been surreal.

I am simply defining the weight and sacrifice of the Soviet Union had on the reich which caused 10 million casualties and irreplaceable material losses that simply dwarfs the western front's necessity to end the war entirely.
