Downtown is the only section of Reno that offers high-rise condominiums like Park Tower, Arlington Towers, and The Palladio. These homes are within walking distance from most areas of interest in downtown. The Truckee River Walk is the site of Reno’s monthly Wine Walks. The National Automobile Museum has four galleries of automobiles from the late 19th century through the 20th century from the personal collection of William Bill Harrah, founder of Harrah’s Reno Hotel and Casino. Reach for new heights at Basecamp Climbing at the Whitney Peak Hotel. City Plaza meets the edge of the Truckee, displaying Jeff Schomberg’s “Believe” and Matthew Schultz’s “Space Whale.” Greater Nevada Field is home to the Reno Aces, the Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, as well as the Reno 1868 Football Club of the United Soccer League.
The original Reno arch was constructed on the corner of Virginia Street & Commercial Row in 1926. Today, this arch hangs over Lake Street between the Renaissance Hotel and National Automobile Museum. The arch that stands today on Virginia Street debuted in 1987 in place of its predecessor. In 2018, the city changed the arch’s scheme from red and gold to blue and silver.
Wingfield Park is on South Arlington Avenue in the middle of the Truckee River. This unique park is an island connecting the other streets of Reno through massive rock formations. The park includes a large amphitheater that hosts several spring and summer events and concerts.
Idlewild Park is another great recreational area west of downtown Reno. The park provides baseball and softball fields, a volleyball court, and tennis court. This park also connects to part of the Tahoe-Pyramid Bikeway that stretches from northern Pyramid Lake to Lake Tahoe. Food Truck Fridays is a local favorite annual summer event where dozens of local food trucks gather weekly to feed Reno foodies.
The Washoe County School District serves students of downtown through excellent schools like Mt. Rose Elementary School. Clayton Middle School helps students transition to the challenges of high school. Reno High School educates students in the downtown area. Reno High is the oldest school in downtown, predating Reno’s founding. All of these schools prepare students for college as many stay locally and attend the University of Nevada, Reno. UNR was founded in 1874 and moved to its permanent location of today in 1885. UNR overlooks all of Downtown Reno from McCarran Boulevard to the base of downtown.
