DP/30: The Oral History Of Hollywood

DP/30: The Oral History Of Hollywood

7 жыл бұрын

Louis Theroux is one of the great first-person documentarians, starting his career with Michael Moore (on TV) and becoming a staple on British TV for over 15 years now. His latest is a look at Scientology as only he could deliver it. Fiercely smart and funny, he adds to the current pack of Scientology documentation without treading over anyone else's perspective. Theroux chatted with David Poland about the film and his career.
Shot in Los Angeles, March 2017

There's a magic phrase that instantly shuts scientologists down: "I don't have any money." Sometimes you have to follow it up with "No, not even a little." The poor are not welcome in the realm of scientology.

poppey potter Exactly. Poor, ill, old. That’s why it takes so long to get to the top level and why they let them ‘escape’ when they do imo. They don’t want you hanging around when you get old and frail. They need able bodied people to work for them and give them money.

Apparently they put in mass credit card applications at the same time to increase the chance of acceptance as well as having people working high up within the major credit companies to help get applications through. They've also been known to badger really broke people into pestering non scientology family members for loans :$

Louis Theroux is possibly one of the greatest people living today. He's so knowledgeable, articulate and understanding. He also has a great sense of humour and even after all these years he's still so modest. I'm looking forward to his future work. I hope next year he'll do another mini-series of Weird Weekends to mark the show's 20th anniversary (and to round up the number of episodes to 20).

One thing I learned from Paul Theroux is that there is an island of cannibal, perhaps reformed, who call humans 'long pig' because that's what we taste like. And what is the most popular food, by far, on this island? Spam. I never was able to look at spam in the same way again. And I feel conflicted if I learn someone likes or eats Spam....do I tell them cannibals think it tastes like 'long pig'? Thank you, Paul Theroux❤️ Oh, yes, and the island of arsonists was a hilarious story as well.

"Going Clear": Scientology. "Going Diamond": Amway. "Spot the difference" exercise... 1) Cult assimilation techniques. 2)Religion. 3) Charismatic Leadership (to be worshiped, exalted and edified) 4)Money-obsessed. 5) Cognitive Dissonance. 6) Distancing from family. 7)Distancing from societal values. 8)Penalties for leaving the Cult. 9) Mass Rally events (provided at a high cost) 10)Evangelical approach to recruiting. 11)....Why bother? Just see above. A Cult is a Cult is a Cult.... Any further Q's?

It's a great Documentary if you don't go into it with "Going Clear" in the back of your mind. Very different style and maybe even trying to tell a different story. Louis's documentary felt a little less about Scientology and what those who left went through and more about the people themselves. Glad to hear he is working on a new tv series and another Docu. I'm a big fan

For those of us who don't know about the inner workings of the "church", it was a fascinating documentary. I especially liked watching Rathbun become unhinged when the tables were turned. The fact that he was bragging about how vicious and ruthless he was towards anyone who criticized or left the organization, and was trying to control the reenactments shows me how full of shit some people can be when they deny being part of a cult.

I thought the documentary was an interesting angle on Scientology. It wasn't a whole lot of stuff I hadn't heard before, but I liked the concept. In it, though, you really get to see a new side of Marty Rathbun. I can see how short his temper is, and the way he talks about his time in Scientology really sounds like bragging. Like "I was the top dog, and I left just to teach Miscavige a lesson". I hadn't thought of it before, but it made sense to me when Louis mused that he seemed like he left when he started to fall out of favor. It seemed to me that Scientology gave him power over people to make their lives hell, and now on the outside he's trying to do the same thing, but to the "church" now. It can't be easy going up against them, so anyone who successfully executes a program or doc against the "church" gets a lot of respect from me!
