Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is an interactive psychotherapeutic technique that can be very helpful for people who have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related symptoms or conditions. Research suggests that traumatic events can interfere with how the brain processes information. Consequently, the experience and memories can get “stuck” in the brain and make a person vulnerable to conscious or unconscious triggers from recollections, images, sounds, smells, and feelings that are reminiscent of the traumatic experience.
EMDR therapy uses bilateral hemispheric brain stimulation in the form of left to right eye movements, hand-held pulsating devices, headphones, or tapping on the knees to reduce or remove the emotional charges of traumatic memories. This therapy doesn’t block a memory, but rather it activates mechanisms in the brain that help you process the memory and emotions it evokes.

Like I told my therapist at one of the first sessions of my EMDR with buzzers. "Who needs to go to the bar when you can go get EMDR." I gave her permission to use that phrase I came up with, and now she has a sign in her room that says just that. It's amazing how it works, 20 years since my son passed, and a lot of childhood trauma. I'm doing so much better than I ever have. Thank you for getting the word out about this!!! I want to shout it from the rooftops. Everyone needs to have this done.

EMDR helped me recover from false accusations from someone in leadership that I really admired. The accusations went deep into me until I believed that he was good so I must have done what he said…though I could not remember it I accused myself of lying. I began to feel that I was untrustworthy and that God could not love me. After the first session of EMDR where my therapist said little more than “breathe “ my brain began to show me that what I saw and experienced was truth. I was lovable. God adores me. The therapist did not tell me those things, she just listened to my tears and my hopelessness that turned to forgiveness and peace.

Is it still as effective with old stuff that’s had a lot of processing? The pain is long gone but it’s made me very prone to anxiety triggers.

Sometimes something gets processed but there is more that needs to be processed. Sounds like you are still experiencing effects from some unresolved or unprocessed trauma. Maybe see your therapist or check out a different EMDR therapist? A suggestion from an EMDR trained therapist.

I saw a “short” video of Dr Amen but it disappeared before I could watch it. So I looked for a channel for Dr Amen and then found this video. This is the best video I’ve seen on EMDR YET! I am trained in EMDR (2009) and so grateful to have found a therapy that helps so many ppl. In 2013 I took a training to treat addictive behaviors with Bi-Lateral Stimulation and have since seen ppl quit or decrease biting nails, picking skin, pulling hair, gambling, anger outbursts, cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Then, of course, we must work on the trauma that was a catalyst for the addictive behavior. ***It is key that a person must WANT to stop the addictive behavior.*** Your video is so good, I hope you can produce more covering topics like helping addictive behaviors, dissociative personality disorder, OCD, and more about treating schizophrenia would be fascinating! Thank you to Dr. Rouazoin and Dr. Amen!

Many individuals simply can not afford any therapy. Is this something any individual can do with some success to offer relief?

Some EMDR therapists take medicaid. Cost should not keep ppl from getting treatment. The bigger problem is that so many ppl are needing help that many therapists are filled. Finding out is a therapist has a wait list might help. I found that when a therapist understands how much a person is willing to do their part of keeping appointments and dedicating time for the sessions for several weeks or maybe longer, therapists love to help people who really want the help. Some therapists have adjustable fees for those with no insurance. I hope that helps. (from an EMDR-trained therapist.)

I’m sorry to hear that. I have seen ppl who said they had EMDR therapy and it didn’t help. Later when we did some EMDR treatment, they said that it was different from what they had before and that it was effective. Some therapists are really not comfortable with using EMDR and that may affect the outcome. I found that EMDR is so effective and very forgiving, and most ppl have some improvement; even when they say they didn’t, they will say “I feel calmer”. I hope you find someone who can help with your concerns. (from an EMDR-trained therapist.)
