Whattup my Psych for Sore Guys (and gals)
Your third favourite forensics psychiatrist was on This Morning… this morning!
We discussed the recent prison sentence of a cyber-flasher.
From my professional experience, this can be a risk factor for more serious sexual offending for a few reasons - due to:
Desensitization and Habituation:
Repeatedly exposing oneself might desensitize the offender to the negative consequences of the act. This could lead them to become bolder and progress to more serious offenses in an attempt to escalate the intensity of the arousal they seek.
Validation Seeking: For some offenders, indecent exposure might be a way to seek validation or a reaction. If they get a response, even a negative one, it might reinforce the behaviour and lead them to seek a stronger reaction in the future.
Testing Boundaries and Gauging Risk (with the intention of committing more serious Predatory Behaviour).
I think that this was very relevant to the case of Wayne Couzens.

Oh god please, finally. It should be a crime everywhere. Though not all flashers should necessarily be jailed (unless it's very bad, like here) because we'd end up jailing a significant % of the population, but their punishment should be harsh, uncomfortable and long-term.

Never heard of "cyber flashing" I'm in the states.

I am glad that cyberflasing is now illegal. No to unsolicited pics. Prison is appropriate especially if the recipient is underage. You will still get creeps but they might think twice. I would be interested to know if the majority of adult heterosexual men would report being cyberflashed by an attractive woman.

I'm going to hazard a guess and say not a chance for the vast majority of men. There are always going to be a fraction of outliers in any generalisation, but I can't imagine this being more than 0.0000001%. The only time that I think they might is if they know the person and they specifically want that person to be punished, not because they were affected by the image but because they have a personal grievance with that female. That's my guess anyway.

@@andygeary3531That's what I thought too 😊 Your punishment theory is interesting. A male friend of mine said that if he received a unsolicited naked pic from a woman it would make his day. I totally get how people of either sex would find this offensive too.

@@lisawickwar6660 I can imagine some men being irritated by it, but not being traumatised to the point that they feel the need to report it. Like I said before, I think the majority of reports will be done because they want to make the other person suffer rather than because the imagine caused them considerable distress. It reminds me of when people who used to watch babestation used to report women who accidentally flashed their crotch despite having their top exposed for the entire show. Did them people report the women because seeing their crotch upset them or did they report them because they are sadistic and wanted the women to suffer because they slipped up? I'm not trying to compare the flasher with a sex worker, the reference is to compare the people reporting and their motives for doing so. If the image was public so kids might see it then yes I agree it should be reported. If it was a DM sent to another adult then I don't think it should be reported otherwise the authorities would drown in millions of reports. I have never flashed (I don't participate in social media apart from youtube), but I have been flashed when I was an adolescent by an older woman, I was about 14 and she was about 50. I didn't care, I just thought that she was probably mentally disturbed or something.

Im 23yo woman from finland and this has unfortunately been so normalized for me that it came as surprise that there could be any consequences with that kind of behavior. First time i witnessed this was when i was only 14yo, it didnt happen to me personally but my middle school frends were on kik where they had "boyfrends"(groomers, most of them werent minors) who sended dick pics and it made me feel uncomfy but my frends just said that i was too sensitive(i wasnt, they were just groomed aka brainwashed) When i have used dating apps now as an adult there has been couple of instances where guy has approached me with dickpics, the chat didnt continue because starting it by dickpick aint very appealingXD Sexsting is ofc different thing and it differs from flashing by consent and by people having at minimum chatted some time before that, it can happen during the first day of chatting but its not like your first messages are dickpics

Hi Dr Das, this is very important... could you please explain why some men (and women) would expose themselves? What's the thinking (if any) behind? What is the psychological path? Thank you!

Great that it is a crime, not in Sweden yet, though. We are slow on IT matters unfortunately. Very good interview. Your points came across well.

Oh, sorry, it actually is classified as sexual harassment in Sweden since January 1, 2024. Good to know.
