The last slo-mo is priceless. Crowd starts to get off their feet... the approach, Dr. J's massive hands first bringing the ball down below his waste, before take-off and a cradle-windmill perfect dunk. You couldn't stage a better dunk in 50 takes. And this was live and in-game... Goose bumps.

When he was in the ABA, this was commonplace. WHENEVER he was in the open floor... EVERYBODY stood up, in anticipation, because they knew something special was about to happen. Make no mistake, he was the lone reason the NBA merged with the ABA. He was the one player the league had to have. Singular, unique, one of a kind.

He was 33 years old during that play. Nearing the end. Amazing athlete. My favorite dunk by any player. Yeah, a lot of people have come up with more physically impressive dunks (including Erving), but this one....in game dunk, big game, end of game, contested by an All-time great NBA defender. And with all of that, instead of just powering to the rim and dunking, like any normal great player would do, he puts the flourish on it with the cradle. And he combines power with sublime grace.

Michael Cooper was an eight -time All NBA Defensive player who was also the Lakers best shot blocker. He gave the Sixers fits. What was remarkable about this entire sequence was Dr J forced the turnover but then had to beat Michael Cooper to the basketball (which he did) and then find a way to not get his shot blocked and score on him. That's what makes this the best dunk of all time.

What’s really special about this dunk is that when he ‘rocked the baby’ it was functional. It was done less to be flashy and more to fool the opposition. As opposed to the unnecessary and random double pumps and so on you see today purely for show. They’re fun to watch and all, but Dr J combined form with function. And that’s special. Props to Chic for coming up with the phrase on the spot. Chick was the wordsmith of basketball announcers. No one like the late great Chick Hearn.

He definitely perfected it. I used to watch him play as a kid as was amazed at his incredible moves and hang time. He also was great at the reverse layup. I think he invented that move as well. He would drive around the basket and turn around and lay the ball up on the other side of the basket and not go out of bounds. It was amazing and I haven’t seen anyone do that move, the reverse layup, since him doing it back then. Incredible and legendary player! He only managed to win one Championship with the Sixers. An ordinary player would have gone for a simple layup. But the Doctor operated this play. He comes off the steal with a fast break down the slideline. Takes 2 maybe 3 dribbles and a giant 1 and a half step to leap in the air with one hand and after the last dribble while palming the ball cuffing it with windmill flair and effectively dunking it all in a matter of seconds! I always overlooked the grandeur of this dunk until I took a closer look and realized it really is amazing. The fact of taking the ball with one hand in this way is very elegant, but it is above all, I think, the level of coordination of the whole body and the fact that he has done all this so naturally, without preparation that makes it a true basketball masterpiece.

Dr. J has the best dunk ever and the best layup ever, both against the Lakers.

Coop added to that fantastic dunk floating under the Doctor and ducking his head under the glass. Fantastic play!

At its highest level, basketball is an art form. As great as Mj and LBJ, Wilt and all those others are, Julius is still the most aestetically beautiful player in the history of the NBA.

When I think of memorable moments of basketball that rock the cradle dunk by the Doc comes to mind.

This dunk is the single GOAT. It's one thing to dunk in a contest, but IN GAME against a dynasty? Look, I'm a Laker fan going back to Baylor & West. Even when watching this in real time, I let out a whooop for what was an immortal gem. Thanks Doc, and a hat tip to Laker Legend Chicky Baby on the call with Bruin Keith Erickson on color!

This is the Greatest Dunk Ever because nobody had even thought of doing anything like that before! To do that on the fly in a real game at full speed is crazy.
