At 1:19:45, a trick I have found for folks struggling with decision paralysis is to make the list shorter by identifying what are things you actually do NEED to do. Like make dinner, or pay rent, etc. Get 6 of those, then roll a dice (or RNG one with Google). My mom went from agonizing for an hour over what to get started on to completing 4 things on her list in the next hour. Sometimes your problem with getting started is just paralysis from having to decide what to prioritize. Bonus: if you roll and think "oh no, not that one" it's for 1 of 2 reasons. First case, you really, really don't want to do it. If that's the case you can either figure out why and break down that problem further and then get it done... or remove it from the list and roll with a different task. After all, they all need to be done and if agonizing is going to mean you don't do this (and thus anything) that's no good. Or the second possibility-you miscategorized it and it actually isn't something you need to do. You're avoiding doing it because other things are actually more important to you. So remove it from the list and roll again.

There IS a mystical component to life once you see it. Then buddha’s logic comes into play. Put simply does this cause suffering? I saw something on Radiolab that showed that psychopaths and buddhist monks have similar scans of their brains. Very strange.

Haven't watched the video yet but this is a great comment. I think it would accomplish multiple good things, by writing it out unfiltered, you're bringing awareness and recognition to your initial emotions, and by sending it or maybe a cleaned up version of it you're practicing authentic communication that's as close to what you're feeling, each time you do it you're teaching yourself your initial fear response is unwarranted and therefore build self confidence whilst getting as close as possible the outcomes you want. Yesterday i was done with everything i wanted to, but had level design and some final polish to do.. Felt like exhausted. Even as i woke up. Mentally not on the state i need to be. I don't know if i could have done it at all, but especially not in the time. Just finished all sketches for the 20 levels i intended to build! While watching this. I think Thor is the first person I've encountered who has spoken about having a sense of something "other," being curious about it, but also being ok with perhaps never knowing exactly what it is. Any time I've tried to describe that sensation to someone, they either don't seem to be able to grasp it or they don't believe that I fully mean it. (It was also a little funny that that's exactly where the recording cut off, lol.) I love listening to these discussions with Thor. I hope there will be more in the future. ❤

1:48:20 I feel like that thrid thing comes from a realization and alignment of the first 2. So its not so much a separate third thing but a combination of the first two. What fees right and good combined with the knowledge that you have the skills, capabilities, or potential to further those things. Thor felt good about helping the ferret, he also just likes ferrets, then he realized he has the ability, the power to make the thing he likes even better. Like when you see someone digging a hole and feel like helping make it deeper or wider. Those who can should, with great power comes great responsibility, when those concepts align with a thing you actually want to do it feels like magic, like a calling, like you were born to do that thing.

It makes me think of a choir actually. It's like most of the time and for most people there are two parts of music being sung. They're most of the time doing their own things. But the moments they come together they harmonize and create resonance. I think by living his life "truthfully" and with "transparency" he's just learned to create that resonant harmonization within himself for just about everything he does. Taking this further, it also makes sense that people with mental health issues would struggle with this both because of stigma that they're raised with but also how the internal voice may lie to the individual. By that voice "lying," it makes it incredibly hard to live your life "truthfully." This would be true of any mental health issue that skews or warps your sense of reality around you, whether that be skewing how you think others see you or how you see yourself, or just the world itself.

one thing to tie this whole thing together is that thors childhood of playing video games and being able to put aside his feelings to solve something in game. it helped him in life , when he was homeless he leaned into that side of himself he developed form playing video games. it changed him for the better , then on. he even describes the intentional binding processes he went though . and on a day to day basis if hes feeling any extreme emotion this kicks in. and helps balance himself.

I have adhd I finished hvac in 51 days. Studied hard, but mainly because I also have a love for learning. I had a lot of immediate feedback from my instructor. And one day he started giving us review tests after studying an entire module, and I loved that! Was significantly more engaged compared to my only feedback being when I take my official test and getting a fail. Another way I give myself feedback in studying that's similar is by making close to every sentence or paragraph having at least 1 to 3 questions. These questions are to stay on topic, they must be found directly within the texts. So If the book says "this is centrifugal compressor, it does x" I will write "what is a centrifugal compressor? What does it do?" Or "what compressor does x?" If I want it to be harder. It's MUCH better I find then just summarizing the paragraphs into a single word (which still got me high passing scores on all my tests) but I find this much much more amusing and fun. Interesting. So long as my ego drops and isn't afraid of failure and accepts getting the questions wrong. Which I generally don't. But that's the issue with cognition. Sometimes it's like that somedays sometimes it's not lol

For me getting into a habit of doing something consistently is as easy as stopping doing it consistently (with the exception of addictive substances or behaviours). It usually takes me 3 days of repeating a certain action at a certain time of day; if i buy a specific food item 3 days in a row i most likely will keep buying it. Same goes for working out, playing a certain video game, etc. My issue is the cycle can break just as easily, sometimes life happens and i can't do it, or i eat out, get sick etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong but when I see people mention they don't get to have fulfilling or intelligent conversation, they seem to look for them in the wrong places. If your social circle consists of people who aren't interested in that, well, then what do you expect. Or someone who doesn't feel like their conversation with colleagues aren't deep and fulfilling, then I'll ask; are you expecting that from coworkers at a construction site? Are you expecting that from your colleagues at a office for data entry? Do you expect these conversations in a house party or a rave? Not to say that deep and intelligent conversations can't occur there, but it's a statistics game. Maybe there's a philosophy group in your town/ city, chess club, online communities that you're interested in? In my experience it's mostly about environment. Do the things you want to do, and you'll meet like minded people.

Listening to Thor talk about how he deals with disarming his emotions reminds me of the Soviet spy in the movie "Bridge of Spies" which I kind of use myself. Whenever the character is placed in a situation where he people expect him to be freaking out and they ask him why he isn't, he simply responds "Would it help?" That, plus the idea of "the only thing you can control is your own reaction" really helps me personally. I wonder if Thor has seen that movie, I feel like he would like it

THAT THING ABOUT THE WHIRLWIND. I always think about the same thing: How on earth are you supposed to get or discover "easter eggs" without devs telling you about it or someone spoiling it or showcasing it in a video (nowadays) or back in the day without a magazine. It is one of the reasons why I don't like easter eggs very much (of that kind) and I also respect speedrunners a little bit in that sense.

39:38 As an athlete, this is extremely similar to the drive of nailing a new trick. There's so much work, effort and failure, but when you get that one, it's such a huge payoff 40:40 This too! Everyone who has that trick or has tried it knows what kind of mountain you climbed

The segment about league was so funny to me. Back when I used to really care about playing ranked, I could always trace back to the moment my mentality lost us the game as an adc main. If for some reason at level 9, 14 minutes in, if I didn’t actively buy the blue trinket to replace the yellow one, that’s how I knew that I mentally gave up. It has nothing to do with the impact and everything to do with its implication. Blue trinket can be used at farther distances to ensure that I can walk a certain way without dying to something preventable. Whether I was ahead, but tilted or behind and hopeless, there was around an 85% correlation between my losses having a yellow trinket in my inventory.

OMG such a perfect cliffhanger could not have been made even on purpose... We’ll never know what the end of the Thor’s train of thought was and weirdly I’m actually fine with that 😅 Such a great combo to listen to, makes one seriously think about life and decision making. Thank you, guys!

18:18 it’s more so I understand what it takes, it’s just that failing has always had a negative outcome in my experience; so I fell into accepting the bare minimum because that’s easier than the looming thought of no good occurring through hard work in the past.

I just got to the part mentioning how perception is one of the core issues in todays mindsets. Since this is HG, I have to mention Superliminal, a very unique and short game that revolves around just that! I don't know if Dr.K played it yet, but if not I think he would really enjoy the topic and way of presentation the game achieves.

Okay here's my problem. Mindset absolutely matters. I was bronze and wanted to climb. I modified my mindset, I started asking myself how *I* messed up when I died, or when my team lost. I did get better. I did climb. I climbed from bronze to platinum, even! Over a few months, sure, but I eventually made it... And then immediately went on a losing streak. And i kept trying to isolate *my* problems, to see what *I* could do better, to see how I could improve... But I sill kept losing. And I'm sure somewhere in there I stopped looking at myself and came to the conclusion that there had to to be something the rest of the team wasn't doing right. So how do you keep doing that even when after looking at everything you could do, resolving to do things better, you still end up losing? Losing so bad you fall all the way back down? How do you break the glass ceiling of that cycle?

1:58:56 If you stop trying to avoid and escape consequences, if in fact you lean into and engage with life and consequence, you open your eyes and ears to do so. You maximize the conditions for learning. This is the choice of Faith; it's not particular to a religion, but it aligns you with Truth as a living ideal, and engenders interconnectedness and health within and without, though it may involve a period of suffering and disintegration. We have to forge ourselves anew in cooperation with the side of reality that nourishes growth but also reveals and burns chaff. So goes the theory, not that I'm close to a finalized example by any means. Best wishes to fellow strugglers. Let's try to make something of ourselves and each other.

Hey Dr K would you ever consider having someone on staff to listen to the sound setup and offer suggestions? I know right now you are balancing people at the beginning but idk how you can do that when your own voice is part of the balance. Just some thoughts for this one: Thor's voice is too loud still and he is clipping which means his gain is set too high on his mic. Your sound is good just would be better if this was part of a private stream doing setup tech bs and then the stream is just the conversation. The sound setup could be 5-10 minutes of work then the tech can be dismissed if they want. Edit got 5 minutes in and y'all seem to have fixed the too loud
