The changing flags were brilliant. Also, Doctor Kaufman *should* appear in every subsequent Bond film. He should always die, be back in the next one, and this should never be acknowledged.

Dr. Kaufman is played by Vincent Schiavelli, who was also at the beginning of "Amadeus" (1984) as Salieri's valet and played "Frederickson" in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975). He was a character actor with a *loong* list of film and TV appearances (over 120.)

I love that "I am just a professional doing a job!" as if he truly believed Bond would absolve him because of that. "Wait, I'm being paid to do this!" "Yeah which means you... could have SAID NO???" And that 'job' was killing his wife and Bond. And he knew Bond was also a secret agent. What a terrible line.

Still the most incredible scene of the entire James Bond series of this podcast. I love that this character spawned a new award. And everything about him is so wild... like: The absolutely worst way to do ANY accent especially a German one. His weird little mustache. The tone deafness, EVERYTHING is so weird lmao.
@jamescollinge5043
@jamescollinge5043 Жыл бұрын
I disagree - similar to Jared Harris in the Man from Uncle reboot, or Daniel Craig in Knives Out, I don't think Schiavelli was aiming for an accurate accent. He was a phenomenal character actor who'd done dialects convincingly before, so it makes more sense to me that Kaufman was him being cartoonish on purpose to make the scene more interesting
@tahrey
@tahrey 18 күн бұрын
@@jamescollinge5043 Alternate theory: Kaufman isn't German, but was _pretending_ to be as part of his overall cover, just in case someone was listening. I bet that's not even his real name. Why bother telling the truth to someone you're about to kill anyway? Only main supervillains do that, and they always get their ass handed to them whilst monologuing. Just make up some garbage to distract him for a moment, then shoot him mid sentence. (trying to remember where I did actually see someone do that...)

The funny thing about Kaufman to me is that he's so confident even though from the first second he appears on screen it's obvious to the audience that Bond will kill or humiliate him by the end of the scene. You're just waiting for him to screw up as soon as he shows up

Devon jokes about Kaufmann showing up in No Time to Die, and I think this episode came out before they saw that movie. But honestly I think Dr. Obrechev from No Time to Die is *even* worse than this guy

When Dr. Obrechev suddenly goes turbo-racist and immediately gets killed in No Time To Die, it gave me the vibe of a tabletop RPG where everyone's agreed on a gritty, dark, realistic spy thriller campaign, but Dr. Obrechev's player is the one who takes it too far and drops an ethnic slur because "What? We said it would be gritty and dark! Don't be snowflakes!" so the GM INSTANTLY boots the player and has his character die.

“Kill the tone and pacing”? He’s in it for one scene, and he is nothing but amazing. The only thing he kills, besides Paris, is his performance.
@killjamesbondhighlights
@killjamesbondhighlights 4 ай бұрын
Vincent Schiavelli absolutely bosses this performance, but both the performance and the scene are completely unnecessary to the film and do actively harm it structurally and tonally. However, removing it would not make the film *good,* only better. And when sliced out of the movie, the Kaufman scene is a work of genius, so I do think it kills the tone and pacing, but also it absolutely should not be removed.

Also in terms of They Just Didn't Care in terms of this film, the picture on the TV clearly not filling the screen because they couldn't be bothered to get the aspect ratio and/or resolution of whatever's connected to it correct (or just record it onto an actual tape / DVD through a camera) made me go "huh wait what" when it flashed by initially, and is making my skin crawl to look at in freezeframe now. That's the kind of crap I wouldn't let slide in some kind of amateur production, because it's so easy to get right if you're actually even an experienced hobbyist, let alone a supposed professional in the field. TV broadcasts have overscan. It's something that I've had to account for when making my own VideoCDs of bootlegged anime back in the day. Which means it should so clearly look like a fake video clip to the eye of someone who, for instance, _makes hollywood movies for a living._ Why and how was that allowed?
@tahrey

Everyone else is losing it over the flags, whilst I'm just here appreciating the tight-ass lipsynching job. I've had to try and line people's OWN words back up with their mouths because of some stupid video file desync before and that was hard enough... more than half of these are good enough to fool a Top of the Pops producer even though there's absolutely no reason or guarantee that the podders' lines will fit the mouth flaps. That said, what's the one which is blue over red with some kind of gold crest in the top left corner?
