According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States, with over 600,000 Americans dying every year.
Dr. Kim William, M.D. knows better than anyone the importance of utilizing a plant-based diet to combat heart disease. As the former president of the American College of Cardiology, he is a leading figure in the movement to fight cardiovascular disease with a plant-based diet.
He has board certifications in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, nuclear medicine, nuclear cardiology, and cardiovascular computed tomography. He has served on the Pritzker School of Medicine faculty, the Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, and since 2013 at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where he is the head of the cardiology department. Williams has served as president of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, chairman of the Coalition of Cardiovascular Organizations, and chairman of the Association of Black Cardiologists' board, among other positions.
In the interview, Dr. Kim Williams explains the science of cholesterol, the latest breakthrough in heart disease research, and much more!

Thank you for another wonderful interview. I have immense respect for Dr. Williams, and I was fortunate to meet him a couple years ago. It is difficult to explain the value of this interview because there was some surprising new information, and I think it is time for all of us to review recent research. Keep up the great work Dr. Marbas! FYI, I use psyllium husk mixed with water as an egg substitute/binder when cooking or baking, it works even better than ground flaxseed. I still use flaxseed for some applications for the Omega 3 benefits.

Dr. Marbas, to add to my wish list for further understanding of LDL issues, could you consider having Dr. Williams come back and talk about LDL-C oxidation. I just read a commentary that Dr. Garth Davis and Brenda Davis brought to my attention: "Cardiovascular Harm From Egg Yolk and Meat: More Than Just Cholesterol and Saturated Fat" and one statement in there says, "We suggest that the consumption of meat and egg yolk increases cardiovascular risk and that this is probably mainly attributed to their postprandial effects. For ≈4 hours after a high‐fat/high‐cholesterol meal, there is a marked increase in the oxidation of LDL‐C, endothelial dysfunction, and arterial inflammation." If we are eating a healthy WFPB diet, I keep wondering how is our LDL getting oxidized if we are not consuming foods that cause this? And we are not smoking either which I would assume promotes this oxidation. Why are WFPB eaters at risk for endothelium dysfunction, plaque build-up if we are not eating foods that cause this oxidation in the way animal and processed foods do? I would love to understand this issue more!

I'm always grateful when interviews discuss secondary prevention since most seem to mainly touch on primary. I've had heart events but am currently doing well with LDL in the 30's with 10mg of Rosuvastatin and an Esselstyn-level dietary regime lots of cardio and weights. I don't want to have any more such events, and so take the approach of doing everything possible, diet, exercise, medication, etc., etc.

One of the most informative interviews I've heard in a long time! Dr. Williams is so knowledgeable about the current science and yet can make it understandable to the layman without lots of jargon! Great stuff!

Dr. Marbas, This is a phenomenol interview! And I feel in the time allowed, you just got to the tip of the iceberg, especially talking about the cholesterol issue with people already doing the WFPB lifestyle. I wish he could become a regular expert on your show considering CVD is our number 1 killer. It woud be wonderful to share more case stories so folks can hear how to potentially address the issue of elevated LDL while eating WFPB. It would be great too to hear directly from Dr. Williams his perspective on the EVOO issue. I heard you say a couple of times in your case study, the person was no oil and I wondered does Dr. Williams agree that no oil is best when a person has elevated LDL or is some EVOO acceptable or is a moderate amount as listed in a combined ACC/AHA journal article ok? As you know there is debate on this question and I so much want to hear Dr. William's understanding of this issue. I am aware that a vegan cardiologist who says Dr. Williams is her mentor states that EVOO in moderate amounts is not a problem for CVD and I want to know if Dr. Williams agrees or disagrees with that position considering she sees him as her mentor. It was quite illuminating to hear Dr. Williams talk about recent research regarding HDL (too high is no longer a good thing), and the CIMT test being worthless for help in statin discussions (we won't pursue that test now which we were planning too). Thanks so much for having him as a guest and if you can, please bring him back for more enlightening knowledge on how best to protect ourselves from CVD.

This is an excellent, data-packed interview! I switched from a low-dose Atorvastatin to Rosuvastatin 5 mg daily and my increased liver enzymes went back to normal. (They were elevated but not severely so on Atorvastatin.) I am on the Esselstyn diet and take a statin to drive my cholesterol lower because of past angina/heart attack and very low HDL. Total cholesterol is about 110 on Rosuvastatin and 170 with no statin. Can you add a link for the risk calculator? This would be helpful to show other unhealthy people I know.

I perceive a problem with the ACHA risk calculator. Upon entering my data (no disease, no meds, 62yo white male, 121/69 BP, total cholesterol 156, LDL 61. The calculator yields a 6.6% chance of a 10 year event. HOWEVER if I simply change the LDL to 76 that risk is REDUCED to 5.6%. There seems to be a huge problem with the calculator as it seems to weight the risk based on a 50/50 division of total cholesterol between HDL/LDL which consistently yields a better result regardless of total cholesterol. I don't think this is the message I heard from Dr. Williams but I could have missed something. Even entering total cholesterol of 200 with LDL at 100 yields a better outcome than my actual numbers of 156-LDL61. Seems like the "tool" is simply designed to sell statin drugs...

Hi Mark, you need to enter HDL not LDL. Hence why the percentage decreased when you added a higher number.
