I've been wanting to have a look at the Dr. Mario series for a bit now, and with Dr. Mario World just releasing, I think now is the perfect time to dive into the Dr. Mario series and find some cool unused goodies!

I think the unused sprites at 8:40 and 8:56 might have been part of an unused intro cut scene where the meteor sprite would have fell from the sky, be surrounded by the ball of light/electricity, have the bolt of lightning come streaming out, and finally the viruses coming out and infecting everyone.

Yeah but they're off-beat in many places and both of them struggle to stay in the same key as the one that they started with. They're also not *technically* musically pleasing (as a musician, though other people could think so) and they seem like they were just instrumental tests. Note that one of them is just the drums, while the other consists mainly of instruments. Sorry to burst your bubble (I guess)

I checked out the April 27, 1990 prototype of this game - the very first build to carry the Dr. Mario name - and here's what I discovered so far... * No virus cinema intermission scenes present yet (when you play levels 5, 10, 15 or 20 on Medium or High speed), and thus the final version of the song for it that we've first heard in the Virus 1990 prototype (PlayChoice-10) two-player game over isn't there yet, either. * The two-player game over/win theme is the final version.

Those two unused tracks sound unfinished, but also... The second one uses a very common Japanese drum cadence which I found interesting. That first one though reminded me of something else. A famous song. Then it hit me... it's the saxophone hook from "The Heat is On" by Glenn Frey, just really slowed down.

The Virus 1989 and 1990 builds use the sounds from Tetris played at 2x speed. I did a TAS of the 1990 build.

@8:39 I think it's supposed to be a meteorite that crashed to the planet carrying the viruses from the depths of outer space. Dr. Mario has an ending screen where it looks like after you beat the game a U.F.O. shows up to take the viruses back, so it fits. Edit: I seriously thought that snowman sprite thingy was a seal!

There's actually more currently-unused content in Dr. Mario World's files than what were shown. Like a few more single-player worlds. www.spriters-resource.com/resources/sheets/116/119471.png The medals shown after the sky world (the cloud with the mushroom) are of currently unavailable worlds. There's a mine, a carnival, a Mario Galaxy-inspired area, and a DK-style jungle.

Looks like the white thing could have been a sort of wild powerup, possibly obtained when you got a cascade of three or you make two matches at once or something. It would have been placeable in even a one high space and could match any color, making it possible to make three matches in one move. Obviously Nintendo would've chosen to not allow extra white vitamins if possible had it been the case.
