I came here today because I need to hear Maya Angelou's voice. I need hope that not all is lost. I need hope that there is still infinite good in people, and that no matter what, love trumps hate. Dr. Angelou, I so wish you were here today, sister. The world needs your words and wisdom right now. Help us heal.

As someone who was bigoted as a youngster, l look back now with sadness and remorse over ignorant comments I once made. Now as a somewhat wiser teacher I showed this to students last year and told a little of her story. It had a profound effect and the reality is words can are the most powerful tool for both good and bad. Rip.

The world needs Dr. Angelou so bad right now. I know she is resting in peace wherever she may be. Anytime I’m struggling with the ugly in the world I come back and listen to her speaking. She saw the beauty in the ugliest of situations. She spoke so much truth. She has touched so many peoples lives with her words including my own. I named my youngest daughter Maya in her honor and in hopes that she will grow up to be as strong as Maya Angelou.

How wonderful to listen to a true fellow Christian as Maya Angelou, such a delight to find another one who is such a sweet follower of the one true God. Please May we all learn that it more important to follow the only true God , Father, Son and Holy Ghost, and banish forevermore the works , temptations of the devil who would lead us astray. Killing others in any circumstances is not the solution, just ask Jesus to take over the situation and He will guide us to His safety, and His way . Mrs Deirdre Elizabeth Heisch Boustead Loftus.

Having a doctorate in education and understanding the notion of earned and honorary doctorates, I understand Dr. Maya Angelou's usage of the title Doctor. “The practice [of awarding honorary degrees] dates back to the Middle Ages…” The University of Oxford awarded Lionel Woodville an honorary degree in the late 1470s making this the earliest honorary degree on record. Evangelist Billy Graham and Founding Father Benjamin Franklin both received honorary doctorates and used the prefix Doctor. Dr. Angelou received just over four dozen honorary doctorates in her lifetime for her prolific body of work. In total she has written far more than the typical person who earns one doctorate (typically dissertations run between 100 and 200 pages; though, some exceed 300 pages); and certainly more have read her works than have read our dissertations. In the end, some recipients of honorary doctorates use the title, some do not. It is their prerogative unless specifically restricted by the awarding institution.

She's got that right!!! A lot of people don't seem to bother to be polite or kind anymore. Seems like a lot of singers, bands, rappers, decide to throw swear words in their songs just for the hell of it. And I'm guilty too, I've had to deal with so much over the past few years, sometimes I just feel rage at the world. And that's not how I want to be, and that's not really me, but the feelings are there. I'm really frustrated a lot of the time. We're living in a frightening world these days.

There is always one "scholar" who wants to correct someone. You are right. That is a quote from John. I too may have made the mistake as it is written just as Genesis is written..."in the beginning". At any rate, it takes nothing from her message and I do not fault a world renowned poet for mixing up scriptures in her 80s. O_o

The scripture she used is not Old Testament and is not in Genesis. She quoted "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God." This passage of scripture is New Testament, found in the Book of John chapter 1 verse 1. RIP Dr. Angelou

It is in the book of John in the New Testament, not in Genesis. And the word refers to the greek logos, which also means thought, and became a philosophical euphemism apart from the meaning "word" in english.

I'm interested in this topic & appreciate her conviction. Perhaps someone can reach out to her and let her know her quote is not from Genesis but John 1:1. I think it would help support her insights. I'm guessing she probably realized it after she said it & was not able to edit the video. I do hope Oprah gets to know the Bible better (at least someone on her staff) so she can edit these types of things or catch them before they are aired. Find Motivationeer if you have the chance. Thanks.

Look, I'm not disagreeing with what she says. It's some good stuff, but it would make her a lot more credible if she quoted the bible correctly. The scripture she quotes is found at the beginning of the Gospel of John in the New Testament, NOT Genesis.
