“Bond, James Bond.” 007 (Sean Connery) delivers the iconic line for the first time to Sylvia Trench (Eunice Gayson) in DR. NO at Le Cercle, Les Ambassadeurs Club, London. Producer Cubby Broccoli said, “Those words against the insistent rhythm of the ‘James Bond Theme’ was not just good cinema, it became the signature which has run through all of the Bond films.” Directed by Terence Young.

@@liamfitzgerald7217 it's perfect for the character, remaining cool in a stressful/nerve wracking situation is what Bond is all about. For those wondering what they're playing, it's a version of Baccarat called 'Chemin De Fer' (the French word for "railway" as it is a quicker style of Baccarat). This version of Baccarat was the "in-vogue" version preferred by British royalty and high society in the early/mid 20th century, and therefore Ian Flemming and James Bond. The game is a distant cousin to blackjack, except in Chermin De Fer the "best" total to get is a 9, not 21. All face cards (jack, queen, king, and 10s) have a value of zero, and aces are worth 1. 9 is the highest hand, and if your total goes beyond 9, (ie, you have a 5 and a 7) your score is the last digit of your hand. So 5+7 = 12, therefore, you go back to only having a score of 2. After each player is dealt their 2 cards, each inspects their hand. If either player has an 8 (2nd highest score) or a 9 (highest score) each must announce their hand and the game is over, with the highest winning. You hear the table manager (the croupier) calling "huit a la banque" (8 to the Bank) and "neuf a la banque" (9 to the Bank) when Bond turns over these hands. If neither player has an 8 or a 9, each may "hit" for a third card. Taking the previous example of having a 5+7 (2), you would certainly hit. If you receive a 7 (5+7+7) you now have 9 (19) and a very strong hand. James Bond is playing the role of the "banker" (banque) and his stake and hand is competing against everyone else at the table, with Ms Trench playing that of the "common hand" (punto), that is, she is playing on behalf of everyone else at the table. Normally, Chermin De Fer has multiple players at the table pooling their funds collectively to compete against the bank's stake. In this scene, however, Ms Trench continues to match the bank's full stake herself and competes individually against it. When Ms Trench loses to Bond she calls "Suivre" which is French for "to follow". This allows her to keep leading the table as the "punto" against the Bank by increasing her stake for the next hand. Without calling Suivre the role Ms Trench is playing would pass to her left, or to whomever can stake the next highest amount against the Bank. You in fact hear the player to her left (our right) @0:42 call to take over as "punto" when Ms Trench loses, only for her to call Suivre and maintain the seat (and non-verbally apologise to the gentleman for calling Suivre over the top of him) If Ms Trench wins, the bank's wager is apportioned to the rest of the table (and the house). Should the bank be unable to continue staking, the shoe moves to the next player willing to play as the bank. For those further wondering, each pink betting tab is £100 which would be equivalent to £2,000 in 2021 (aprox. $2750 USD). Each time they play they're staking £200 which is about $5,000 USD each hand. So yes, they're rolling deep! I hope that explains the game for those interested.

Thanks for the explanation. I'm too poor to play Chemin De Fer, so I play at the cheapo $10 table where the dealer draws all the cards and the players just bet Player or Banker. Maybe in some alternate universe I could be born a high-roller like Bond. A man can always dream.

@@samweirich5973 I just made an edit to my original post based on this. They're playing in the early 1960s, with each pink betting tab worth £100. Today, that would be equivalent to £2,000 in 2021 prices, which is aprox. $2750 USD. Each time they play they're staking £200 (each) which is about $5,000 USD each hand, or $10,000 USD on the table. So yes, they're rolling quite deep compared to a $10 table!

I second that. James Bond is always confident, goes after what he wants despite any fear or other people telling him what to do. If anyone insults him, he remains calm/composed and his comebacks are clever, and witty. If a woman tries to turn him down, he just smirks and tells himself it's only a matter of time. He knows how to pick up and date women - even if they have a low interest level, eventually their interest level will become a 10/10. Overall, he knows what he is doing.

Not just him… the MI6 messenger [imagine, no pagers or cells; you actually had to send someone there to let them know they were wanted] who is not an agent, not nobility and not high society, yet he just strolls on in like he belongs there even though he’s not a member. He is part of his own elite that protects society whether “high” or not, and he shows that he knows it with that quiet confidence. The door-man too… not a prick or a Karen, he just politely asks if the guy is a member and politely lets him go about his business even though he’s not - because all are being civil and respectful. You don't need to be a special agent to have a primary objective in life. It can be as simple as pursuing a new career or seeking to finish a triathlon in X amount of time. The point is, an alpha male is always on a mission and women see that. When Bond got up from the table and walked away, she noticed it and knew he had other higher priorities in his life besides the game and chatting with her. Do the same. Work on improving yourself and enriching your life and get on a higher mission/purpose. Get in solid shape, get smart, get a better job/start a business, go on adventures, take care of your hygiene, dress well, and meet new people. Sean Connery was not a huge star then before Dr No he was in smaller parts and character actor roles and was noticed by producer Cubby Broccoli when Connery was in appearing in Darby O’Grill and the little people in 59 and Broccoli stated Connery would make a good Bond when the hunt was on for actors to play James Bond in 61. Broccoli was impressed by Connery after he saw the Darby film and had seen a fight scene with Connery and thought he would make a good James Bond but still had 6 other finalists screen test for the role before Connery got it beating out an 28 year unknown model Peter Anthony as Broccoli thought Anthony lacked the acting technique to land the part. It’s ironic as years later as unknown car salesman and model from Australia George Lazenby landed the role taking over from Sean Connery when only acting experiences he had were in tv commercials but lied to producers about his acting experience and landed the role based on his screen test and doing a fight scene breaking the nose of stuntman and actor he was doing screen test with.

@ The Cosmo Channel. Actually Sean Connery once stated that he didn't hate playing the role of James Bond as many people erroneously believe. He stated that, "It takes a certain craft to play a role like that, but it is simply natural for an actor to seek other roles". Mr. Connery you were quite simply the very best James Bond. You were and always will remain the template by which all other actors who have or will play that role will be measured. Thank you so much Sean for providing me with all the moments of pleasure watching you play Bond as well as the other roles you played in other films! You will be greatly missed but never forgotten by film fans! Now you can see once more Bernard Lee ("M") Desmond Llewellyn ("Q") and Lois Maxwell ( "Miss Moneypenny") and say to each other, "Wasn't it all fun"! R.I.P. Sean Connery.

@ EON 007. Sean Connery as James Bond introducing himself to Judith Gayson's Sylvia Trench character at the gambling table in "Dr. No" is certainly one of the most iconic scenes in movie history, but it is in no way the most important scene in movie history. To claim that is ridiculous! There realistically is no such thing as the most important theatrical or made-for-TV movie scene in history.

Are you saved friend? If you died tonight will you go to heaven or hell? God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh to take away the sin of the world. He gave up his own life to save yours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for your redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. This is the Gospel which means the Good News. Isaiah 45:22-23 KJV Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else. [23] I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. John 1:1-3,14 KJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] The same was in the beginning with God. [3] All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. [14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, Isaiah 44:6 KJV Thus saith the Lord the King of Israel, and his redeemer the Lord of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. Revelation 1:17-18 KJV And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: [18] I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. John 20:27-29 KJV Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. [28] And Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God. [29] Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.
