Desmond Llewelyn, who played Q in 17 Bond films, was born on this day in 1914. In this classic scene from GOLDFINGER (1964) Q introduces James Bond (Sean Connery) to his Aston Martin DB5 for the first time.

It's actually kind of fun to see how Q's changed over the years. I never did work out why a car with bulletproof windows needed a bulletproof screen that rose up behind the rear window.
@kavinskysmith40943 жыл бұрын
You actually see it in the film, namely when he runs the guard shack and the grandma comes out with the MP40, she machine guns the front window and damages it pretty badly, and naturally as your not going to be driving out of the rear when your driving forward, or you need to back up without giving them a clear shot, it saves the rear window and prevents it from being badly damaged or broken as you do so like it was in that scene. granted your statement is an understandable one given the poor choice of words there, as it really should have been bullet resistant, not bullet proof in the script, as back then the way they did bullet proofing was basically just to put some really thick multi layered glass and then fill the car body with concrete, which under sustained fire like that probably isnt really that accurate to describe as bullet proof either. but given guy hamilton's son was the one who came up with a good portion of the gadgets, including the very unsafe and very inaccurate to use machine guns, I think its best not to really think about it too hard lol

I saw one of the Goldfinger Aston Martins at the '64-'65 World's Fair in Flushing, NY. It was beautiful! They had the bulletproof screen up and showed us how the machine guns extended and retracted and how the number plates flipped. For all the other gadgets (such as the tire slashers), the sexy woman who was demonstrating the car told us they couldn't show them since the gadgets needed a certain amount of hydraulic pressure to operate and the ejector seat needed a 40 foot clearance which would have hit the roof of the building. Of course all that was BS but we all loved it anyway.

You must have visited the World's Fair with your parents because in the school trips the teachers did not take us to see it. They said "It's not educational enough. They ruined our trip to the World's Fair since that was the exhibit we most wanted to see. We really could care less about the other exhibits!!!! We were 10 years old. Lol!!!!

@@BingCherry11 Yes. My Uncle Dave took me. I was about 10 at the time. Uncle Dave looked at the girl. I looked at the car! It was at a Monorail terminal and roped off so we couldn't touch it. Another great memory from the fair was seeing Colonel Ked use a Bell jet pack (the same kind used in Thunderball) to fly over the Unisphere!

Near to me there is a nursing home that was the birth place of Desmond. By the front door there is a small unofficial plaque that says he was born there. Think it's nice that someone took the trouble to proudly remember him. I always look for it when I visit due to my profession.

The Aston inspired me in my 2nd yr college engineering class to fabricate a double license plate (three was too difficult) as a final project using sheet metal, springs, and a bicycle cable feeding to a knob under the dashboard. The fake plate would hinge under the bumper and flip up over the real plate. I planned to use it to bypass parking meters, collect all the tickets I wanted and just keep swapping the fake numbered plate. I was shocked when my two professors thought it was a marvelous idea.

A few years ago I was lucky enough to race a DB5 around Mallory Park for a few laps as part of a track day. Exiting Gerard's my instructor mumbled something about "outside" - so naturally I quickly pulled to the outside of the bend. Turns out that what he actually said was "mind the D-Type on the outside" - in reference to the Jaguar D-Type that was overtaking 100mph faster around the outside of the bend. My first introduction to "accelerated learning".

The last thing a transmitter needs is a magnet, transmitters used to encased in copper in those days and only the antenna transmit , as to the small one it has a very limited range like 200 feet because of the size of the battery, but since it's a James Bond film, they are permitted to bend the rules.

Yes, when this 1st came out in the cinema in 1964 it was almost too much to take in, to be honest, as we'd never seen anything like it before and we didn't know what was coming next until it happened on screen, and after it was all over at the end of the film it was like having just come off the biggest roller coaster 🎢 ride you'd ever been on...🤯🤯 Wow, what a film 🎥 THAT WAS.. !!!

A few years ago, there was a series of classic films shown at cinemas, they chose Goldfinger as the "thriller" in the series. It's so much better than on tv/dvd to see it in the cinema, it's the sound in a large auditorium rather than just the visuals although you can't beat that either. Unfortunately we are being mostly denied of the cinematic experience in the pandemic😷
@visionist72 жыл бұрын
Last night I saw No Time To Die at the cinema in Italy, in English. Sadly the sound was turned down way too low for my tastes. Nothing boomed in that cinema. Way too quiet. Whereas when I watched Craig's four films leading up to NTTD, I had my amp on THX Reference level and it is absolutely deafening. Thunderous audio. I know which I prefer!
