Stam Fine spools up Dr No, the inaugural James Bond adventure on the big screen where agent 007 goes to Jamaica for a work trip. Sean Connery's star-making turn as the suave secret agent kicked of a phenomenon that continues to this day: people reviewing Bond films.

I've grown to really love the first two Bond movies. I especially like how upon entering hotel rooms, he immediately scopes the whole place out, looks for bugs, and sets it up so he knows if someone searches the place later.

Major Boothroyd, the Armourer, was named after Geoffrey Boothroyd, a firearms expert who was a fan of the books, but wrote a letter taking Fleming to task for having Bond carry a .25 cal Beretta, which Boothroyd called "A lady's gun." He recommended several weapons, particularly the Smith & Wesson Centennial Airweight, a revolver, with no exposed hammer. It was designed for bodyguards and police, to draw easily from a holster. He also recommended the Berns & Martin holster, which held the weapon upside down, for a fast draw and aim. Among the weapons he recommended was the Walther PPK. Fleming liked the sound of it best and chose it and included the holster, oblivious to the fact that the holster was specifically designed for revolvers, as it gripped around the cylinder. A PPK would fall out. Fleming also got mixed up and had the Centennial issued for long range work, but it is a .38 cal. Boothroyd had actually recommended a Colt .45 or other heavier caliber. Fleming had no knowledge of firearms, as his wartime experience had all been in administrative duties in Naval Intelligence and not fieldwork.

My dad thought he was James Bond, on his first date with my mum he had a replica Walther PPK in his dinner suit jacket pocket! What a bellend! Great review btw!

Connery once said "I wouldn't piss on Broccoli or Saltzman if they were on fire."

He hated Saltzman more than Broccoli. Any time Sean saw Harry on set when he was in the middle of a take, he would stop performing.

one thing you gotta say about the choice of Connery as Bond: he was an actual badass street tough in his youth in Scotland, therefore making him pretty much the only Bond actor who could actually kick ass in real life...despite the mostly lame fight choreography, it does show through at times

This movie has three of the most iconic Bond scenes: The scene where he presents himself as "Bond, James Bond" - cue Bond music. The scene where he kills the Professor (that's a S&W and you've had your six). And the death scene of Dr. No where he tries to claw his way out of the boiling cooling liquid but his metal hands cannot grasp onto the metal support structure of the elevator. His hazard suit probably prolonged his agony. And let's not forget Ursula Andress. The movie looks cheap in places but it's simply impossible to forget.

Man, who still remembers the high cost of Letraset. (Liked the Connery accent BTW, definite laugh out loud calling his mother.)

Sean Connery was THE James Bond. George Lazenby...wasn't. I think Sean Connery placed in a Mr.Universe contest back in the day also. Btw, your voice overs for Bond is HILARIOUS. Great review!!!! The "bat" he shat...was it the flying mammal or a baseball bat?🤣

U forgot to mention the ultra-famous Jack Lord who stared in Hawaii 5-0 for many yrs. Trivia: Connery was scared of spiders; therefore they used glass the separate them & the spider on the arm was Connery's stunt man

You left out this info bits. JFk was reading one of the novel. And told the press how great it was. It really took off after that.

Sort of. He was interviewed and asked his favorite books and he mentioned From Russia With Love. They had been hits in the UK, but middling in the US, despite the Climax episode, adapting Casino Royale. After JFK mentioned it, sales took off and the previous books were re-issued and the others given a bigger push.

you do some fantastic reviews. always liked Dr No, just seemed to have that pioneering spy action atmosphere in the right amount, and just so period it's tastes and look. curiously in 1961 there was a French release: spies, action, exotic locations (Istanbul), guns, chases, humour, obvious cliched baddies, an end twist just to tie up the story, and an adventurer detectivey hero possibly even more well known than James Bond. This was the live action feature film Tintin and the Golden Fleece, with a rather exceptional actor (a school teacher!) playing Tintin, with some of the best action sequences of any actor I've seen, he really got involved in the part. it's easy to scoff, very wooden as you'd expect, but surprisingly rewarding and in a completely different league from Peter Jackson's collection of Herge awfulness. It's like either the junior version of James Bond. or maybe James Bond is just an adult version of Tintin.

they all borrow from each other in some way, everything's been influenced by something. Sometimes the source of inspiration is more obvious than others. North By Northwest has often been cited as a source of inspiration for the early Bonds, but that's one of many films that would put ideas into the heads of the Bond film-makers.

The only scene in the film that exists in the real world is Bond being told what's what by M in his office and Bond flirting with Moneypenny, his only interaction with a woman where there is a feeling of genuine, mutual, endearing, affection. (Because she's "a good girl" it would have been ultra hot if....) So I say heave-ho to the rest of the film and those that followed.

Unpopular opinion: I'd recommend you stop the Connery impressions. Regardless of anything else, Connery did not have a lisp during his 60's Bond years; that didn't develop until much later.
