Dr. Ph. Martin's Radiant -vs- Hydrus LIQUID Watercolors

Liquid watercolors are so much fun to use, but which one to choose? In this video I'll explain the differences between Hydrus Fine Art and Radiant Concentrated Watercolors so you can choose which one is better for you. I'll also paint a simple image twice using each one so you can see the differences. Spoiler alert: I love them both.

Uggghh!!!!! I’m torn... I love the super bright of the Radiant but the lightfast of Hydrus! You’re one of my favorites on Skillshare! Thanks for sharing your talent with us!

Paint made with dyes are always more vibrant but that vibrance is short lived as they are fugitive.

I also personally prefer Radiant. If you spray you art with several coats of Golden brand spray Varnish (UV resistant) it will last just fine. I have paintings hanging over 10 years old that havent faded or discolored at all.

@@hodlzombie Thank you for this comment! I also thought the radiant isn't just more vibrant but layers much better than the Hydrus. Was thinking of if I could seal with something so will try your recommendation!

@@jiminycricket6428 No problem, I do 5 to 8 coats depending on the piece letting it dry 20 minutes between each coat

I love using the hydrus for layering on top of the Radiance.... especially white hydrus brush strokes over a colour.... so pretty! Thanks so much for the video. Just what I was looking for :O)

Thanks for this excellent demo. I use porcelain mixing palettes; do these stain them? Or does it wash off completely like normal watercolor painting?

Sorry for the very late reply. If I wash them immediately after using them, they haven’t stained mine. If you leave the paint sitting there for days, it might.

Thank you for this video comparison. I’ve been contemplating which on to get between these two and this video helped with my final decision. My question for you is actually about the wooden box container where you store all of your watercolours at the start of the video. I’ve been looking for a good storage container for my Dr. PH Martins and I quite like the one shown in your video. If you don’t mind me asking, where did you purchase it?

Could you help me? I have the full set of Dr. Martins Hydrus. I am finding them impossible to run through an airbrush without getting tip dry. How can I mitigate this issue?

Hi Leslie, I have never used an airbrush in my life but diluting the paint with distilled water might help. I also find that the RADIANTS are way thinner than the HYDRUS, but also the colours are very fugitive. Make sure you shake the HYDRUS really well too because they tend to settle. Sorry that I can’t be of more help.

I found the Hydrus to dry chalky and flat, almost like a gouache. Do the Radiants dry more luminous, more like a high quality watercolor?

They do seem more matte and opaque if you use them too thick, but I find that if I use them very watery they dry like watercolor. That said, the Radiants do dry extra luminous and they are very transparent even when using many layers and non watered down paint. They are the dream! If only you could use them for original paintings that could be displayed! But some of the colors (especially the pinks fade too fast).
