My first experience with Dr. Martins radiant W C was 1952 and That painting is as bright as ever and has been in the light off and on... So I think most watercolors and Gouache may fade somewhat if hung in bright light, we humans fade too after a lifetime in the light...

@@elizabethannwarner1513 you could possibly reconstitute the dry bottles by adding distilled water to them (and then stirring).

Just be aware the hydrus don’t rewet well if they have been out for a while. Some of the pigments become “flakey” for want of a better word, so it is best to just put a drop or two out of the colour you need. They rewet perfectly fine while painting and maybe for a few days after but after a week or so, they become more difficult.

Kyomii yes- good point! I have also noticed that some colours re wet better than others so it's definitely a good idea to just put a small amount out at a time.

I am curious if adding Winsor & Newton Iridescent Medium to the Hydrus watercolours, especially the deeper colours like Ultramarine, Phthalo Green or Alizarin Crimsom would give you iridescent non-pastel colours, which for the most part are the only iridescents that are available on the market as of now. Thanks for a great comparison tutorial! As I sell my art, the fact that the Ecoline liquid watercolours are not lightfast immediately took those out of the running, but I greatly appreciate the time you put into a very thorough comparison and review of their qualities!

Thank you for this video 👍 I'm retiring after 30 years as a Registered Nurse at the end of this month. Part of my retirement presents from my colleagues will be some Ecoline brush pens. I'm sooo looking forward to using them! Over my lifetime I've only ever drawn with graphite pencils and, more latterly, coloured pencils. But, I tried out the Ecoline brush pens in my local art supplies shop, Lateral Art in Morpeth, Northumberland, and was instantly hooked!

Hi there, I have to say the more I watch videos of The Ecoline inks, the more I'm tempted to buy them. I love working in inks, but I much prefer bottled inks as apposed to brush pens, but that's only because it's what I'm used to. About 2 years ago, I bought the Dr Ph Martins Hydras 15ml bottles, but I was really disappointed, despite shaking the bottles before use, after a while the colours just seem to deteriorate into a flaky powder is the only way I can describe it. So against my better judgement I ordered the Dr Ph Martins Bombay Inks, and to my surprise and despair these let me down as well!! The inks turned into a thick paste and I had to take the pipette out as they were clogged up with a thick inky goo and I had to stir the ink using a cocktail stick. These inks were a considered purchase as they weren't cheap, so I wasn't a very happy chappy. I'm hoping I'll fare better with these, they seem to be of a different consistency. What I think I'll do is order 2 bottles just to see how they keep over time, and if they remain the same then I shall buy the entire set...SO FINGERS CROSSED.....Maybe 3rd time lucky!!!
@SarahNewburyArt
@SarahNewburyArt 3 жыл бұрын
Hi! It's a real shame as none of these supplies are cheap- I think the consistency depends a lot on the different pigments with the Hydrus as some of the colours are better than others. Still not ideal though. I haven't had any consistency issues with the Ecoline as they are dye based- so maybe it's worth giving a few of those a go. I have also been wanting to try the Dr Ph Martins radiance line too but they are also very expensive so I'm going to wait and see if they go on offer! 😊

@@SarahNewburyArt Hi there, thankyou for your reply. Yes I agree, some of the Dr Ph Bombay Inks are fine, but others haven't fared so well, with the amount of money I spent, I could have wept. I did buy one ecoline bottle just to see how it was, and I was really pleased. The ink was very vibrant and left standing, the consistency is just as runny as it was the day I received it, no need to shake the bottle. So YES I will be buying the sets as well as loose stock, to have as many colours as I need, although looking at the colour chart I don't need to buy every single one, but I will buy the majority of them. I'm not sure if this makes any difference but I do own some of the brilliant sennelier acrylic inks, which I have had for at least 2 years, and not one of them has ever given me any problems, they flow just as freely now as the day I got them. I only mention this as about a week ago I discovered that there is a line of acrylic inks that Dr Ph Martins have, spectralite I believe they are called. Maybe it's something they add in the acrylic solution that stops them from going sticky and muddy. But then I had to tell myself NO...this is getting insane, at this rate I'd have become an expert on every single make of ink there is on the market and become bankrupt in the process!!

Hi! Thank you for such a lovely comment! In answer to your question re lightfastness, I imagine that if you mix one lightfast watercolour with one non lightfast one, the overall lightfasness would be adversely affected but I'm not completely sure- It's a bit tricky to predict and lightfast levels may also vary depending on the colours used and the concentrations of each used as well. Sorry I can't be more specific! 😊🎨

The pigments that are lightfast will not lose saturation while the ones that aren't will. Talens dyes aren't that bad when it comes to lightfastness.

Hi Patricia! I had a similar issues with some of my Dr Ph Martins inks. I think its because they are pigment based and the pigment has a tendancy to separate out -compared to the Ecoline inks which are dye based and more stable. 😊

You are so kind to answer questions from viewers and so I have one: could the echo line be used for Comic book-style coloring? Specifically, if you have a drawing done in black India ink - some of your black ink is solid lines for outlines of objects, some of it is solid black to indicate shadows , and some of it is feathering to give different degrees of shad ing effects - could you then do this: make a copy of your ink drawing (so you don't ruin the original) on some kind of paper, and then drop in with these colors but hopefully the colors would only color the white spaces and leave all the blacks showing - the solid blacks and the feathered blacks? Thanks so much for being helpful to artists- as I'm sure you know the only way to find out about any of this stuff is to buy it and some of us aren't in a position to buy a lot of things that aren't going to work for what we need! Thanks again and take care ❤️

Hi there! I am so sorry it has taken me so long to reply to your question! I think the Ecoline would be very good for comic book style colouring as they are dye based and transparent- more like ink than watercolour. More opaque pigment based watercolours could cover over and dull some of the black ink outlines. I hope this helps and sorry again for the delay in replying! Take care 😊

You are so welcome! I think, as you say, there are UV sprays out there that will protect you're artwork from fading over time but sadly I don't have any personal experience with them and I've heard some of them can change the colours of your painting. I always recommend that you hang any paintings out of direct sunlight, even if they are created with lightfast art supplies but if you wanted to guarantee the longevity of your original piece, you could always frame a print of it instead? Sorry I couldn't be more helpful. 😊

Really, these are two different animals. The Hydrus are actual watercolours - maybe not quite DSmith/Wins&Newt./Sennelier quality; but they are indisputably watercolours. The Ecos are inks, formulated to mimic watercolour. But without pigments, you can't expect them to behave - or endure on a page - the way real watercolours will. I'm not saying you can't have a lot of fun with them. But be aware of their intrinsic nature, and then you can choose according to your needs.

Ecoline (Talens) was used in the 60's untill maybe the 90's by a lot of comic book and cartoon artists in the Netherlands and Belgium to color their work. Also gouache was very in use back then. The comic "Tom Poes" was much colored with ecoline. I think Dick Matena that did Tom Poes or Bommel used it and stil is. So it wasn't ment to keep them for eternity. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aremmM6Up97bj2w.html in the first 30 sec of the clip you see them using it. The old bottles didn't had the pipet back then.

This is a neat video, but it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. Dr. Ph Martin's Radiant (also dye based) would be better to put up against the Ecoline instead of putting the Hydrus (pigment based) up against them. Unless, of course, the objective is to show the difference between dye-based watercolors and pigment-based ones. I find they're quite different.
@joyfulldj
@joyfulldj 6 жыл бұрын
Ecoline is NOT a Liquid watercolor. It is a liquid ink where as the ph martin's is an actual liquid watercolor and using the same pigments as watercolor. Ecoline is great to play with but not mutch of a comparison, by all means that is no offence to Talens, they state the same on their website, that it is in fact an INK. If you are aiming for lightfast the Hydrus is a better option. Talens however can be compared to a radiant from ph martin as the radiant from ph martin is also a liquid, but it is diebased. Still not the same as a liquid ink, but comparing wise a bit more fair match ;) don't let that stop you from using ecoline though, the colors are very pretty and awesome stuff for in journaling and card making; i own twelve of them, but just pointingout this, may prevent from disapointment when you do sell your art.
@joyfulldj
@joyfulldj 6 жыл бұрын
PS: Footnote; as with any liquid ink most are not light fast, though talens did put in a good effort on their website in a pdf printable, however the version I know is in dutch, I do not know if ecoline has a lightfast rating card in english, I apologise for that. Again, the only liquids that I know myself to be lightfast are the winsor and newton watercolor markers and the ph martin Hydrus watercolors. The radiants are not lightfast so be careful in reading the labels there when you buy those. I have both ecoline zig and tombows and neither of the last three are lightfast. I think the whole concept of lightfast is very much over hyped when you are not selling or showing your work.

Hi Thank you for your comment and for sharing so much information! A couple of people have commented similar re the ecoline being dye based inks as opposed to watercolour so this is something that I have learned that I wasn't aware of when first making this video! You're right about the radiant line from Dr. Ph Martin too- they would be more comparable but I don't have any of those yet and wasn't aware of them until after making this video. It's so nice to get information from viewers like yourself, as it can be hard to find on the various websites- especially when they aren't in English! So far as lightfastness goes, I think the Dr Ph Martins Bombay inks are lightfast, like their Hydrus watercolor, but I agree that having the right paper really makes a difference to the quality of your painting, whichever ink or watercolour you decide to use. Thanks again! 😊

You are very welcome, Glad that you didn't take any offence in it, I know I can be very blunt, that is never to hurt anyone, only to prevent disapointment; because a liquid ink in an official watercolor contest for example is usually a nono. Would be a shame when you put so many hours in an art piece,right :) Confusion is easily made, the botles look alike but the price tag is usually a giveaway when a red flag should popup :P I have not seen an archival liquid ink yet, but if anyone should know that one it should be The Frugal Crafter aka lindsay weirich. I always confuse archival ink with being lightfast but I very much doubt that they are the same :)
