In this interview, Dr. Ramani explains how to spot the signs of a mentally healthy workplace.
Want to ask Dr. Ramani your question directly? You can HERE: bit.ly/2Q4JZZR
“People at work are the ones who see you day in and day out. So they will notice a change. And when [a manager] takes notice, the most humane thing that manager can do is care for that employee. People desperately want to be seen and heard and understood. And sometimes all it takes is that one kind voice that reaches in and asks if you’re okay.” - Dr. Ramani Durvasula
When it comes to your mental health, your workplace plays a critical role.
1 in 4 people are living with a mental health condition. Yet more than half of employees with depression, anxiety, or another mental health condition believe their job would be at risk if they opened up to their employer for mental health support.
This is a problem considering we spend over 50% of our waking hours - that’s one-third of our lives - at work.
Helping employees become more productive starts with paying attention to their mental wellbeing and ability to perform.
In this video interview, licensed psychologist and therapist Dr. Ramani Durvasula and MedCircle host Kyle Kittleson discuss key strategies for how to spot the signs of a mentally healthy workplace vs. a mentally "unhealthy" workplace. She explains how companies can fight the stigma of mental health and best support people with depression, anxiety disorder, panic attacks,

I am over 50, and have very, very rarely had a non-toxic workplace and/or manager, of course more from smaller companies than from multinational, multi billion dollar ones. Nearly every workplace makes me feel like a beat dog. It is no wonder that I have struggled with depression and anxiety since I can remember. I wish we lived in a world that followed Dr. Ramani’s advice.

Jeanie, that sounds awful and makes so much sense as to your struggles with depression and anxiety (of course, you did!). The amount of stress in toxic environments can literally kill you (2.5 times more likely). I'm sorry you went through that. I know that's hard. Here's a Forbes article on the link between bad bosses and shortened lifespans: www.forbes.com/sites/kevinkruse/2016/12/19/study-finds-bad-boss-shortens-your-lifespan-5-questions-to-predict-it/#28ad8861522e

Jeanie DiLeonardo I feel absolute trust shouldn’t be overemphasized in a relationship, smartness is also very important. There’s a popular saying that “don’t trust too much because that too much might hurt you so much”. A Narcissist shouldn’t be trusted, they’re toxic!. My greatest disappointment was discovering my wife cheating on me through the help of Cyberhackingsage who helped cloned her cellphone and i was able to read all her messages and uncover my wife’s infidelity without having to touch her phone. All i did was share my wife’s number with Cyberhackingsage and i got access to her Facebook, WhatsApp and text messages both deleted and incoming ones with a link on my phone. Thanks to Cyberhackingsage, now i have enough evidence for my divorce. You can contact him ( cyberhackingsage@gmail )Or Text/Call and WhatsApp him on +15713758467. Thank me later.

Me to! I left a company due to how far the commute was and I regret it sooo much. I ended up at a place that was only a 6 min drive and wow what a HUGE MISTAKE. A narcissistic owner pretending to care about her employers. So sad. I quit today. Management contacting me but she has no right to hear what I have to say I’m not giving them anything anymore because I know I’m my heart that I was and still am a good employee.

I'm a career and life coach and a survivor of NPD abuse. I'd estimate that 70% of my clients reach out to me because they are in a toxic workplace. I do a lot of work with toxic workforce trauma recovery. It is really important, if you come from a toxic and abusive family of origin, to be very careful about accepting a position where the company claims to be "a family." And if you have a healthy family of origin, also be careful! Insecure leaders are absolutely toxic. Definitely ask questions about what "being a family" means to them. Be very aware of the environment when you are in the interview. Watch body language. Do people seem comfortable with one another? Do you hear laughter or sense tension? Great video, as usual! Love this channel.

Polite correction...insecure PEOPLE are highly toxic. It is not requisite that someone be in a position of leadership in order to be toxic. Some direct reports can be equally toxic and even treacherous when they are seeking to climb that ladder of success.

I sensed a lot of tension between two managers. Co workers were awesome though! The owner a nightmare. I quit because of her. I was getting a lot of hate in my heart and I don’t want that in my life. I just saw a video of her and her business and noticed just how insecure she was and still is. I ignored her for a reason and I could never figure out why I felt so uncomfortable around her until finally she snapped at me for something extremely stupid then she went into rage mode and cried to management in front of me. I was in tears. When I went back to clean she got on her bike and road it around the warehouse and then yelled at my favorite co worker. He told me that she would yell at him for being too slow. 🙄 so I’m left depressed and not talking to any of my family members or boyfriend because I’m just so drained. But yes I quit today

I worked for a law firm where they would pile on the work regardless of how overwhelmed you were. In fact, they would give you more and more work every week. We literally had paralegals crying in the bathroom, consoling each other in the parking lot, going into their supervisor’s office crying and telling them they were on the verge of a mental breakdown, and nothing was ever done. They would view you as a weak link and put you on probation and eventually fire the person. They had a high turn over needless to say. The place was a Sh*t Show!

I know two business owners that opened a beautifully blissful and fabulously delicious cafe in 1981 (38 years ago). The Oak Table Cafe is BY FAR the BEST place to eat on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. They still employ wonderful people that have been with them since the beginning; I have literally watched their staff grow old in their cafe. They love and nurture their staff as family-and have become THE BEST there is as a business in my book! The world has traded money for love and thus has bred a global epidemic of cold-hearted narcissists! What a self-centered, horrifying nightmare! There is no happiness apart from love.

The doctor had really valuable advice. I would like to say though that in the past few years corporate jobs see such high attrition rates and people move so fast between employers that it’s impossible to make this happen. Long gone are times where you worked for the same organization for a lifetime, it was part of your life, your colleagues were your friends and stood by you through thick and thin! I envy my dads generation for this social support that their workplace afforded them.

I’m so irritated with the hypocrisy of mental health agencies where I live who are “trauma informed” but yet are not actively cultivating that type of culture in the workplace. I don’t understand it. This video makes so much sense and you would think that a mental health agency would be the prime example... i pray that this is just in the area I live in. 😔 it’s hard wanting to leave a job you are good at and effects so many people positively.

How do you overcome the fear of being labeled & perceived as not good enough for the job, or the kind of recommendations they'll give you if you're open & vulnerable?
@le_th_
@le_th_ 4 жыл бұрын
Sadly, I've met very few people in life with whom you can be truly open and vulnerable without them throwing it back in your face later. I'm not just talking about at work, I even mean amongst peers, so-called friends (who haven't yet shown you they are really frenemies), family members. Be cautious with how "open" you are, especially to HR. I've found it better to take a leave of absence with no explanation other than saying that are taking time off. You do NOT owe them an explanation. Keep your skills sharp and current. Consider joining a network of female professionals (and be very mindful of what you reveal about yourself there, as well) with whom you may be able to network. Also, be extremely careful about complaining about previous workplace toxicity when you interview for another corporation, as they may consider you a liability. Consider starting your own business if you truly want to be in a healthy work environment. I'm dead serious. I wish someone had given me this advice in my 20s or even my 30s.

I had a manager (alongside the HR person) tell me that I wasn't doing enough by calling me into the office, which made me feel like I was being punished for something I had no idea I was being judged on. Particularly since it was a graveyard team of 2 people to stock the entire store. There was no negotiation or being heard, just "you are a malfunctioning cog."

Funny you brought up a dental office as I work in one and it is so toxic... this past year I developed a fragrance allergy where my lungs close up, i start to sweat perfusely, my heart races, panic washes over me bc I am scared of lungs closing up or lungs are closing up, my face and body goes red, i may start to stutter... I have communicated this issue to my employer and coworkers many times... the dentist I work actually has seen me have a reaction to patients wearing fragrances... under the law it is my employers responsibility to uphold the health and safety of the workplace. My health issue falls under a disability which requires him to accommodate that by informing patients that we've transitioned to a fragrance free office. When I had initially told him about this he did nothing. When I sent him a link to Ontario health and safety website stating his duties he only printed off sign and posted it in waiting room, nothing more. I saw the sign and realized no one is going to really bother reading it so I created a poster myself using canva with color and priniting it at a printing store and laminating it with my own money. I replaced the black and white one he posted with mine but it has not done anything as patients are not being informed verbally. My cowrker who behaves like the boss says by law we can not tell ppl not to wear fragrance as it infringes on their rights. I said what about my right and need to breathe. She says what do you expect ppl not to bath because of you. what else do you want us to do for you, we are not going to turn the office upside down for you. Complete lack of empathy.... we are talking about my breathing.. its not that I have an issue with ppls wanting to wear it but it is making me sick and interfering with me being able to do my job and feel safe and protected. We had a staff meeting where I was once again reminded that they are not going to inform pateints as they don't want to offend them aka lose patients possibly meaning money. So the issue is placing profit above my health. The next day doctor told me he noticed cowrker attacking me but says I am looking too deeply into it and suggested I start drinking alcohol. I have this on audio, both the meeting and him saying to drink. It has def affected my mental health in a very negative way where I feel less than and hopeless. I do not trust that when I stand up for myself things will happen.. I do not trust words anymore. They tell me they value me but clearly that is a lie... the words and actions are incongruent. Most workplaces do not give a shit about their employees mental health.. I have never worked anywhere where ppl's feelings and mental health were respected and nurtured in my many years of working.

Dr Ramini, is there a book about Narcissism written for the narcissist? Something that is geared towards helping them understand the disorder, something written in a sympathetic tone which might make it easier for them to accept that diagnosis? I am very certain my mother has NPD, not just "is a narcissist." She has had relationship problems and work problems all her life and currently struggles with homelessness. I tried to let her stay with me, but she really dislikes me, ( I am the scapegoat child) and it did not work at all. No matter how terribly she has treated me, she is my mother, and I care about her. Her narcissism causes her pain too, not just those around her. She has seen Psychologists her entire adult life, and because she tells a victim story no one has diagnosed her correctly and treated her. (She has a very high IQ and she very much so has the victim role perfected.) I know you say Narcissists are not willing to change, but her life has gone so far down the drain I think she would, but I think she would recoil at being painted as a victimizer, because she so identifies as the victim. Any suggestions for a book I could send her would be very welcomed.

I believe the toxic workplace starts at the top & trickles down to mgt. The people at the top are disconnected w/ everyone below them. Then, in mgt., many lack communication skill sets & are being pressured by upper mgt. & shareholders to sell at all costs & do whatever you have to as we will back you, creating extremely toxic environments. Instead of actually communicating w/us, Corp. launches these silly culture programs that don't do a thing. The beat downs will continue until morale improves.

How to deal with a narrasstic stalker who tries to involve himself in your everyday life without you seeing them in the vicinity? I used to work with this guy years ago and he goes out of his way to get men out of my life that he feels threatening to him. I have noticed that he's got several friends who have the same problems as he does.... I have seen one of his female friends stalk her boyfriend and me for her friend who is the one who's stalking me....

To many managers who go directly into said position without paying their dues by working their way up the ladder. To many young ignorant managers who believe that they must rule with an iron fist to be respected but this has the opposite effect. No empathy, no support, no understanding, no team work. My manager is an absolute idiot and tyrant so I'm speaking from experience. I hate working and now do the minimal and just punch in and out. No going the extra mile anymore especially when it's not appreciated! 😡

Most adds for jobs. " Busy office, Fast paced environment, lots of multitasking, flexibility for overtime hours, oh ya and attention to detail" all with NO support, NO feedback, NO recognition, NO appreciation. And why is burn out so prevalent in the workplace? WTF, most work places are looking for robots!!!😠😡🤬

I'm honesty very concerned for everyone who knows Kyle. Bc he displays basically all the signs of being a covert narcissist.

Patrick Wallace I don’t know. She likes Kyle very much and she’s said she shuts down when she encourages narcissists.
