After Dr Charles shooting Dr Reese's paranoia has piled up to a point that she needs to protect herself at work, but eventually this goes a step too far for an unsuspecting patient.
Season 3 Episode 6 "Ties That Bind"
Dr. Robin Charles is caught shoplifting in Connor's father's department store. Dr. Choi deals with a frustrated patient with no medical explanation for his condition and asks Dr. Reese for her help. However, her paranoia of unsafe work conditions gets the better of her when she pepper sprays a patient, leading to Dr. Reese getting suspended until further notice. Maggie complains to Goodwin about the shortage of nurses in the ED, but then comes up with a plan to boost hospital revenues. Dr. Halstead tends to a patient who is making drastic sacrifices to get pregnant. While treating an elderly mother, Dr. Manning treats the daughter as well for appendicitis, but is confused when she claims to have already had her appendix out. Further tests show that the appendix procedure in her teens was actually to tie her fallopian tubes, a secret her mother kept from her for all these years. Connor returns home, but then seeks out Dr. Daniel Charles to tell him that Robin has gone away.

I have anxiety too, and I know people are saying that she was being in self-defense, but she only said back off once and he couldn’t hear her because he was spiralling out of control what she should’ve done is yelled for security and yelled for somebody else to come help that’s what any other doctor would’ve done the second he started acting agitated she should’ve yelled security I need help in here, but she didn’t she chose to use a weapon on him, and yes mace or bear spray or pepper spray or whatever it was that she was using is considered a weapon, she had the right to defend yourself but in all fairness that guy didn’t even lay a hand on her yes he was making her feel incredibly uncomfortable and yes she was telling him to back off but he was also spiralling with his own anxiety that they thought that he was crazy, he misunderstood why they were sending in a psychologist, all in all I think Dr. Reese had her reasons to be paranoid and I think she had her reasons to do what she did at the same time though I can understand if she has to deal with any consequences for his actions, the guy on the other hand should be punished you should be the one who was told that he was out of line, it’s not like he was on drugs or drunk he was literally a normal guy who just freaked out

Also, in north america most health care professionals have little to no protection against patiant violance, the pationt cant be held accountable becuase it is either physically involentary or they have a mental deciese that is causeing them to be violent. So the owners of hospitals will often shove the docs and nurses under the bus to spear them money and time since they are paid to care for the patiance no matter how they treat them in return. Most nurses dont stay in the field past 40 for the reason, the number of medical issues that build up from untreated injuries or outright debilitation means that they cant work anymore even if they want to.

This reminds me of working in a nursing home where we had challenging behaviour patients. They would come right up into your face with threatening remarks and we were not allowed to do anything. I was pushed up against a wall and had a fist in my face but I was not allowed to do anything. I was punched hundreds of times, kicked, spat at, scratched and still we weren't allowed to do anything. We weren't even allowed to restrain the patient in self defence as it could've landed us in court. When you're working as a healthcare professional there aren't nearly enough regulations protecting us from our patients.

There absolutely is he was yelling at her not indicating he was going to be violent. There was a hallway full of people she could have called to diffuse the situation not 10 feet away and she was carrying a weapon without cause. @@tpwkbeth. this stuff has happened and has gone down as self defence. though, when it happened IRL where the guy tried to sue the doctor after it was shown that the doctor told the patient to back away several times(it was caught on cctv) in doing so any proceeding of the patient continueing to go towards doctor is seen as an act of aggression and pepper spray is seen as a "in means" self defence

People don’t realise, a traumatic event can cause this. After she told him to back off he refused she said again back off he refused. Maybe she had a violent childhood and felt the need to do that. It could easily have been a worry he would hit her.

Dr.Charles honestly has such a calming presence and he is such a good guy to have a little Crisis, Dr. Reese is very lucky that he was there to help her throughout this event. Every time I’ve seen him he’s always just so calm and seems to know what he’s doing seems so sure of himself but not in a way that makes him full of himself is very attentive to the people he’s listening to and he always makes them feel heard, he is literally the blueprint example of what a psychiatrist should be not trying to explain their feelings for himself but he’s letting people explain their own feelings he’s not trying to sugarcoat the feelings and trying to make people stop thinking about them and distracted with other things he is helping those people processes feelings away that’s a wait a psychiatrist should act I definitely don’t have any in my town that are this good😢❤
