5:10 I somewhat agree with him on this. A number of the releases from Zill’s taste delicious but for the average homeowner the productivity is rather low for a lot of these cultivars, outside of ideal growing conditions (production is usually fine close to the ocean or in low humidity, low disease pressure areas that get enough chill hours/drought stress). A lot of folks complain about the low productivity and poor disease tolerance of a substantial number of Gary Zill’s varieties (coconut cream, sugarloaf, lemon zest, harvest moon, pina colada, pineapple pleasure, etc). So while it is amazing what has come from his breeding program, further selection needs to be made in future generations to improve upon these attributes which are lacking. That’s not to say all of the new Zill varieties are problematic, there are some fantastic ones that are all around good trees: M4 and Orange Sherbet are two that come to mind. Interestingly, some of the selections from Walter Zill (Gary’s brother) are very, very good all around mangoes. For example, Pickering and Honey Kiss are both dwarf, highly productive, very disease resistant, quite delicious and have good color that makes it easy to determine ripeness. Just my 2 cents, hopefully no one takes this too serious lol.
