Dr. Richard Davidson (Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, Founder & Director of the Center for Healthy Minds) shows us what it truly means to be well in your emotional self by harnessing our trauma mechanisms into well-being! He breaks down the scientific data he’s gathered on long-term meditators (including monks!) to show the efficacy of meditation, the parts of the brain most affected by meditation, and what all of that means for how we self-regulate and cope with trauma. Dr. Davidson explains how meditation can help parenting, how our expectations and narratives influence our perception of the world, and what our "emotional fingerprints" are. He and Mayim discuss how his framework of awareness, connection, insight, and purpose lead us to understand the science of well-being, the notion that love and kindness are innate and hate is learned, and the importance of teaching forms of meditation to our kids.

I’m so thankful for you Mayim I have ADHA and I’m 54 and I really didn’t know it until I was in my late 20s? I was labeled as a poor student but I always passed and I was involved with cheerleading and many clubs in high school. My mom said I was always busy and burned the candle at both ends…..hyper…..anyway thank you for your service and support and education on so many things!! You’re an awesome inspiration to me!! 11:03 pm Urbana Illinois

Not from my perspective….when I heard “changing our relationship to the narrative “ , I was truly stopped in my path! This statement resonated with me and gave me something deep to consider!

Well when I meditate I don’t do it because I am looking for peace. I am exploring my inner world and symbols that come up to get my psychology healed. Also to tap into all the universe. I go up the chakras and I then get to the inner connections. It’s an interesting world and also I get messages to fix things or what to work on or even psychic visions and messages.

I agree that adolescents should be the appropriate time to teach and practice reflection and consideration of others. However, it probably has to start before that even for a few minutes a day.

Thank you so Mayim! While I understand that no one should take the contents of these videos as a diagnosis of conditions or even treatments, I believe that the education here is invaluable for those who are suffering from mental illness. ❤ It helps people to start thinking about change and growth. ❤ Learned so much from these interesting guest speakers! And you are brilliant!!!

Mayim a great guest once again. I would like to thank for giving him a platform. I would appreciate hearing more about your personal experiences pertaining to the topics and how you see that it's helped you grow through your life. I missed Jonathen today. Is he delving into something new? He always seems to bring the logical and understanding of how it applys to the topics the guest is speaking about.

Meditation must be taught and practiced in a trauma-informed way. This is not often done. David Treleaven has studied (and continues to study) the cautions with practicing meditation, especially with people who have experienced traumas. See his book: Trauma Sensitive Mindfulness.

Truly enjoy watching the episode! It is interesting and covers a wide range of wellness-related topic. i think when you try to meditate, your not just looking for calm, your also looking for happiness and inner peace. Increased inner peace and pleasure can be attained by setting aside some time each day to practise mindfulness meditation.

16:14 "I'll bet every person listening to this podcast brushes their teeth". Actually, I don't. Instead I just don't eat sugar, and my teeth have always been excellent, no cavities ever. If you don't make pollution, there is no sludge to clean up. If you don't litter, there is no trash to remove. If you don't eat sugar, you don't get dental cavities. I mean I eat fruits and drink water but like no sugary drinks, cereals, desserts, etc. I consider sucrose to be poison, sin, haram. It's for children, not grown men. I'm kinda okay with women eating it, like jams and marmalades, because I consider women sort of closer to children than men, at least in that regard and also in terms of like the big eyes and adorableness. Oh, also I sometimes floss and use a metal thing (I use a flat round-headed pimple popper because unlike a dental scaler it's not sharp so I can't poke my gums with it), but even then I will go a whole week at a time not touching my teeth with anything and they're fine. Maybe if I am going to kiss someone I'll use a tongue scraper or mint or something but teeth brushing isn't necessary.
