Self-discipline and self-teaching is tough but absolutely necessary to raising a child to be a free adult.

Look at the book Reading Reflex. As a former elementary school teacher and currently homeschool teacher, whole language and phonics have only about a 60% success rate. So many kids get stuck at the 1st grade level. Many, like my son, even seem to be a fluent reader but are actually extremely great at guessing entire sentences due to the beginning of a word and pictures.

I have found that using Rod and Staff Math 3 is a perfect transitional book to being independent...they can write right in the textbook because it has perfect spacing. It teaches all math facts and spends a lot of time on addition and subtraction...and multiplication at the end. I do Rod and Staff 1 and 2 orally with my kiddos plus flashcards.

My kids have learned so much from KZfaq videos. More about space than I ever learned in school. And they learn math facts from videos. My kid that sucks at math, learned a lot of math facts from these videos and increased his level from them

Wow! This is so convicting and sooo true! Thank you for making this video! And what you said about those who don’t enjoy Science and Math is because they weren’t taught those subjects well. I had never thought about it the way he puts is but it is very true in my case. I never had good Science teachers except in 8th and 10th I did have good Physics teachers and I loved Physics those years but my Chemistry and Biology teachers were not engaging and they did not care about their class. So I have always hated those subjects since Elementary because my elementary teacher did not seem to care much for Science either as she did for Social Studies. What a revelation.

RC currículum is very intensive but is great for these important years in our kids lives. I was wondering what you think about extra curricular activities. Many homeschool parents have their kids in every sport they can possibly afford. My kids LOVE play but hate sports. I feel bad for not having enough time to take them to try sports. However, I feel like I value intensive studies and family “down time”.

Or “slow living” as a family and not stressing over school, lunch, dinner prep, sports practice, games on the weekend, I don’t want my life to end up like that so rushed and cutting our school time or quality of it, down just to squeeze in sports or even socializing. But do you think I would be holding my kids back?

Karen, my 11 year old has been in special education public school, i estimate it will take up to a year to break out of the habit of having someone being there. He will have to start from the beginning. It will not be easy. My main concern is that the public school will attempt to seek family services on my family, but in my state IL, homeschooling is very easy to get started.

Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, so they shouldn't and actually right now there is an explosion in homeschooling and everyone can understand why with what is happening. I would suggest taking a little time to "de-school" and just have fun together, read lots of books, maybe explore any museums that are still open and just have a sort of reset. Then take the time to go over new expectations and build up to it. I have a few videos on my channel on special needs and tips such as using Pomodoros to stay focused. Excited for you!

Next year, My oldest will be in 8th grade. At this point, is it too late to start RC with him? My others will be 6th grade, 1st/2nd grade and then a 5 year old that technically wouldn't be school age. I'm very drawn to this, but feel it may be too late for my older ones.
@ourhouse
@ourhouse 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's ever too late. You can use a Saxon Math Placement test on the RC website to see what book he would be in, find a point where he would start in the book list, work on all the vocabulary, write everyday etc. The same process would work well for the 6th grader, then the rest can start from the beginning of the book list and first Math book.
