I think you have to weigh if you are doing much more good than harm, I don't think I would stop healing people because of that mistake.

It's his sense of responsibility. More good than harm is generally ok but not in surgery. Mistakes can kill the patient. He noticed his age was becoming a problem that could introduce a higher chance of mistakes, so he decided to retire before it's too late.

You have to think of it as you or a loved one. Would you want him doing surgery on the person you loved the most in this whole world if he was starting to make mistakes or forget something? Neither would he, and so he did what he felt was best.
