This video shows how we clean the boots that are abused badly in the wilderness. It is very important to remove all the dirt and mud first and then we can begin the clean process. After cleaning, we provide the leather with essential nourishment. The last step is to apply water-proofing on the leather to make the boots ready for your next adventures on them.
Here is step-by-step:
Remove the dirt and mud on the sole with a sole brush
Use saddle soap to wash the uppers
Rinse the boots
Air dry or use boot dryer to dry the boots
When the boots are fully-dried, apply shoe cream or leather conditioner to nourish the leather
Gently brush the boots to make sure all the cream/conditioner has been evenly and thoroughly applied on the leather
Apply beeswax-based water-proofing on the leather with fingers or cloth
Use hair-dryer to accelerate the water-proofing get absorbed into the leather
Good to rock on the boots again!
Please be noted, these Danner boots are not equipped with Gore-tex. Please use Gore-tex safe leather conditioner if your boots are lined with Gore-tex.

I bought a pair of Danner's my first year in college and have worn the same boots ever since. That was in 1990.

Thanks for this video. I have read that saddle soap shouldn't be used on boots with Goretex. I feel like there's a lot of conflicting information. I use saddle soap on all of my non-goretex boots. But I have waited to clean my Mountain Lights because of this information. What are your thoughts about this? Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the feedback. What I heard is that do not apply oil/grease on Gore-tex boots as the oil will do harm to the Gore-tex membrane. That's also why there are some leather care products claiming to be Goretex-safe on the market. As for the saddle soap on Gore-tex boots, to be honest, it is my first time to hear about not to use saddle soap on Gore-tex boots, so I can't really tell whether it is right or not. But I think there must be some leather cleaner which is Goretex-safe. If I find something like this in the future, I surely will update you. Thank you very much for the input. Stay safe!

A non-pro opinion: Foam the saddle soap. Put it on quickly, wipe it off even more quickly.

Can’t relate. I always clean my shoes after ever time I wear them, and put them back into the original box if I have it. Nothing running tap water, a fork fork for stones, a toothbrush and makeup wipes can remove.

Thank you for your feedback. Work/hiking boots are not that fragile to take the rinse with running water. In this case, since the boots are very muddy and durty, it would need lots of makeup wipes to remove the soap foam that contains the dirt and mudd; running water is a fast and better way to do it.

It depends on the leather. If it is smooth leather, then it should work.

What kind of brush is that you are using for initial dirt removal? And what kind is the one you’re using for cleaning with the saddle soap? Are they stiffer than the horsehair polishing brush? Thanks
@DrSole
@DrSole Жыл бұрын
The first brush is specially used to remove the the dirt on the sole; hence, the hair is very stiff. The one that we use with the saddle soap is pretty much like the horsehair, but it is built with a handle that we think it is very useful to clean the shoes. In this part, you don't really need a specific brush; an abandoned tooth brish should be just doing fine.

0:17 laces stayed awful clean while these boots got "dirty." I'm suspicious. Suspicious enough to get snarky with quotation marks.

These were nearly new before the hike. The mud and dirt on the boots were caused by a day-hike in the rain, which explained why the shoelaces were not as dirty as the leather uppers. Hope this helps.
