There's only one Doctor Z and we love the heck out of him. Also all you Z forum guys are very handy, they know Dr.Z amps extraordinarily well.

I retreat here and to a handful of other guitar guru channels when I need an escape from the news and social media. I’m gradually just not going to those other places and it makes me happier. Listening to the Doc talk about amps always puts a smile on my face, and then I just want to turn on my Dr. Z amp and make music. Thank you, Doc.

Hey Doc, in the 62 years that I have been playing guitar, I have played and owned hundreds of amplifiers, and I currently own three Dr Z amps, a Z Wreck, a DB4 and a Maz 18. I always play through two amps so I always pair a Dr Z with one of my blackface Fender amp, depending on size of venue, a match made in heaven.

When I was maybe 20 I worked at a small guitar shop in La Grange Illinois. I heard about Kenny, saw ads, and thought I'd give him a call as I was struggling developing the tone in my head. Today I regret not buying one of his Express Amps, but I was looking for something more Mesa Rectifier sounding. I brought up texture and harmonics in the sound I was looking for, and Kenny just lit up and we (or mostly he) talked about texture and harmonics for about 3 hours. It was nice to talk with someone that really got what I was looking for, when everyone else was just talking gain, volume and EQ. An express would have been too much amp for me back then (speaking specifically of the touch sensitivity), and I wonder if I had let him talk me into one, if he could have gotten me what I was looking for and I could have grown into the amp skill wise.

I guess I'm glad the airbrake style attenuator I built didn't have a royalty. I deleted the switch and added a wire to the rheostat to make it attenuate down to zero.

An new design with EL34 single ended in Class A would be something pretty cool maybe with a push pull mid frequency selection etc and a blend between clean annd dirty together. The EL34 have the bottom end omfff and a great break up aswell. Just shooting an idea.

I have Dr. Z EMS head and cab, great sound when it works, it developed a low level crackle which after about 2-3 mins slowly rises in volume to a banshee like wail rendering the amp unusable the odd thing is you can hear the the guitar signal "behind" the noise (parallel to), I've had this back to an amp tech who's done warranty work for Matchless 4 times already and it is still there as I speak, everything seems to be ok on test equipment, but this problem persists, I have posted on the Z forum to no avail, any advice would be more than welcome, I have had the amp for 3 yrs and most of this last year has been spent on the bench, the tech looking at it is highly respected and a really great guy who is very puzzled by this, as I say any advice on this would be very welcome, thanks.

Mike are you familiar with the VHT Special series? I own 2 of their's because I can't afford yers yet...lol. Paid $200, for a handwired 6watt head, that holds it own in a small club, stage volume situation. Their powerscaling is awesome. Love it if you checked it out and gave me an opinion. These are discontinued. Had some decent amps in my day, but always loved the older handwired's, but never could grab one. Remember the first-time I plugged into a real blackface, and remember thinking, why doesn't my Fender sound like this.

Hmmm... ALL My absolute BEST Sounding & performing amps Don't have a master volume. Maybe I'm wrong but I get the impression that you use a different approach to the MV. I see a Master volume Amp as an Amp W/Variable gain @ the input stage. Well, I can do that W/an Endless variety of Dist/Overdrive boxes. I WANT you to prove me wrong. I've Giged & toured for years. Biggest nightmare Amp ? Any MESA w/6 thousand 3 way switches, ( Front & Back ) & 135 knobs ! WTF ! I KNOW You're Amps are FAR from that !

If you like high gain sounds especially a very tailored mid and a very tailored low end, a Mesa or a Peavey or Soldano will do it far better than any dirt box. That being said I far prefer the Peavey method than the Mesa one. They are all just highly modified jcm800 2203s. Which is a master volume cascading gain stage amp.

The Question was CLEARLY for Dr Z. I've Rented those amps through cartage Co's. Most Blow CHUNKS. I do like Soldano's. & Which Peavey ?? ( There are a couple of Sleepers) that only few were made. & ONLY the Very early Boogies. NO, I'm NOT into the Hair Metal sound, Nu Metal... (( NO )) Uggghh !!!
