Dr Z, im an amp newbie.i recently got a Monoprice Stage Right 15W. Q: would it be a good idea to use the 1W feature as a sort of standby? (it has no real standby switch)

Keep some pot holders in your panic kit and pull the tubes ... hot tubes do not like to be jostled about in an amp after a job.

Nice playing, awful recording sound. Why?
@GiacomoRavioli14 күн бұрын
From Ted Weber himself... Here are the straight facts on impedance mismatches, and hopefully it will explain why there are contradictory reports: ON A TUBE AMP It is okay to run a LOWER impedance cabinet or speaker than the amp’s output impedance. Usually a mismatch of 2:1 is okay. (i.e. amp at 16 ohms, cab at 8 ohms.) It is dangerous to run a HIGHER impedance cabinet or speaker, as there is a potential for flyback currents that could either cause a catastrophic failure, or the stress over time can cause long-term failure eventually. (although with a tube amp, it’s really best that you keep the impedance matched.) Amp power is not affected by mismatching. ON A SOLID STATE AMP It is okay to run a HIGHER impedance cabinet or speaker than the amp’s output impedance. (i.e. amp at 4 ohms, cab at 8 ohms.) It is dangerous to run a LOWER impedance cabinet or speaker. Amp power output is reduced, the higher the impedance.

Doctor! Will we ever get a z wreck with fx loop?
@DrZAmplification21 күн бұрын
No, the majority of the overdrive and magic in the Z Wreck comes from the power section (which includes the phase inverter). An FX loop, by definition, will break the circuit pathway between the preamp and power section and significantly alter this relationship. So to include an FX loop will alter the sound of the Z Wreck, and a new design would need to be considered. Then it would cease being a Z Wreck. In short, it will not sound like you think it will sound. There are a few novel products such as the Fryette Power Station and the new Synergy Z Wreck module that will allow you to get the Z Wreck sound (and mode) with an FX loop. For those that want the simplest and purest signal path from guitar to amp, we will still be hand-wiring the Z Wreck like we have for 15 or so years!
@pb2519321 күн бұрын
@@DrZAmplification thanks doctor! Is there a shop where I can try many z amps and pick my forever-lifelong-friend-amp? Seems guitar center does not stock these? Also - would you happen to have a demo of reverb and delay in front of the z wreck? I'm gonna try checking KZfaq for it anyway in case someone else has it..
@pb2519321 күн бұрын
Btw coming back to the case for an fx loop, can't the fx loop just be open-circuited when there is nothing plugged into it? This would leave the signal intact even fx loop isn't used...
@DrZAmplification21 күн бұрын
@@pb25193 again, inserting the FX inbetween the preamp and power section will not give you the intended results of what an FX loop is designed for: to feed a distorted signal into time-based modulation. The majority of the overdrive in the Z Wreck is based in the power section. You will end up with smeared and distorted FX as opposed to clean FX, as the power section will be distorting. There's no way around this unless you insert FX post the power section and before the speaker which is only possible with a reamping device like a Power Station. The intended use of FX loops are in amps that generate distortion in the preamp of the amp, which is then fed into the FX, then amplified by a clean, undistorted power amp. As mentioned, the overdrive of the Z Wreck is not generated primarily in the preamp, it's generated in the power section.

Announcing my presence! I am a rich noob who just wants to figure out how this thing is "voxy" with el34!! I am laughing at myself as i muster the audacity to post such a noobish question to a genius like dr.z. Some facts about me: - i am a noob - i am an electrical engineer - i love vox but hate marshall
@DrZAmplification27 күн бұрын
It's because the Vox sound isn't EL84s! It's their tone stack and lack of negative feedback. The main thing about EL84s is they compress and overdrive sooner than EL34s (and most power tubes). It's less about sound and more about the feel of the tubes. The sound, tone, and chime of "vox" is more about the circuitry. In the same way, the kerrang and upper mid cut of a Marshall isn't about the EL34s (though those can accentuate it), but how they taper the low end early in the circuit and how the cathode follower circuit works. As well as the fact that Marshalls are fixed bias with negative feedback, and Voxes are cathode biased without negative feedback.

Am I mistaken but when Lance turns up the preamp all the way and says that you are hearing only amp gain only it appears the Tube Driver is still on.(4:35 - 5:24). I'm sure it wasn't intentional but I think Cole knew and he turns it off as soon as Lance is done. Curious to actually hear just the gain of the amp.

I recently acquired a Dr Z MAZ Senior built in 2009. It is astoundingly solid and sounds incredible. Some people struggle to describe how they sound. I would say they’re like a black face Deluxe on steroids with 20% ac15 chime sprinkled on top; but it is it’s own sound. That’s why people often struggle to describe the sound. I find it rich, round and full. Overdrive pedals sound beautiful through it. (I have the 1x12 combo) It is heavy at 54 pounds but it has inspired me to get in better shape! And the spring reverb sounds fantastic in mine. Lots of glass in that one, but I’ve always wanted a hand wired tube amp. Thanks Dr Z!!!

Hello Doc, Before reading please excuse my ignorance as someone who has no idea about building an amp... 😅 Just want to say I'm absolutely loving the X-Ray. I've gigged it every weekend since getting it and took it to every practice and used it in the house. It does it all, loud stages to a spare of the moment 11pm on a Sunday night noodling. Its now my favourite amp. I have couple of questions. 1. Would it be possible to get a trusted tech to ad an FX Loop to my Z-Wreck Jr? Thats what has made all the difference with the X-Ray, its allowed me to ditch a pedal and get clean and drive from my guitar volume. 2. More a request, please do what you've done with the X-Ray, combining 2 legacy amps in one with a Marshall style amp. If you made a amp in the same cab as the X-Ray that was a Remedy and Antidote in one with a Master Volume and Fx loop I'd buy it right this second! I'm sure thats much easier said than done. I've seen you video about how much work went into getting just the Antidote right...😅
@DrZAmplificationАй бұрын
Hi David, so glad you are enjoying your X-RAY. To answer your questions: 1. The loop in the X-RAY is a tube buffered stage and it is part of the overall sound and feel of the amp. It's sound was built around the inclusion of this circuit. To add something like this to a Z Wreck Jr. would significantly change it's sound and gain staging, where it would cease to sound like the Z Wreck Jr. 2. The Remedy and Antidote are closely related to the Superlead and JTM preamps, where they differ is their approach to the output stage. The preamps could be combined in such a way that it could work, but then the question would be, what power section design to marry them to?

@@DrZAmplification Hello, Thanks for the reply, Understood about the Z-Wreck, It must be frustrating sometimes the types of comments you get from guitar players than know nothing about building an amp. It's so easy to assume that it's as simple and just adding it in there. I always assume now there a really good reason something isn't in there. As far as the Remedy/ Antidote power amp section goes I wouldn't have a clue...😅 Really appreciate all the insight. One more question if you don't mind. How would a Celestion Gold changed the Character of the X-Ray and would it work with it? Thanks again!
