Focus on what you can't do in order to improve, sure, but don't let the knowledge of all the things you can't do paralyze you and turn you away from making art.

This is exactly what I'm struggling with at the moment. I like drawing characters but I also like stories and so I want to draw a comic. But because I know that there's so much knowledge involved in doing that and that I have so much to learn, it paralyzes me from drawing. Even when I really want to. It's hard to know where to start and what/how to study at any given moment. I struggle to just jump in and draw like when I was a kid. But I'll try to keep these words of yours in mind as well. Thanks for that.

@@X_Nomad_ omg you are in a similar situation like me in art, I also like drawing characters and telling stories and trying to figure out comic book making as well, and since i know i have a lot to learn, as a total beginner, i end up slowly improving in art and barely drawing sometimes, i really hope you and i and many other Artists struggling like us, find their way out just never give up and don't forget to have fun drawing! ALWAYS!! and Good luck..

Something that happens to me since I was a kid is that my insecurities kind of blind me, and no matter what I do, _it's not enough_ , so I can even end up with a result that isn't he style that was actually intended fot that drawing. Also is kind of a reactions that eventually explodes and I even end up crying just to see later that the thing I was making wasnt that bad.

Thanks for the reminder to be aware of my fears - that was great! I think the best work occurs when I forget about myself and the rest of the world and I'm lost in the moment and the practice.

I think putting yourself in the shoes of an artist you admire to learn so that you can apply it in your own work isn't bad at all. I guess hiding is more about fear of showing your own voice and comfortably imitating something that is "cool" right now. Most famous and successful artists have their own voice, there is a sense of bravery in that, to be vulnerable and still sharing it with people. Yet the funny thing is, we are not our own creation, it lives it's own life and can be experienced separate from the artist.

Definetly feeling fear over the last year has crept into art - if everything in your world becomes unstable and scary it's too easy too excuse yourself from the pursuit of skill - the excuses now feel like a waste of time 😓

it really just comes down honestly to drawing and making art of not only things you like but being proud that you made something, and just knowing as long as you see what you do wrong and hone your skill and practice correctly honest to god you have nothing to worry about.

When you pretend to be an expert, your confidence goes up and you unlock your real potential that’s why drawings get better And if you do your best, of course you will produce your best artwork. I think we got influenced by teachers at school that would always say "you are not doing your best" and they are trying to strive us to do more, while yes, if we REALLY want to do something we will do our best, but not when we are tired or angry. Give yourself guys time to improve. The real improvement is not the one you see RIGHT AWAY is the one you see from time to time and it's not obvious until some months or even years

Picked this book up years ago as a recommendation from a podcast, en back then some things i didn't quite understand. Now that i'm in my final year and working on my graduation project i picked up the book again, and with the insight of the years i was studying, some parts where much more relevant than it did back then. There is always a certain fear, in making and in learning specially with my graduation project is that i've done the research and know the structure but always having the feeling that it's not enough. But i also understand that that's a process of learning, work i did back than i can do better now and more efficiently but certain elements evolved and other things stayed yet somehow feel different.

The comment on talent reminded me of something I think I heard from Alan Watts on buddhism, went something like: "Before enlightenment: chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment: chop wood, carry water."

On talent - i agree with Marshall. There is such a thing. I think its not nearly as important as some think but it is a factor. To those who do think its really important, "get to work" seems like a waste of time because they assume they'll never be good anyway if they dont have it. In the end though it probably mostly comes down to whether you enjoy creating/studying art enough to keep doing it for thousands of hours.

Brilliant book, I read in one sitting. I know what the fear is. I purchased this and enrolled for counselling. I making lots of art, for many years ....... I know the fear and it actually very real even if people die go leave or otherwise, it just compounded. That I am not long gonna put up with. So I took action. The hurt will always remain. Always.

Thank you awhile back recommending the book The War of Art by Steven Pressfield. I have wondered if my being afraid I am not good enough is just a form of self sabotage that we agree to enter into with the help of Resistance.

I havent drawn anything in over a month because imposter syndrome has been kicking my ass. I have a lot of ideas I want to draw but I just feel like I'm not good enough to make those ideas come to life and I give up. But you guys are right, what I have right now is what I need to produce my best work. Time to pick myself up🙏🏾

If what we have right now is all we need to produce our best work, and I know this is true. Then us not working which I am guilty of as well, same with my writing, is possibly being so critical of our future work we haven’t done yet that we don’t do it?! Wow, there are plenty of other people willing to do this for me I really want to stop being so critical of myself and my work. Because not working is really a punishment to me!

I guess it's fear? Every so often. I have this near overwhelming sense of envy of a former artist friend I had. I don't know why it keeps coming back. But when I don't think about jealousy, I can manage to pull my weight.

Guess my biggest issue in an "art career" seems to be "fads".... I see people doing or saying something that's popular at the moment then they explode and make a career out of it..... Even more frustrating when their technical skill is severely lack or extremely unoriginal.....

Art history is story of "fads" every movement had its creators and those who imitate. I find technical skill less important than creativity and uniqueness. It think it is far more evident these days with social media. Putting negativity out there it seems can be a projection of artists frustration from comparing themselves to others.

If you focus on what you can’t do you won’t t do it. Must focus on what you can, i can draw a circle, so that the brain can find a path and curiosity and creativity become a talent and more skilled than just assuming you cant draw a circle and you won’t .

Huh. Funny Vandruff says this. I was in his class and he not only played favorites, he made my friend cry by being an asshole to her about her project.
