Few movies have ever captured the sheer terror of being denied a mortgage extension.

Interestingly enough, I never once thought of the curse as about whether or not the girl should have been dragged to hell. I thought they deliberately established that the gypsy woman was the problem, seeing as how she doesn't pay her mortgage despite her extensions yet never even gave any exposition as to why she wasn't, and when she couldn't manipulate the situation any longer she cursed the girl in petty spite. It never occured to me that the girl was meant to be in the wrong lol

Classic Sam Raimi movie. When he was announced to do the Spider-Man twenty years ago, I was a little surprised, but he pulled it off. This movie along with his other horror classics is what separates him from most other directors, his style is different, can never get enough of his horror movies.

Mac, he also did a good western, the one with Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe and Gene Hackman. bonus message. for those going through the comments, I've got good news. God is good because He gives His blessings to everyone, whether they be good or bad. but everyone has at least, told a lie, or stolen something in their life. and that makes them sinners, and God will not allow sinners in heaven; in His presence, because He is holy. so, God has to punish the sinners in hell, because God is severe and just. but God is also love and He made a way for some to be saved from His wrath. here are the steps: 1. admit that you're a sinner and are lost. 2. realize that the penalty of sin is death (hell). 3. believe that Jesus (who is God) died on the cross, was buried, then rose from the grave, to pay the penalty for man's past, present, and future sins. 4. trust Christ alone as your Savior, and not on your own good deeds to get you to heaven (nor a combination of your faith and self-righteous works). 5. pray to God NOW that you're accepting Christ's free gift of salvation because if you die before making this decision, it's too late, and you'll 🔥🥵😈 6. and to be a disciple, tell people about Jesus, read the bible, go to church regularly to know God's will for your life.

I am with Raimi here, who said Christine deserved her fate. The old lady said she made all her payments until she got sick & was expecting more money soon. But Christine denied her because she wanted a promotion, thinking only of herself. Her boss said it was her choice. And she made the choice she thought would benefit her. Then when confronted either by Ganush or the granddaughter, she lies & shifts blame to the bank & her boss, neither of which forced any decision on her. It's just her taking no accountability for a choice **she** decided to make. Then after the curse, she's willing to kill innocent animals & dececrate graves to save herself. We see how quick she is to demand or beg other people for help, some of whom died trying to help her. The pawn shop owner gave her a taste of her own medicine when he had no pity on her & told her to take or leave his offer. Then at the film's end, she begs a clerk to sell her a coat despite being told twice the store was closed, again showing hiw entitled & selfish she is. Unlike the old woman losing a house, Christine could do without a damn coat. Really....lmao And in the end, her competition was an idiot who got himself fired. So she probably would have gotten the promotion regardless. Because even if she granted an extension, she was loyal to the bank unlike the other douche. Her greed & pride did her in. Two of the Seven Deadly Sins I might add. Lmao All this because getting a promotion for herself & her ego came before sympathy & helping someone in need. Then when her ass is in hot water & only gonna get hotter, she does more reprehensible things that assure her a spot in Hell anyway. But oh well. Now she doesn't have to worry about a job, being fat, or her boyfriend's family anymore. 🤣

The point of the curse wasn’t whether the decision was right or wrong; it’s that she pushed the responsibility off on someone else when it really was her choice to make. She may have made the right choice logically speaking, but she made the decision with the intent of impressing her boss and securing her promotion and not because it was the choice she believed in. That’s why the granddaughter was so hostile to her at the door. She knew that she decided to decline the loan and not her boss like she claimed. I feel like if she had owned up to her decision and confessed that she was the one who decided to reject the loan they “may” have decided to help her. It’s actually a recurring theme I see in every horror movie having to do with Gypsy curses at this point. As for the movie itself… first time I saw it when it came out I really liked it. As the years have moved on I’m far more disinclined to enjoy this movie. It has some genuinely good creepy moments, but for me it’s a very special effects heavy gross-out movie with a mediocre story 🤷🏻 In fact, some of the effects are just so bad I can’t help but laugh, particularly the scene involving that anvil and the eyeballs squirting out 🤦🏻‍♂️ I can’t say whether it’s due to effects coming so far along since it’s release, or if I am just genuinely jaded by horror movies at this point. I still like the movie despite a sort of harsh criticism, but it’s very definitely at the lower levels of my list

As a kid, my first discovery for Sam Raimi was obviously "Spider-Man" 1-3, and I had no idea that he made horror movies before the "Spider-Man" trilogy. Sure, the hospital attack scene in "Spider-Man 2" is scary and all, but the overall film is still awesome. Back in '09, when I almost turned 7, there was this TV spot of "Drag Me to Hell" that was shown during a commercial break, and it really scared the living daylights out of me. Then I saw Sam Raimi's name in the TV spot and my mind was like, "Wait, that's the guy who made the 'Spider-Man' movies? Holy s***!" Years later, I began watching Raimi's other movies outside of the "Spider-Man" trilogy like "Darkman" and the original "Evil Dead" trilogy, and I understood his filmmaking style like his balance between dark horror and "Three Stooges"-esque comedy. Almost 15 years later, "Drag Me to Hell" is Sam Raimi's kick-ass comeback of the horror genre.💯

It's more than an allegory. She does have an eating disorder, and this story is about her final days. The hellish visions are hallucinations, which is a symptom of being malnourished and tired. I was so excited for this movie when it was being made. Sam Raimi had been doing Spider-man but I was a huge fan of Evil Dead. He'd done some producing but when they announced he was making his first true horror flick in nearly a decade (or if you don't count The Gift or Army of Darkness it was 22 years) that was supposed to be more of a throw back to Evil Dead 2 it was completely unexpected. These days it's far more common for directors who started in horror that make it big with, usually, superhero movies to go back to smaller budgeted flicks since there are so many more production studios that make those kinds of movies like Blumhouse, Twisted Pictures, Atomic Monster and A24. Horror was still kind of niche back when though. Sam Raimi himself started Ghost House with Rob Tapert which was one of the earliest production studios to focus on horror. They made the American remakes of The Grudge and the more recent Evil Dead movies of course. It seemed like Raimi had settled into his producer role shepherding new talent so it was a nice surprise when he announced he was directing even if it was PG-13 but I had faith and I wasn't disappointed. This still feels very much like old school Raimi and blends comedy and horror better than Army of Darkness did. Even though I still have a soft spot for that one.

Another actor we usually see in Sam Raimi's movies, Bruce Campbell, wasn't in this one either. Though he was offered a cameo role in this movie, but he turned it down because he was busy filming the TV-show Burn Notice at the time. My guess is that he was originally meant to play the pawnshop employee/owner. Considering the movie has the same style as Evil Dead, I could see this being in the same universe. The biggest flaw with this movie is the ugly early 2000's CGI effects, they really stood out & it's so obvious! That is one thing I don't miss about the early 2000's, the overly use of CGI effects & many of them did not look good at all! Sin City is one of the few movies from that era that actually really had great CGI effects! We still have it today, sure, but now they at least mix CGI with practical effects & not only use CGI all the d*mn time!

That lady was petty as hell. Cursing her all because she didn’t give her an EXTRA extension after she was already given one. Like pay your bills. You a grown lady, pay your bills!!!! And then you have all these people showing up to her funeral. Where were they when she loosing the house???? Why didn’t she curse her family and friends????

I really don't like the fact the gypsy apparently has the ability to condemn someone's soul to eternal damnation just because she feels humiliated. Thinner is fine as your affecting the mortal world and you go wherever you are meant to at the end but this say's random old gypsy women decide where you go after you die regardless of what you actually deserve.

Love horror movies now, but this came out when I was 19. My idiot friend said, "Sam Raimi produced all the Spiderman movies!" Having no idea that Evil Dead even existed, we saw this on opening night, curious about Raimi's expansion into horror 🤣 I still give him shit about it -- we learned to appreciate and lean into jump scares with this flick.

Not quite sure i entirety agree with the fact that it was said, its not your home unless you buy. Unfortunately some people have no choice but to rent however, keep up with the rent payments instead of getting into dept and going into loans does change things but you need to me more aware of the fact in some countries it is nearly impossible to buy outright. I worked, for years i worked in my career of childcare and nursery nursing until i got too ill to do it anymore and right now mental illness has completely overtaken me with bipolar depression amd psychotic episodes so i rent my property. And i do see this as my home. Ill never be able to buy so i do think your comment is a little bit unfair. But, im in the uk, so you might see things a little differently from where you are. Great reaction though

@minuette1752 buy even when I did work I could never afford to buy and that is as much as anybody else . . . They work to the bone and never be able to buy . . .so are they not entitled to call their living place a home???? Get real of course they can and with 60 years of renting your home you wouldn't be far off buying by then anyways! If you are going to be narrow-minded and say that their living place isn't theirs despite them paying paying paying the given rent then that's pretty harsh! They may not own it, it may not be owning the property, but it is still their home

This was one of those movies that changed by opinion of Allison Lohman. Before this I only knew her in some c-list ranch movie with Tim McGraw yes that guy. And thought at best she was a pretty subpar actress this movie made see she really has range. Which is kind of sad as this was one of her last movies before she retired. All in all a very different type of horror movie and at least Lohman walked away on a high note.
