I got into one of the top universities in the world as part of a quota of kids from low income backgrounds and I felt completely undeserving of being there for the first few years. Even though my subject was my dream to learn about, I felt that my peers were more deserving than I was. That I was not equipped to handle this world financially or intellectually. Undergrad is just an expensive piece of paper, but after graduation, it's about who you and your parents know, so the rich just get their own kids jobs, while the rest of us write a bunch of cover letters that'll never get read because we don't have such references in our network.

I think my school was a rarity in that the BFA program I attended really did prepare you for real work situations instead of preparing me for grad school. Going to a school that didn't have a grad program really helped. Sorry you can't get a gig--hope that turns around for you before too long.

"I didn't know it was possible to, if you're rich, call someone and say 'can we pay this much to get in'" sis, let me tell you- I went on half tuition to an extremely expensive high school. One of my friends there had a dad who literally sold mansions for a living, there were no driving classes, no shop classes, no home ec, we had chefs that literally fresh-cooked multiple different meal options every day and my peers would COMPLAIN ABOUT THEM... and most importantly, there was this mandatory class we had to take in order to graduate which prepared us for college applications. During that course, we had one class where we had to pretend to be a college board of admissions and choose which students to let in. At the very end of the debate, two fictional candidates were left. One, a girl who had earned scholarships and scored consistently high grades but was a first-generation college student. The other, a boy who nearly flunked out of high school, had terrible recommendations from his teachers, and most importantly: his parents left a hefty donation to our college. I spent the *entire class* debating with the other real students over which candidate we should let in. Every. Other. Student. in that class genuinely believed that it was morally wrong not to accept the bribe and let the bribe student in, because every other student in the class empathized with the bribe student and not the one who actually earned a spot in college. The class ended with every other student being unwilling to budge. We never came to an agreement. After the class, one of the teachers pulled me aside and broke it to me that these were real conversations that college boards actually had, that it is actually like that.

So my 1st choice school (a state school in the middle of nowhere) put my admission on hold until I get a better ACT score and raise my GPA a little. I took the ACT 3 times, worked my but off to get my GPA up, and did so many extra curricular activities and got in. What’s sad is I later talked to some slacker in one of my college classes who told me that he had lower scores and GPA than me and got accepted easily, which made me wonder why my school made me put all that work in if it didn’t even matter. Anyway I now have a bachelors degree and over $20,000 in debt.

Also wouldn’t Lori Laughlin’s daughters story be super easy to refute? She documents like every second of her life, pretty sure she would have footage of countless rowing practices if it ever happened
