They are almost an inside joke in the enthusiast scene because they are pieces of junk that middle aged accountants buy because they couldn't afford a Ferrari or Lambo. Only plus is their engines sound great. Also, you should take a look at some video reviews of even fairly recent exotic cars (that have actually been driven frequently) and you can see that the build quality is actually surprisingly horrible in a lot of cases, especially the interior. Peeling leather, paint problems, engine problems after only 10,000 miles etc, but obviously these customers won't have any problems paying $20,000 for new seats. For those types of cars, you are buying a rare art piece like a Rolex, not a fairly priced tool like a smart watch. BMW is somewhere in between where you are paying for the name, but also a lot of tangible things that make them track beasts, so I feel like the comparison is valid. People will use these cars for similar purposes. Fast, track capable luxury cars.

@@mckylecfc disagree tuned Golf R 600 BHP would smash 90% of most things out there. So you may have owned both but have you ever seen either properly tuned? Also dont forget how light the R is so thats also a huge factor of why its so much quicker. Like your love for the M "power" but ive seen what Golf Rs are doing lined up against lambos and thats all i need to see.

Actually, the Bmw doesn’t actually make the power that they Bmw claims, this should be a given, but a lot of people seem to think it’s an accurate crank figure 😂. The Golf R is also more powerful than VW claims, but only by 20-30hp or so.

But therein lies the joke... the puny 4 cylinder 2.0T's are punching up at the 3.0T's. Power to weight ratio and low end torque helps the VW's. They're not meant to be in the conversation, yet, here we are. Sz something. Imagine if VW's started coming in 3.0T DSG... where would you hide then?

@@scottyj9150 Well put. It's different target markets for sure. But the GTI is lighter and more tossable. Still miss the RWD but as far as FWD's go the Mk7 GTI has been a really really fun car to have owned for 5 years now. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

This is politics. But if you look price difference between R and M4, and overal performace of both, R is clear winner! + new haldex awd. There was a video of it taking an amg with 100 hp on top of the R and the R ended up winning I think it would be an 11s 1/4 mile with simple Bolton's and tune

@@MonicaHolly143 I daily drive my modded out mk6 R and it hits 12.4 with 375 ponies and 420 ftlbs torque. Stock turbo, FBO Just shocked how technology advances, and now there's an MK8 R that will smoke me being completely stock. Exciting ☺️

@@MonicaHolly143 with a tune it'll be mid low 11s, calling it now. The MK7 R with a stage 2 tune and some bolt ons is a mid/high 11's car.
