In this episode Sarah and I will take my $500 CeeBee Avenger to the Upper Midwest Powerboat Association race in Fremont, WI! This is a local drag racing series that has some insane boats, great people, and awesome vibes! I've never done this before, I haven't used the boat this season, and I decided to try to do this less than 48 hours before the race started.

It's amazing how well you entertain. This video had absolutely no drag racing of the boat listed as being drag racing in the title and I really didn't even care. Keep having fun and letting us all in on it!

I was told by an old merc builder to always get rid of the quick connections for the fuel and make sure I have as few places for an air leak as possible.

hi ADDvanced try taking the thermostats out and put in washer with a recruitment hole since i got a merc xri dat dos the same and it fixes the heat problem for me. greetings from denmark. ps i hope you will post som more boat videos soon

I picked up a ~$500 boat a couple years ago and had fuel issues like this. I decided to rip the entire fuel system out and replace everything. New lines from the tanks, new primer bulb, new fuel pump that doesn't mix oil (premix only now), completely tear apart all the carbs and replace everything in them, new lines to carbs, everything. Now I don't have ANY fuel delivery issues. I learned from the past to not just try to fix one or two little things like whack-a-mole, I went in full throttle on it and it worked. Also, side note: if this engine is carb (and I'm pretty sure it is) it will not start at an angle like you tried first in the video. The fuel bowls need to be completely level before it will start properly.

i spent most of my season chasing a fuel delivery problem, the quick connect would block off after about 30 seconds. ditched it and ran a cheapy amazon fuel pump. got rid of most of my problems and ran 54 mph on a 16' open bow! keep up to the content dude, you've been a pretty solid inspiration to want to keep up the old outboard speed boats!!!

Definitely Jack I am new motor up A wee bit at a time, and play with your propeller configuration. Maybe cup the trailing edge of the prop Blade. Possibly go from a four blade to a three blade. All sorts of things you can do.

Ditch the primer bulb and hook fuel right to the fuel pump. Double check the poppet valve for your overheat issue.

What do you mean by double check? I had one person say to snip the poppet spring, and remove 1 coil, as the aftermarket ones were made too stiff. Would that cause overheating?

@@ADDvanced more so correct installation because its easy to misalign. It may be too stiff You can flush thru the poppet and confirm there is no debris in the water diverter plate aswell. I'm not a pro but It was a suggestion that worked for working out my overheat issue.

Cutting a loop or two for poppet valve spring was in a Mercury Service bulletin.

Please look at your video where you change poppet valve. Go to 10:16 minute. Note the spring on new set is much longer than the old set. The tension will be way too high, thus preventing the valve to open at high RPM where the outboard needed water dump from poppet valve. Poppet valve is the cooling mechanism needed at high RPM.

Hi from Cornwall in the uk , love watching you guys and laughing along your great - gutted it didn’t get the in the racing but hey Ho- I noticed you got the 2 stroke oil in a separate tank feeding in ? If the oil feed pump stops working on the engine its good bye to the pistons / cylinders - my idea would be to fit the oil blank kit and just mix the oil with the gas then your sure it’s getting the lubrication it needs . You probably know all this but such a beautiful xr2 you got running with all the work you’ve put into it . Bless you guys. Tim

Good luck on the alpha ss. Was out with my boat friends last weekend so i asked if any of them new of any and they all laughed at me and said good luck. One of them did say that he knew a guy that had one several years back but doesn't know what ever happened to it.

you can try Syn-Flex line used in air brake systems for trucks. Not sure what size you were looking for, but they do have metric sizes.

I got rid of the quick disconnect and installed an electric fuel pump. With carbureted motors 6.5 to 7 psi worked for me to about 6300 rpm.

It was great meeting you guys ! I'd replace the water pump 1st on that motor. Even though it may have a good piss stream , I've have the same issue with the same motor and a new impeller fixed it.

Likewise! It actually has a new impeller. And poppet valve. And poppet spring. And headgaskets. And thermostats. I'm going to try to pull the powerhead again this week, I think there is something in the midsection clogging waterflow.

How much do you think your Sleekcraft is worth? Yeah the o-rings or the fitting itself is bad on the fuel hose adapter to the motor on CeeBee. Try looking for a Stern Jack made by Land N Sea.. I goes between outdrive and transom housing. 8" setback allowing more stable up trim. Alpha SS drives are not out there for sale. You could get the max diameter prop to get some blade out of the water.

This was a great race weekend! Glad the weather was better than last year! Been following you for awhile, guess I never put two & two together to realize you were a WI boy! We were at the house across the river from the boat launch, I remember seeing the Astro back this boat in the water! Till I saw this video I didnt realize it was you. Gonna try again next year?

I have the same motor and have been fighting "overheating" for several years now. My engine has a temp sender in one head, and an alarm sender in the other head, the alarm has never gone off but the temp gauge will go full hot under heavy load. I tested the sender and gauge on the stove and was sure it was accurate. I kept throw parts at the "problem" and recently got frustrated and decided to just run it hard with the gauge buried way past H. The alarm never went off and the motor kept running. I bought an infrared temp gun with me and checked the head temps when the gauge was showing it to be overheating, the heads were 175-180 degrees, right where they should be, so all the time, the gauge has been fooing me.

Never use starting fluid to get a two stroke motor. To start. You might score the cylinder walls.

I bought a $500 boat around the same time you did. Watched your vids last summer. Just stopping by to see if you got the Merc to run without overheating. Guess not :( I'm planning to take my $500 boat to Lake Powell for the eclipse next month, so hopefully it runs! Well, fun video and good luck.

A comment on the Avenger. The engine doesn’t overheat at low speed but overheats at higher rpm. You have updated just about everything to keep it cool. I’m wondering about the head gasket. Could it possibly be installed upside down/backwards which could be covering some cooling ports causing it to over head at high rpm.

I put new headgaskets in it last year too. So, no, I think those are fine.

I absolutely love your content and think you guys do a wonderful job, and I can't even believe the projects you've been able to tackle and your accomplishments. Just one suggestion for you is to always, always work on the mechanical side of your project boats first rather than doing so much cosmetic work before you even know if the vessel is even going to run. Once you get the motor operational, tested, running, and know it'll actually go, only then should you start on the cosmetic issues. All the beautification in the world is a waste of time if the vessel won't run unless you're willing to repower the vessel. You obviously really know what you're doing, however, imo, you're doing things in the incorrect order. Just a little feedback. Good luck to you guys, I love your content, have subscribed, and will keep watching and cheering for you. Idk, maybe you've figured this out for yourself by now! Happy boating!

My mistake was assuming it ran well. My dad told me it ran fine, so if you watch the video, the first thing I do is start it up. I just made the assumption it would keep running. Sucks. I wish I had known about the carb sooner. Cheers!

Replace the primer bulb with a new one or ditch it all together and get a an in-line fuel pump for priming. Same with the quick connector get new fittings or run the fuel line straight to the fuel pump. The black max needs a good battery to start and run too… Actually just ran into that with my brothers 150, he was using his old battery on a jump box, it would crank just fine but didn’t have enough juice for spark. Threw mine in and it fired right up.

Have you checked for double fire as the cause of the over heating issue? Pretty common issue that comes from a bad coil or switch box

Too bad you didn't get to send it, I know I mentioned this before, but Is the timing correct on that thing? I know they can be a bugger to time, not sure about that on but an older inline six, "tower of power" has to be timed at a certain rpm and under load, I also have run into 2 sleds that were over heating and that was the problem, both were a combination of motors put together so the stater plate was in the wrong spot,,,,,,,,,just a thought, love the chanel, My wife is so much like Sara its funny, and well im alot like you lol
