Dragging The Field/Justin's Farm Begins

Alan just got the 1066 back from getting a hydraulic leak fixed, so it was time to stretch its legs and see if the leak was fixed. So Alan hooked it up the field drag to break up the remaining clumps of manure and straw that were spread on the hayfield. We're also finishing up the last batch of maple syrup for 2024. Lastly, we had a viewer question about teaching the kids the economics of farming. In this video, we focused on Justin and the start of his beef cattle herd, as well as his education about beef cattle by sharing a 4-H experiment he did.

The 4-H experiments were great reminds me of when I was in 4-H back in the 50s and 60s in Central Minnesota. About 25 miles south west of Alexandria. Actually, 1 mile from the millennium farmer on KZfaq. I knew his great grandfather John R Johnson.

Good for Justin! My first farming enterprise was meat chickens at his age. At 16 I bought a ewe and her lambs and it kept going from there.

Congratulations Justin! Raise them to about 800 lbs, then sell them! Shavings, because when they put up ice, they put sawdust in between the ice blocks to keep it from melting during the summer!

They dock the price on anything over 700lb. hence you're losing money because their isn't as much profit in it for the backgrounders 😉

Thats what i did when i was young, doing all kinda chores and worked on saturdays by several neigbours and earned my money and buy myself one heifer and one steer, i should mention that the feed and barn i got for free from dad, but i helped every day milking, it gives you responsebilety to take care for youre animals 7days a week and even make some money, good learning curve, keep it up Justin,greetings from a Dutch dairyfarmer

Wishfully thinking when it comes to working off the farm and running a beef cattle operation 🤣 I thought the same thing when I was his age and now that I'm nearing 50 and find that train of logic hilarious and sad all at the same time because I know how it ends. I've been dairy/beef farming my entire life and have never known any other profession so I wish you all the luck in the world with that dream 😊 The main issue you'll find these days is the 8 hour work week which doesn't really exist anymore and you're likely going to be working 12 hour shift which is incompatible with professional farming so you can't having your cake and eat it too. Of course, this excludes the hobby/necktie/weekend warriors who like to play farmer on the weekends 😜 As for the manure clumping, a tedder works extremely well at busting up straw-pack rather than balling it up with a harrow then again switching your bedding from straw to sawdust (pine) will eliminate that issue all together and won't effect your somatic cell count one bit 😁

Pretty much everyone we know who raises beef cattle have off farm jobs. They have beautiful beef cattle. As for sawdust bedding, i used to use it, and it completely plugged up my underground manure system, which caused me to have to dig up the entire pipe and replace it. It was a nightmare. Straw works the best with my operation.

We plant a 80 day corn here in nwpa so years we might put in later day corn. It's amazing how quick the 80 day corn will dry down for silage compared to a mid 90 to 100 day corn

Justine could start watching Sonne Farms in SD. They raise all Angus beef. Maybe he would give Justin a good deal on an Angus bull. Sonne Farms only use corn stalk bedding.

Quite a fine looking animal. Fed out many a Gelbevah x Angus calves through the years. Justin is well on his way. Good for you teaching them about money, never too young to learn. Best regards from Indiana.

Justin had raised beef cow's for over 50 years and we would start a manure pack with corn stalks on dry concrete but after about 5 to 8 inches of corn stalks we would use straw cow's would stay very clean and dry and it would be very easy to clean out and would spread very evenly over the field's just my experience over the years good luck to you in your farming career. Wow Justin , good planning. Hopefully your farm is very productive. Great to have good neighbors. Yes investing 4H money back into your farm is a great way to do it. My daughter went with the same program for FFA and it really paid off for her. She earned a State FFA degree and now she is working toward her national FFA degree. Your options will be wide open in your future. It's going to be interesting how the growing season is going to go. Crop insurance will be a good idea for everyone this year I think.

Thank you to the family that leased and believed in Justin with their cattle. Sometimes knowing that someone else believes in you is a real confidence builder that you can achieve your goals. I was in 4-h cattle 40 plus years ago and still remember some things that were taught. Like filling a 5 gallon bucket with snow and letting it thaw to discover it only a had an inch of water in the bottom. Lesson being that they need fresh water every day and not to count on the snow to water your animals. Let Justin know we’re rooting him on and wish him the very best. !!

Corn stalks are the best in my opinion! They are cheap, insulate very well, and are easy to handle.

Ha! I'm very proud of Justin! Justin, I have been farming (dairy) all my life, and I've been responsible for the business end of it for 40 years. I can teach you everything I know about handling money on the farm in a few short sentences - When someone pays you, they put the money in your right hand. You immediately transfer that money to your left hand and add to it some money from your pocket. Then give all the money in your left hand to your suppliers, promising to give them rest that you owe next month. Then drop to your knees and commence praying. Hasn't failed me yet. Beef farming may be different, but I suspect it is similar. Rest assured God will not fail you.

Alan and Jen had a thought on helping Justin. You have 30,000 on the channel and if only 1/4 of them would throw in a ten spot . We could raise A large amount of money for his cattle business. Hopefully send it to a p o box so he could get every dollar and no 1099 that you might get because of KZfaq. Just mull it over and let me know. If only 1500- 2000 would help the kid out. Big money to him.

4H & FFA are the best programs for young people! There are a ton of opportunities in both to let interested young people to succeed in a bunch of different ways. The time spent with your child going to and from 4H/FFA activities will be some of the best times of your (and their) life. You don't win every time, but you never lose if you don't try. Great video, and all the best to Justin as he builds his beef herd and shows them!👍👍

Hi I am from Ontario Canada love your videos I wish I was still farming but when I was I used to spread my manure in a pile and spread it in the fall it works great spread through the spreader brakes it up and compost better it is nice to have beef cow's but I couldn't get into milking here it cost 25,000 a cow but I love my herferds very easy keepers easy caving ❤

What a very interesting video and great to see Justin having a great interest in the cattle and farming. When I was his age living on the farm and his age with my grandfather, I never got into the cattle stuff ie going to school and working on the farm in summer school holidays but must say it was a great young life and taught me much. It really helped me all through my life so I wish Justin all the best and just get into what you enjoy.

Great video and that was a good experiment, that is the best way to learn, sometimes it is better to learn hands on and not from a book . If I were young like Justin, I would start a black and white face herd. You guys can do this since you already have Holsteins. Take care 🇨🇦👍❤️🚜

Funny how in farming different parts of the country have different terms for everything. From thumb I thought you had plowed and going over it w what in NY is a drag. I'll email you what's a drag here. Spring tooth harrow maybe. But I've seen people calling them what we call a field cultivator. 130g I think was almost couple gallons when we did it 1000 yrs ago. Hope the Halex doesn't freeze. Justin's got it right, no dairy. Mostly not 24/7 and can find someone to babysit beef for couple days.

Thanks for sharing. We used too run a dis over the hay fields in the spring just enough to cut just alittle. To help with rain to soak in and air circulation. Justin sounds like he will go far in Beef production. I wish him all the luck. The dream will come true.

I don't know of any with only 30 cows, but Gierok Farms has around 60 cows, and then there's tayfarms, hartung dairy, Kahl dairy; those are a bit larger farms.

In 1952 my father and grandfather switched from dairy, both milking cows and home delivery to a beef feedlot. My dad said "Dress a young man in white coveralls hand him a pitch fork tell him to go feed the cows and tell him he is a dairyman, he won't be happy. Dress the same man in a plaid shirt and Levi's hand him a pitchfork tell him to go feed the cows and tell him he is a cowboy, he will be happy as all get out!"

Great , just drag across the the spead diection as years ago my dad and myself did the same,with being in the beef finishing with 480 head fat cattle,we had lots of crap ,,i know you have lots to drag out as well being in the dairy business
