Joke's on you, I experienced the whole dragon ball saga through the story mode of Budokai Tenkaichi 3

Power levels are cool, but I always preferred the adventure aspect. The original Dragon Ball can't be beat imo. The original Tenkaich Budokai saga with just Goku and Kuririn delivering milk on mountains as part of their training still takes me to a new world. No one had to destroy a planet either. Just watching them move a boulder was awesome.

The Concepts of GT were actually amazing, if you think about it. The execution however... well, at least the ending was on point.

While SS4 doesn't have any buildup to it, I do enjoy the fact its related to Sayain lore and the entire giant ape aspect of the race. Something that basically seems forgotten in Super.

to be fair, we didn't really get any "emotional build up" for ss3 either. it was kinda just dropped out of nowhere from Goku against Fat Buu

As a Mexican guy I experienced Dragon Ball from the first episodes all the way to GT and the dub is just Beautiful, absolutely incredible, one of the good things to come out of Televisa was broadcasting this series for so long, when Goku defeated vegeta for the first time, when he turned super sayian, when perfect cell was defeated by SSJ2 Gohan, it was all you'd hear about at school, even just going for some Tacos if it was dragon ball time, and they had a TV set, you were going to watch it there for sure, such a massive hit around here, still beloved to this day and probably forever.

There were two emotional moments in the fight against Baby. First, Gokuh didnt become SS4 after having his tail pull out. He became a SS Ozaru out of control. He lost his mind. It was Pan's tears and Pan's picture of their family and friends that returned Goku's consciousness and give him the push he needed to turn SS4. That was an emotional moment. Second, after Goku defeated Baby and Trunks and Goten turned back to normal, they believed that Goku needed to kill Vegeta to get rid of Baby for good. Trunks accepted but you could see his pain, Goten hugged him, and Goku considered his course of actions silently for a few seconds. Then he shot Baby/Vegeta, but it was only to destroy his tail after which Vegeta's body returned to his original and Baby had to leave it. This moment was brief but it was also quite emotional. It's been more than 10 years since I watched GT, but those two moments stand up in my memory.

At least GT showed blood and battle damage. Unlike Super. Just Saiyan.

GT might not be loved by everyone. But to me, I love it and that ending will always be THE ending of DB for me. That ending legit made me tear up.

I would like to say something about Baby. I mean, ok, i am hella biased towards Baby, he is my favorite DB villain. I just hope you read this, Wolf. Baby might not have the best battle in the series, i agree with that, but i don't think his battle holds no emotional narrative towards both characters like you said. Goku is the last pure Saiyan in the universe besides Vegeta, and for Baby that means that he is the last remnant of the race that obliterated his home planet. Goku is the last target of Baby's unrivaled hatred, a target that wasn't probably even alive when his planet was attacked. But the thing is that to Baby, as smart as he is, as much "justice" driven as he is, he is still blinded by his hatred. It doesn't matter if Goku was never there, he shares the blood of those who were, and to him, that's all that really matters. No wonder he kinda has a Spirit Bomb, but instead, made of his hatred. The Spirit Bomb in Japan is called the GenkiDama, which can kinda be translated into something like "Positive Sphere" or something like that. Baby's ultimate move is a reflection of what he is, he is a hypocrite that conquered galaxies just like the saiyans did, justifying it as settling a score, and instead of solving problems with dialogue, he instead chose to kill and obliterate oposition, once again, just like saiyans did. His hatred is so powerful he does not need any help to make a Spirit Bomb so to speak, he can do it on his own. About Goku now. Ok, the tail thing? Yes, it is dumb. BUT: what happens later isn't. Goku faces Baby, this time believing he has got it. He has got the tail, he can beat Baby, no problem. After all he was told this would make him stronger, however that does not happen. Baby does not feel any higher power in Goku. So Goku this time is faced not with rage and despair like with Freeza, but with legitmate crippling fear and dissapointment. So many of his loved ones depend on him and he for the first time in his life, simply can't compete, he is out of tricks, out of techniques, out of strength... However, he looks at the moon and he feels something he hadn't felt in a long time. An unstoppable hunger for battle, for killing and the surging of enormous beastly power that slowly takes him over. The power of an Oozaru. Goku in this form is actually finally fighting Baby on an equal level, but is it worth it? Goku is slowly losing his humanity, he hurts not only Baby but also Pan, his dear grand-daughter. During this moment Goku is not unlike Baby, he is a monster, without anything that pushes him foward besides rage. It's only after Pan finally reaches to Goku's heart that he finally remembers. He is fighting for something more. In that moment Goku remember what actually hangs in the balance, it's the fate of everyone in the universe, his family, his friends and their freedom. That is when he finally reaches the form of something beyond a normal Super Saiyan. The Super Saiyan 4 is not like the other forms, it's the appearance and power of a monstruous beast but with the heart and motivations of a human being. Which is ironic, since Baby in this fight later turns into a Oozaru to try and compete, once again going for that simbolism. Baby might use whatever speech he want, he can talk about justice, about his people, about retribution but the truth always reveals itself. Baby is nothing but a beast, consumed by rage, alone with nothing to fight for but his own desires of a petty and non sensical revenge. Goku is driven by something more than that, because underneath the dumb, battle driven beast that Goku can be, he is more human than Baby EVER will be. Goku earned the trust and friendship of those around him with love, his naive way of being and a bit of his sense of humor. Baby forced people to stay by his side because he thought he was entitled and deserving of it, because he was too busy drunk on his wicked sense of justice. That is why in the end, Goku had everyone at his side, and Baby died alone, without a name to call and with no one to miss him. So yeah, maybe it's all the power of friendship, but i still like it a lot. If you actually read this, thanks for the attention Wolf. :)

I absolutely loved it. From the Dan-Dan opening to seeing my favourite character, Gogeta. I was young and the internet wasn't there to slap me in the face and point out all the flaws. Doesn't matter though, this show is forever etched in my kokoro.

From what I can see, from this video and from my own experience watching it, is that it makes a explanation for the unreleased ending. Cause while super has more escalation, how much escalation can you get? You reach the top of the pyramid, rivals lose meaning. His ending was amazing. The way we see Pan as an old woman accidentally seeing goku, leaving it to us as to whether it was him? Hell, vegeta had a beautiful scene accepting his place as the better father and accepting goku for being the best. The ending that was unreleased had a heartbreaking bit and some deep stuff, which the video explains wouldn't have worked for its child friendly audience. Goku being immortal was ... surprising though. Vegeta having a mustache... eh.

The thing that bothers me about SSJ4 is that it is ostensibly "taming the beast within," and yet we never actually see Goku go through any kind of story arc to lead up to this. We see him briefly lose control and then contain that animalistic strength into a human form, but it's the payoff to a character arc that doesn't exist. We should have seen Goku struggle with the fear of becoming a monster, scared that he might kill someone again like he did his grandfather. We should have seen him have to come to terms with the beast within and learn how to master it. It's unfortunate that Vegeta was possessed at the time, because as someone who knew how to control the Oozaru form he could have taught Goku more about it, have Goku learn more about his heritage.

When I was a kid, I didn't give a single f*ck about GT being bad. I freaking enjoyed and loved it as EVERY Dragon Ball episode.

It's the same problem I had with the Pokémon anime, no progression and weird restarts. First few seasons were interconnected and felt like a journey of growth. But when Ash started ditching his team every new region, they might as well changed the protagonist to match those of the games, so at least we get a believable arc. I know that anime exists just to sell merchadise but they could still make so much more with it

I love the maturity presented at the end of this video. I had the exact opposite experience with Dragon Ball growing up as a child. GT was on television when I had the same age Goku was turned back into. DBZ was on television too, but that was a "boring grown up show" I couldn't get into. GT was for me, it was beautiful, it was fun, it was amazing. The ending of GT was very possibly the first really deep emotional experience I had with television. That last episode made me go to school sobbing for Goku. I thought I could like the original DB after that, so I went after it in manga and, yup, loved it. The origin of it all, more of Kid Goku... I didn't ever rewatch DBZ after that but... maybe it's time for that now? Anyway, in short: It's not about the series itself. It's about us, our journey, and how well it fits in there. GT got sooooo many backlashes in Japan to the point that there was a rumor that GT stood for" Gomennasai Toriyama-san" meaning "I'm sorry Mr.Toriyama"

Two things to keep in mind, everyone: Taste is subjective, and what one person hates another may love. This doesn't make either of you wrong, or delusional, or imply that one of you is fair while the other isn't. It's a difference of opinion, and nothing else. Don't let someone else's dislike of something you enjoy make you feel like you are being invalidated, and don't try to invalidate others for disagreeing with you. In short: don't take it personally. No one is "right" or "wrong." Just because you love something doesn't mean you can't look at it through a critical lens and identify its flaws, and just because you are critical of something doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed. In fact, being able to identify what is good and bad about something can actually make it MORE enjoyable, and fine tuning it to be even better is way easier when you know what should change and what should stay the same.

As a kid, GT was what got me into dragonball so it was, in hindsight, a clever idea for them to make it more kid friendly because it captivated a new audience. Also, the opening music in my country was catchy as all hell, everyone from my generation knows the song from beginning to end

Goku didn't turn SSJ4 because his tail got pulled out. That was only the catalyst. He turned after he sees Pan crying in his hand. I think SSJ4 transformation is brilliant, as it pay massive homage to ape as the purest form of a Super Saiyan, and I also think Baby as a villain is underrated. He has actual legit motivation of what he's doing, not just evil or want to conquer the planet, but revenge against what Saiyans actually did, and he effectively took control of Earth and essentially achieved his goal in reviving his planet and its inhabitants. GT has many issues, but I still like it.

It honestly feels more like GT is deserving of a retelling, if you will.

I feel the same, Dragon Ball was over when Cell/Buu saga ended, now even if there was great well-written sequel to this series, it just would not be Dragon Ball anymore.

Boruto makes GT look like a masterpiece.

Regardless of what GT was, the ending of the series always felt perfect to me and I can’t for te life of me not cry watching it.

Weirdly enough the first arc of GT is what I come back to more than anything else Dragon Ball. It's just a good vibe.

What's weird is that despite all this, GT seems to have more respect for the lore and history of Toriyama's world than, well, Toriyama himself, who freely admits he writes in the moment. A lot of GT's concepts have ties to earlier parts of Z or DB in quite nice ways. The Shadow Dragons being borne of old wishes, Baby being a member of the Tuffles who were mentioned by King Kai way back in the Saiyan arc, Super 17, and then the ending sequence where Goku visits all his friends one last time, which is remarkably touching and does feel like there was some real heart behind it.

GT, while being respectfully awful, has some of the best concepts and designs in Dragon Ball history.

I remember before GT got an english dub, it was like a myth. Almost mystic. Seeing screenshots of SSJ4 Goku, Vegeta and Gogeta. I remember being really excited for it to get dubbed for the states. Then the disappointment of the first half of the series when it started dropping on VHS. I've always felt its well worth watching from the Baby arch on.

Dragon Ball GT really wasn't that bad. It's just a meme. Dragon Ball Evolution on the other hand...

Well it's pretty obvious GT was trying to be more like Dragonball, not Dragonball Z

I hope I’m not the only one who rewatches eyepatch wolf video’s because they are great background noise while I draw these characters.

Great video as usual, but I think more needed to be said about the first part of GT closely mimicking the original DB series because that is basically a story of the whole of GT - and, to an extent, Super too now. As popular as Z was, especially in the USA, the original DB was vastly successful in Japan already, and it was doing waves in Europe long before Z debuted there. Toei's plan was to capture both the original fans, the Z fans, and indeed a fresh new audience as well with a soft reboot. They brought back an old villain who used some cursed dragon balls. They recreated the Goku - Yamcha - Bulma dynamic (but without the sexual innuendos, obviously) with child Goku, Pan and Trunks. Instead of visiting small towns to find a dragon ball, they now visited foreign planets. Instead of having these small stories on Earth with minor villains and "puzzles" to solve, they did this in space. It's a giant Dragon Ball homage, which then eventually turns into a Z one. And ultimately, this is GT's biggest weakness for me. All they did is reuse ideas for a quick buck. Even Baby, as fun as it was as an arc, is just a mixture of ideas from Cell and Buu especially. A new Super Saiyan level, again. Goku goes back to ape, again. C17 is back for some reason, again. Oh, and see is Cell and Frieza in that arc, because of course. The Baby saga even rehashed the evil Vegeta plotline from the Buu saga, for good measure. GT was a purely commercial attempt with as many risks attached as possible. I think there's a lot of things to save about it, and in a vacuum it's enjoyable. But it's also true that a lot of its inconsequential plotlines, dubious development and such can be witnessed in Z as well, where from che Cell saga onwards (and the Buu one especially) it becomes clear how Toriyama and most likely the execs were chasing popularity contests and merch rather than a good story. Which explains why Cell had to be made and quickly transformed as opposed to the android saga continuing, why Gohan was built up as the new lead in the Cell saga only to be cast aside by Buu, and so on. As enjoyable and nostalgic all series of Dragon Ball are, it's very evident how over half of Z already was Toriyama dragging his foot along, trying to please fans without really having any proper idea as to where to go, instead inventing new SSJ levels (completely obliterating the point of the original concept), new transformations for villains, and relegating all side characters as time wasters before Goku comes in to save the day. GT is a continuation of this, just without even Toriyama. The results are evident, but I'd lie if I said that parts of GT aren't fun. In fact, I say most of it is solid. Except Super C17, that arc had nothing to say and was just a quick way to pull a "remember C17?" on us, with a meme level cameo by Cell and Frieza for good measure. Which, by the way, was already being done by OAVs, where these former formidable villains became slapstick comedy characters to push aside when needed, so no surprise GT followed those footsteps too.

Dragon Ball GT is the living definition of "Great concepts, poor execution." I'm not gonna say that all of it was terrible, because there were a lot of awesome things about it (Super Saiyan 4 is bad-ass) but there were a lot of bad things that kept it from being great, like Goku getting turned into a kid, the rest of the Z-Fighters becoming even more irrelevant, and the next generation kids getting completely ignored.

I think Super Saiyan 4 is one of the best designed Dragon Ball transformations.

This really does put into perspective of where Super is going. Goku coming to terms that he has plateaued in power, and the only way to get stronger is to either give up his body to an angelic force that puppets his body around, taking away all enjoyment he got from fighting, or sign up for an eternal job as the God of Destruction, limiting the fights he could have to the timetable of the gods. With Goku showing a newfound apathy when it comes to the fighting in the latest manga chapters. Where Vegeta, realizing that there are forces that are beyond his strength that could effortlessly destroy him, his home, his planet, his timeline, his entire plane of existence, and, most importantly, his family, with him taking up a quest to become strong enough to defy the will of the gods in order to protect his family at all costs.

2022 comment here, I think it’s strange going back to this video because a lot of the problems he brings up in regards to the fights can be applied to the recent fights in the dbs manga. In the granolah arc there’s really no story or message that’s being told in the fights, at least not with gas. It just, “here’s a new enemy, Goku and vegeta have to beat him up”, and there’s really nothing getting us invested in what the fight means.

Was GT bad? Of course. Did it have some pretty cool moments? Hell yeah.

I will say this much about GT, "Dan Dan Kokoro Hikareteku" is probably my favorite opening in the DB series.

You gotta be honest, "I don't wanna be reminded of that face" was funny as hell.

imagine if Babys story had some personal stakes, imagine if it was a story of hatred and revenge, baby is quite literally a child born to fulfill his fathers grudge, you could give Vegeta personal stakes by revealing one of his earliest missions was to take part in the genocide, or at least the clean up of the stragglers, his past come back to haunt him, and also have baby posses Goku instead of Vegeta was the one to fight him, and when he beats him down instead of finishing him he tells him to get back up, baby just gets angrier taking this as Vegeta toying with him and it repeats, Vegeta keeps beating him down but refusing to finish him, over and over till Baby can no longer muster any more rage and just gives up, laying there sobbing for a planet and people he lost, apologizing for his failure to avenge them, Vegeta of course knows that feeling all to well, he offers him a hand to help sit him up, the same mercy and second chance Goku offered Vegeta so long ago, the same mercy offered to so many villains to prideful to take it, and he talks to him explains how alike they truly are, the loss of planet Vegeta, the shattering of his pride, and rebuilding his life better and happier then he ever had perceiving revenge and carnage and suggests Baby gives it a try, before kneeling to him and saying that though he can not let Baby harm earth , he would happily give his own life, for both the crimes he committed and as its prince accepting responsibility for the crimes of the entire Saiyan race, and Baby of course takes Vegetas words to heart and refuses, it dident feel right anymore, this was not the vile egotistical prince he sought revenge on, he exits his possessed body and chooses to live on earth, to see what so great about this little ball of dirt that made the cruel prideful prince he remembered become so humble and kind plus it would allow "baby" to become a power up as he can attach himself to the heroes when needed, one earned threw emotional growth rather then physical

I really love GT for what it was a "Dragon Ball" tribute. The ending where krilin and goku fight on the beach is one of the most "comes full circle" ending I've ever watch. To these days I still considers GT as one of the most satisfying ending ever.

I'll be honest, I loved DBZ but I feel that after the Namek/Frieza saga, each new saga got progressively weaker than the last. So for me GT fit the trajectory the show was going, even if the nose dive was more drastic than it had ever been in DBZ.

I liked the first part of GT, It really made me happy because i started watching DB while DBZ Kai was airing, like right before trunks comes in. I loved seeing the old goku because i had basically just seen DB and cried about Eighter, It was like a continuation of the DB with elements of Z.

Lets be real though SSJ4 is way cooler than Super Saiyan Blue

I've said it before, I've said a million times, and I'll say it again. Dragon Ball GT. Great concepts. Terrible execution.

I had a lot of hope for Pan going into GT. A ridiculous amount of hope, to be honest. I thought she would be a cool character, with a badass character arc, perhaps like a fusion between Videl, and Gohan. Being spunky like Videl initially was, and a smart and strong fighter like Gohan was. Perhaps mixed in with a bit of Goku’s goofiness. I honestly have no idea why I hoped for that, as 18 was pretty much the only decent female DBZ fighter, and even she got sidelined. Trunks also sucked as a character in GT. I think for him, they should’ve made him similar to Future Trunks, but with a slightly more bratty attitude, as that would be realistic as he grew up with two very stubborn and selfish parents, who’d probably rub off on him, at least a little. While I don’t mind Bulla and Maron being side characters who don’t fight, Pan and Trunks were major let-downs. Hopefully, dragon ball super redeems them, but there’s no promises.

GT fans now a days hate on DBS because Z fans did not like GT but the problem with their biased hate towards Super is that the DBS manga at least has a solid arc in comparison to any GT arc. Better build ups, more exploration and better use of established lore within the franchise

I still remember watching the very last episode of GT ( didn't know it would actually be the last) I saw "The End" pop up after the episode ended, and my heart sunk and I sat there for like 10 minutes thinking," is this really the end? This is a joke right?" I felt crushed that my favorite show finally ended. As years went by i realized it really was over At the end of the day though GT wasn'tnt THAT bad, for instance it really made saiyans feel like saiyans again by bringing back his tail, thats just one of many there's a lot of elements people missed but GT really stuck to the Lore of the series, way more then what Dragon ball super does And the final boss being all the dragons was genius if you really think about it The one thing that always got them out of trouble for years and years was now the thing that could destroy them all

bro your videos about dbz and growing up are so true to me that while watching and listening i was trying not to tear up. this show was so much to me growing up i want to go back to it but just feel im past the point of returning, while it is no longer what i need, dbz made me who i am today.

You seem to be forgetting that the regrowth of Goku’s tail was not for him to reach SS4. It was so his ki levels could stay stable in Super Saiyan 3. The unexpected ascension in Super Saiyan 4 was something no one saw coming.

I think the thing about GT that stung the most was the complete and final nullification of Gohan as a central character. Basically, Goku was more popular so let's just change him back to a younger form and do it all over again. It sucks even though I don't like Gohan's basic character traits Gohan could have been something more than a whining powerhouse of a brat if they would have continued on with him beyond Cell and Buu. But, Goku stayed in the limelight and Gohan was basically brushed aside to remain as useless as the other Z fighters.

The last episode of GT made viewers love, admire, and respect the Dragon Ball franchise as a whole from day 1. It was perfect how Goku last visited all his friends then became one with the Dragon before he left Earth. His job was finally done, and I loved how they tied events from Dragon Ball and Z in the credits then showing him reappear in the stands of the tournament to watch his descendant and Vegeta's fight one another repeating Goku and Vegeta's rivalry. It was a great ending to our favorite franchise.

Back when I used to watch a lot of classic anime with my brothers, I never realized when watching DB and DBZ that it was a progression of struggle (maybe it was because I saw Z first, then DB six years later) but realizing that epiphany makes me appreciate battle stories a lot more, which is also why I enjoy series like HxH and Ippo so much. They resonate deeply with me, especially when I realize there's things you can struggle towards and you won't end up winning every battle.

I recently watched the whole 64 and hey,it was a good time. I always heard people talk about GT and i fell to young,so i (probably ilegally) went into a website and in a 1 month span finished it,also writing the story by hand with detail so that i don’t get lost/want to look at it in the future. Overall,i agree with you,the first quarter of GT is pretty much specifically for children,with a few battles here and there,and then the big fights didn’t carry as much as they did in dbz,but it was still dragonball,and the culmination was not a letdown for me.Anyways,awesome video👍.

I feel another issue that compounded GT was something that had already set in by the end of Z, we had hit a peek of the stakes, the struggles and what to expect from the formula/progression of the story and characters. Even within the Buu saga the cracks were showing and even as a kid it just felt like we were going from one event to the other with little overall thought (which we know was somewhat true with how villains were getting introduced like the androids back in the Android/Cell sagas). By the end of Z, at least for me, I felt like we had saw the end of Goku's journey but here we were back again with him as protag and I never really felt like we saw any new insights, growth or retrospective on his character going forward so it just becomes a chore to watch. I believe, much like Ash Ketchum, it was a case that Goku was still super popular and in demand so plans changed to keep Goku in the spotlight (or if someone could confirm this is an apocryphal story I'd appreciate that) so I get why but maaaan GT just feels like so much filler after the story was well and truly done with so many potentially interesting characters that could've taken the mantle never given a shot.

I disagree with one thing. Baby turned all Goku's friends against him, Goku is part of a race that destroyed Baby's creators. There is a personal conflict betwean those characters

Dragonball Z ends with Gohan as an adult living upto the legacy of Goku. *Dragonball GT: **_Goten's_** Tale.* With the passing of time, the series revolves around significant character development for Goten & Trunks, alongside a young Pan. *Dragonball: Super* Gohan now being the one humbled by encountering Beerus. Vegeta, the returning hero to defeat the revived Frieza and Goku returns via Otherworld being entered into the Tournament of Power.

I liked dragon ball GT :( (second half more so) I thought the ss4 transformations were awesome The Saiyans got their tails back! I like the idea of Sayians getting stronger because of their tails. Its in their blood, its what they ARE. The tail makes them transform. It was a call back to the original Dragon ball and early DBZ about the giant apes. I prefer SS4 and their tails compared to Super Saiyan God and Blue. I actually think God and Blue is silly. They just change their hair colour and their eyes. Its not impressive. SS3 made Goku more ape like, more primal. SS4 makes them even further into a primal beast. IT MAKE SENSE.

Great video and very detailed as to why people hated on it so much. Alot of other videos just bash it for the sake of bashing but you see the good in it. I personally didnt mind watching GT when I was younger. It definately felt different but there was literally no other dragonball z media out there at the time. Dbgt filled that void even if it lacked a lot of the longevity things that made Z so legendary

I don't get how the lack of buildup for super saiyan 4 is surprising when they brought SSGSS literally out of thin air with nothing in between 💀

I loved the Brazilian op song. It's seriously heartwarming and marked part of my infancy, I know all the words till today.

I really expected a sequel for dragon Ball gt where they show Goku junior, only to find out it's not cannon

Damn i had honestly forgotten about GT for the longest time ever but now that I've seen some scenes again my child hood came rushing back again. I do remember it being a bit childish but then gain so was the original Dragon Ball. What hits me now is the feeling of emptiness I got when the final scenes of GT were playing out knowing that it was "over". I think that's subconsciously I decided that dragon ball super wasn't for me.
