I had a fun time with this game when it came out, but definitely missed the fandom boat as a college kid who wasn't in the majority demographic. Watching you go through all of these fan projects and talking about their popularity actually left me in awe. Like what an insane, incredible thing that this story spoke to so many kids and inspired so much creativity in them. Like how many people were driven to create, to try new things and who watched their art spread to the equivalent population of a small country? It's amazing. Heck even the edgelord and cringe content are just part of our growth from confused kids into adults living in a complicated world. This was a wild ride from start to finish.

I hate this part for all the lies they try to feed us through inner monologues before Joylene escapes the prison. Like when she reminisce about all the times she visited Weather and Anastasia in the room, which never happened, because after the first visit weather got into infirmary until Joylene escaped. I didn't mind characters and story overall, but for some reason that one thing really pissed me off. Also I dropped it 4 episodes before part 6 ended.

It's so silly but it plays it straight the entire time. There aren't really villains, just opponents. Yujiro is by no means a good dude but he is more of a force of nature than truly evil. I love baki because you can root for anyone. It's one of the only shows out there that really captures the feel of watching a sport, even if it's frequently goofy as all hell. Just wondering what on earth could possibly happen next is entertainment enough to keep my eyes glued to the screen. Bennet the sage explains it in a way that pairs with your dbz comparison well, "Its the act of fighting, not the reason for it"

I laughed at the Dad joke, but felt bad for laughing after hearing about his operation, then came a feeling of confusion whether to laugh that he still made the joke or not. It was an 'out of body' experience that fit perfectly with the episode

The description you make of reading about vermis and not understanding what kind of game it is or how does it play, reminds me of when I was a child and read a guide about phantasy star that had just a few screenshots. The only games I played at that age were arcade games: beat em ups, shooters, run and guns, that sort of thing. I couldn't grasp this game in wich you talked to people, buy and sell objects and traveled a whole world, and apparently took days to beat. It was a complete mistery to me and I was quite obsessed with imagining how that was supposed to play. I didn't play an RPG until several years later with final fantasy 7.
