This so much. It - like many other aspects of Dragonball - gets glossed over so much. Krillen, a comedic side character, the butt of many jokes, short, weak, not particularly handsome, doesn't have a nose, died multiple times, didn't de-activate the androids when he could. A loser, many would conclude, ends up with a former 'villan' who is arguable _the_ hottest chick in the series, who's also thousands of times stronger than he is. When/where else/how often does something like this happen in anime? Such an unconventional and implausible pairing. It's always harems and shit nowadays, the stereotypical oh so great mc hooking up with the blatantly hottest prettiest girl around. Dragonball man.

Krillin has gotten a recent surge in appreciation. Well deserved, too. Krillin was there since OG Dragon Ball and has consistently been funny, loyal and courageous despite all the shit they face. Also, the dude marries 18, has a kid with her and seemingly has the most stable relationship besides Gohan and Videl. How is he NOT the most beloved character besides Goku and Vegeta after all that!? LOL

Hell yeah love krillin and DBS gave him one of the best episodes and the lost respect he needed even though he was the first one to lose on Team universe 7 😅

Krillin was consistently my favorite character to watch in OG Dragon Ball, followed by Roshi and then Goku. It's a shame that he gets so ridiculously outclassed, because he really is an excellent fighter.

kinda why I liked that fight to be honest...if goku just tied with him I would never care about that fight but up to that moment it was the biggest battle of the series truly as others had to help which we saw briefly vs raditz but only piccolo helped there...the frieza stuff also allows some teamwork but it works caus eit is just one on one again for the fate of the world...not sure how you top that and while the ideas after are interesting they don't really do much with it so the show feels lamer the more it goes on besides the whole goku gohan dynamic which was done well but then immediately thrown aside in the buu arc

100% agree. The first time I saw goku start to cry and breakdown when he realized it was his grandpa, I lost it, too. Especially when he says in the english version "I looked for you everywhere!" It makes you think about those first days/weeks that Grandpa Gohan died, and Goku was a kid there just thinking his Grandpa went away for a bit, and not understanding he was gone forever. 30 years later, the only other Dragon Ball moment to ever choke me up was in Dragon Ball Super whenever Gohan realized that Trunks had come to him to ask for help in his future, but Trunks realized Gohan had a family and was happy, so he decided to leave that alone. Then when Trunks is leaving with Mai to go back to a different time line, Gohan rushes there as quick as he can to tell Trunks to be well, and Trunks sees his master Gohan again for the first time since he died in his own timeline, and he breaks down a little. It hit me hard.

attacking weakness isnt a character. he has about the same personality and motivation as the androids (they might have more than him actually). now if they fleshed out his desperation for perfection then he'd have character, but as Cell stands he's more of a theme or obstacle than an actual character. most dbz villains didnt have an actual character. unless you count vegeta. zamasu is probably the villain that has been given the most amount of depth ironically considering super is pretty average compared to Z

Cell not being a "character" actually makes his character even ebtter by correlating to the main theme of his character. I don't know why him not necessarily being a "character" means that Zamasu gives the most amount of "depth" when he literally has no real dynamics with any character and his character felt rushed if anything. The only thing he has is a goal but as I said there was no real substance to it and no redeeming qualities that made his "goal" understandable to say the least. His hypocrisy was so forced and again just lackluster so I really would love to see you elaborate on how his character had depth, let alone more than Cell.

Super is just kind of a weak series in general that rehashes a lot of stuff they already did so they didnt execute it well. you trying to tell me Cell's lack of character makes that technically a character in and of itself is a terrible argument. Z is a better put together show than Super, and Cell has more iconic moments, but when im talking about what character has more depth, im talking about it from a storytelling/narrative view, and not just what i like more.

@@lightninginqc7837 Cell is not a deep character and most Dragon Ball characters arent, besides Vegeta. and that goes double for villains. and you guys might be conflating being a compelling villain with being a deep one. just because a villain serves as an interesting foil, or is good at being a villain/menace does not mean a villain is deep. Frieza is one of the best villains made in an anime, but there is no depth to him. hes a tyrant that runs a pirate org/slash empire that sells land to other buyers. he was born privaleged and went unchallenged till goku came along, and thats pretty much it. it is interesting that he is essentially the catalyst of the beginning of the series, but thats not the same thing as the character itself being deep. and Cell is in the same boat. he is a parasite with a conscious, he has the same goals as a virus, except he can think. his motivation for perfection is not played with in any interesting way, and is just another scary villain that needs to be stopped lke every other villain in Z.

@@Ash_10005 to include Kaioken as base is a bit misleading though, as it takes such a toll on the body, and is a technique Goku has to properly concentrate to use. Similarly to how Piccolo wasn't as strong as Raditz, yet managed to kill him with the Makankosappo by concentrating his ki, base Goku wasn't as strong as base Vegeta, but managed to amplify his ki for a short while to do some damage.

@@plasticsand9370 Well, (Perfect) Cell is more begging for attention and he likes to be out in the open while Frieza just wants to rule the universe while sitting in his chair while in his 1st form. Cell likes to be more direct and open. I would also state that compared to Frieza, Cell is calmer and more laid back. Frieza wanted immortality and wanted to rule the universe forever while Cell just wanted to test his perfect powers and prove to everyone that he is the most powerful creature in the universe by doing the damage himself. Also, Cell was willing to kill himself if it meant also blowing up the planet and everyone on it just so Gohan, Goku, and everyone else died along with him, and not even Frieza would do that. Frieza destroyed Namek and felt content with it because he knew he could survive in space. He knew it was still possible for him to survive, while Cell had no idea he would live and was okay with dying if it meant the others died with him. That shows me Cell is more daring than Frieza and is willing to take more risks. Also, unlike Cell, Frieza doesn't care about fighting strong warriors, and he doesn't have a thrill for battle like Cell does. Frieza does love torture, but torture and battle are different things. He just doesn't want people getting in his way. Frieza didn't try to force Goku to get mad and get stronger by doing so like Cell did with Gohan.

Cosmonaut variety asked what traits Dabura has and I listed just that Based on what we see in the story. Even though I’m aware it could all be babidi mind control. But regardless we see those traits of him doing the short time we see him. Also the traits I listed could be seen in Dragon ball heroes and Xenoverse so it’s not all Babidi control however not everyone knows about that. For example he tries to avenge his sister towa in the game which would make him loyal and he was also loyal to babidi with warning him about Majin Buu’s betrayal. Well mannered could be a trait of Dabura as well since he complimented Goku Gohan and Vegeta. I really like Dabura so that’s why I defend his character even though he was wasted.

Yeah. At the end of the Namek Saga, all you have is Goku at Super Saiyan. Not saying that wasn’t the best moment in the entire series, but what about Gohan? Where’s his realization as a character? And Piccolo fusing with Kami? And without the Cell Saga, you don’t get Trunks, one of the best characters in the entire franchise.

Yea I recently watched the original z but not the Kai version. So there was all the filler, and bro. The frieza arc is paced so slowly. It was borderline unwatchable during some of the later fights.

No, Goku's Super Saiyan transformation was justified too. Goku arguably loves Krillin more than he loves his own family, so ofc he would fly off the wall at Krillin's death.

The Buu saga is easily the weakest of the three main arcs. It feels the most, "because fuck it!" out of all of them.

Gohan was fighting with the adult warriors since the Saiyan Saga though.

No the entire point of the cell arc was goku realizing that he shouldn't be forcing gohan to fight when he clearly doesn't want to. I would argue this shock would have been good if goku fully relying on gohan wasn't comeptley out of character to begin with. Goku is all about pushing his limits and becoming stronger and seeing as he could easily have reached super sayain2 and he basically choose not to so gohan would have fought cell is just such a huge change in goku's character to the point where it's not believable. Now the majin buu saga did this change much better where goku could have finished off majin buu while he was playing around but instead choose to rely on the kids because goku doesn't stop training or prevent himself from becoming stronger to pass down the shield on too them. However this entire scene is ruined by the fact that he learned trying to force a 9 year old to fight was stupid . At least this one was slightly less stupid as it was 2 7 year olds that actually wanted to fight but it contradicts the lesson he was supposedly have learn in the cell saga. At least the majin buu saga doesn't end contrdacting the lesson goku learned in cell saga with gotenks actually winning like gohan in the cell saga did and with goku actually having to finish it.

Goku could have easily trained and surpass cell but instead try and forced into his son who never wanted to fight. He fought because he had to but in the cell saga he didn't have to. Goku could have just as easily trained with vegeta and the training for him would have been far more effective. Picclo even tells goku he was stupid for doing so and the entire arc for goku was that he shouldn't have done it and gohan struggling for his father mistake. Than comes buu arc and throws that character development out the window when goku says ah let the kids do it. I just find it funny that it threw that character development away but did the character development better as in this one goku entrusted it to both goten and trunks instead of one 9 year old and both goten and trunks unlike gohan didn't like fighting. They fail as a result of goku trying to pass the flame to early and as a result goku has to come in and finished off the main villain instead of entrusting the world into underage kids that shouldn't be fighting these monsters in the first place. I mean its even more in goku's character than the cell arc because goku didn't limit his own growth in power like he did in cell which is just character assaitantion as goku would never do that.

Canon manga wise Cell pretty much gave up and lost control of himself after Gohan punched him like twice which is what I hate the most about his character, just a big bully with no fight and grit. Sure Vegeta and Frieza were all bullies but at least they pushed on until the very end. As great as the story was during Cell arc, his character and his arc is played out by OP power ups. Once a character get a power boost, they stormed everybody else. Beside the ending point that is the Kamehameha battle, I don’t think there was an even fight the entire arc beside minor fights like Piccolo vs Cell or 17 vs Piccolo, either Z fighters stomped Cell or Cell stomped the Z fighters, there was that one Goku vs Cell fight but its only a build up for Gohan vs Cell. In Saiyan saga, there was Goku vs Vegeta and then Krillin, Gohan, Goku collective effort against Vegeta. And Frieza saga there was Goku and everybody vs Frieza and then SSJ Goku vs Frieza. Buu saga there were Gotenks vs Super Buu, Goku vs Kid Buu and then pretty much everyone against Kid Buu.

@@onemore512 i hated Cell in the anime, but Cell in DBZA is amazing. The Cell Saga/Arc(ep32-60) contains everything the show has and is better than it(30 Years of hindsight does that). You could watch DBZA and any English dub and details are basically the same and you woild be caught up in the same way DBZA does Cell Perfect by his ending. Unlike the original where he thought he couldn't die because he was perfect, in DBZA, he accepted it. He didn't care. Because he travelled each and every highway. But more.Much more than that. He did it his own way. He achieved his perfection and got the fight he wanted,, he wanted nothing more. The perfect life for him

I know the buu saga isn’t the best, but for me it felt like it finally wrapped up vegetas character arc. With him trying to be evil but realising it’s not what he wants, he even fuses with one of the people he hates most and of course the ending of him finally swallowing his pride and respecting goku for being better than him. But super kinda messed it all up as there was no where really to go with vegetas character afterwords.

And this is how Goku actually encourage a fight between cell and Gohan as well, he knew that cell is a part of him, and he knows that he has an itching desire to fight rediculuosly strong opponent to test his own ability. He kept on about how Gohan is gonna beat cell, he even go as far as to give cell a senzu bean to reclaim his strength. Cell in my opinion is the Z fighters fighting against the flawed versions of their selves, so Goku doing this was almost like he was fighting himself and that was the point where cell had actually started to loose, because he accepted the challenge,and ironic enough,Goku learned a lot about himself through cell, but it wasn't him alone, vegeta ,krillin ,picollo , Gohan being one of the main ones, all learnt something about themselves. That's why I love the Android saga because in terms of story, it's just as good as the namek saga, maybe not in terms of villains, but in terms of character writing,it's solid there as well, but I agree with what they said about the namek saga as well.

Mega Wave The Saiyan Saga as a whole was just amazing. It had superb character development, great writing, and several memorable moments. It’s easily one of DB’s greatest sagas !!

I love how they had a lack of fighters in the Frieza saga, it just shows how you gotta rely on the weaker/other fighters to go exploring. Meanwhile in the cell saga, everyone is alive and the weaker fighters now stay in the back of the line....rip yamcha

I've always felt that the Ginyu Force was a character in and of itself, since we don't spend that much time with individual members. They do deserve some love tho', not only their theatrical posing added to the humour of the show, their wicked sense of honor and interesting gimmicks really made the show shine.

Granted, neither of them were really going all out, but Goku was clearly winning that one, while Gohan couldn't even come close to that.

Apparently Naruto and Jiraiya spent the time skip perving on girls trying to bathe while Sasuke was the only one actually training. Naruto even has a monologue in the first arc of Shippuden where he says he spent three years training and nothing has changed because not only is Sasuke still gone he's lost Gaara to the Akatsuki as well

How. When naruto was cheating through the rasengan, people complained he progressed too quickly for someone not gifted. When he comes back from the time skip and still shows that he needs to cheat the technique even though it’s much improved, people are still mad because he didn’t master it. Pick a fucking side.

i think the reason Naruto started out as kids and had a timeskip was to just improve the skills quickly so they could fight the Akatsuki closer and not be wiped out so easily...a group that was clear filler forced by toei and shonnen jump on kishi to continue the series so it ran longer..notice how they don't exist prior to over 100 chapters into the story..i wonder why...oh cause their irrelevant fodder who don't add much to the story as a group...but yeah it needed a timeskip..it didn't really need a second but it had that too..smdh..which i hate @@Vohalika

yeah but it still was just death, it wasnt almost gore like some of the kills in z were, sure Krillin was killed in db but he wasnt exploded into a thousand pieces or killed by a ki blast leaving a massive hole on his chest xd (yes goku was left with a big hole in his fight with Piccolo but he did survive, unlike his fight against Raditz).

I mean sure you could say the animation is trash, (because of the schedule) You could say some fights last too long, and the writing is shit and so is most if not all the characters, the fights are mainly copy and paste, theirs barely any unique fighting styles, and a lot of things BUT it is still enjoyable 😊

@@zizoushifty1483 my running theory is that a saian having a child with a human (cause it wouldn't make sense otherwise or the whole race would have been swole af) makes the baby have a base power level of whatever the saian was, which becomes the baseline and only goes up with aging. Hence why Gohan was stronger than goku, and goten and trunks were stronger than them all.

Piccolo has a mini arc in the Saiyan Saga and that's it. All of his other development is rushed and forced to go along with whatever roll Toriyama wants Piccolo to take. At least Vegeta still seems like the same person at the end of his character arc.

He actually puts his pride away to save the Earth. The person is the same. His character has changed.

Not really rushed. He kidnapped Gohan to be evil, after killing the only two people who were a threat to him on earth. Gohan was sensitive 4 year old and grew to protect him because piccollo was a protective 7 year old. Where he took a kid to destroy Earth, the kid made him protect Earth.

@Zer0dog Goku vs Vegeta was a great fight Goku vs Freeza was like every fight before it, but with horrible pacing that drags out all meaning it tried to convey before Trunks vs Freeza was basically your typical fight where the guy solos powerful villain after the villain either beats everyone or is too strong for others to fight, this was already done better in Goku vs Drum and lacks the creativity and impact of Goku vs Nappa Gohan vs Cell was carried off of artificial tension and a death that shouldn't even have affected Gohan the way it did, the fight itself drags and consists of either Cell kicking Gohans ass or Gohan kicking Cells ass, there is no variety in what each character does, it looks and feels the same as past fights, this is meant to be fight with barely any fight which focused more on the character's struggles while making the hits that count more impactful which was done better with Goku vs King Piccolo, Gon vs Pitou, and All Might vs All for One Vegito vs Super Buu also was a dragged out fight with a gag that got less and less funny every time it was used, also the fact Vegito as a concept erased whatever tension was left in the series Goku and Vegeta vs Kid Buu is the same shit, same choreography, same explosions, same sized beams, drags on forever, and no tension whatsoever, some good stuff happen like Mr. Satan and Vegeta admitting Goku was better (but that entire moment was ruined when he reverted back to his old self in Super)

If anything just watch the World Tournament fights in the show. They’re not as laser beamy as Z but they’re all so great

The ending of the Cell arc is a MUCH better ending than the Frieza one. The cell arc was all about family and essentially fighting one's self (since Cell was an amalgamation of the z fighters). It's a poetic ending that passes the torch to the next generation. Gohan will be earth's protector with Trunks coming up under him the way Goku did with his dad. Vegeta learns to love his family, Goku finally allows himself to pass on, Trunks goes to his future and rights the wrongs, and Gohan, the most powerful living sayian, is a child who's only gonna grow from there. Would have been a great ending

Frieza saga is the best Z saga but Cell saga ending really leaves you completely satisfied, especially watching Goku dying and Gohan, angry and blameful, taking the torch and becoming the strongest ever. So dramatic, so great. Unfortunately Cell saga had a very boring plot

@@iansmart4158 I think it comes across as organic to western fans because it fits a particular mold that Hollywood tends to follow, as well as the dub trying to re-frame this series as a superhero story where these characters take on a mantle to protect the Earth (even though it's more like they're just looking for greater battles and that the Earth gets saved as a consequence and because it's their home), but it wasn't actually something set up that way. In a scene right before his battle with Cell, it's re-established that Gohan still wishes to become a scholar when he gets older rather than continue fighting, and that he must deal with Cell if he can follow through with his aspirations. It was never about passing a torch. Toriyama only teased with that idea later on in the middle of the Boo arc, only to back away from it after realizing that Gohan, a character who was born special and owes most of his strength to his innate powers being drawn out with ease, doesn't really work as a main protagonist of a Chinese wuxia-inspired series about bettering yourself through hard work (worth noting that fans complaining had nothing to do with it, and was just old magazine/internet rumors).

@@ace_wash8363 Freeza v Goku is terribly pased in the original anime, regardless of how fast they were going. The "5 minutes" line works much better in Kai and the manga because, while more than 5 minutes may still be passing, it doesn't feel like a complete chore to get through. Kai does have its fair share of issues though, but if you're a dubbie, most of them are worth it from what I can tell.

Well, the fight in the original is better overall, and it's longer. Kai may be more faithful to the manga and have better pacing, but the fight itself isn't as good as the one in the original.

Toei treaded the DBZ Charakters better whan Torijama. In the Manga Lunch just dissapeared, in the Anime, she leaves Tien, after he startet too be annoyed about her. Dabura had a very funny change of heard. Garlick Junior give Kami some streamtime and give him some dignity back, and remembers us about the Demon thing. Also it give Gohan and Kuririn some Battles too show of they owne strenge.

a big part of what makes the freeza arc so important is how it connects gokus history and piccolos aka the 2 strongest and important characters by the end of the first part of the manga ..goku becomes the ssj avenging his people on piccolos home planet vs the tyrant who started this show after finding balls to wish people back to life and because piccolo sacrificed himself all of this was possible..its brilliant...then we get time travel and robots and created man children and im like okay...wtf happened to this smart series..its like it was written for young kids again after getting so dark earlier...too many plotholes to count.....
