Dragon Crystal is a roguelike RPG released in the early 1990's for the Sega Master System and Game Gear platforms.
The hero of the story stumbles across a crystal ball in an antiques shop. Upon gazing into the crystal ball, he is sucked into another dimension and loses consciousness. Upon waking, our hero finds himself in the middle of a forest, with a large dragons egg
behind him.
The objective of the game is navigate thirty labyrinthine levels to escape the curse of the Dragon Crystal and to return to your own time.
Each level is obscured by fog and requires careful exploration to uncover the exit. Walking around the level will remove the fog and reveal rooms containing loot, as well as monsters.
Although the game appears to be real-time, it is actually turn based. For each action you perform, the enemy can also perform an action. This introduces a level of strategy to the combat; finding the best place and anticipating enemy movement patterns is vital, especially in the later levels where enemies do not only do considerably more damage, but they can ruin your armour and weapons too.
Various weapons and power-ups can be collected, but many of these remain unidentified until you use (or throw) them. This will reveal the true nature of the item; it could be beneficial, but it could also be cursed! The colour codes assigned to the items are randomised each time you play, so each game is a unique experience.
Certain weapons do more damage to specific types of enemies, regardless of their base power rating. For example, the Dragonblade out-damages the Laserblade, despite almost thirty power points difference; it's important to maintain a stock of each weapon type to best deal with the various enemies that inhabit the levels.
The player must maintain a stock of food to provide sustenance on his travels. Food will heal injuries over time, but running out will result in the hero starving to death and losing health.
In the event that you lose all your health, it's possible to pay to continue by using the money that you collect within the dungeon. Each time you continue costs successively more cash until you reach the point where you simply don't have enough cash to go on.
Dragon Crystal is probably the first role-playing game that I'd actually played and I was extremely impressed by it. The fact that the levels, equipment and layouts are randomised each time give the game unparalleled replay value.
The graphics look great. The way the hero changes outfits depending on the armour he is wearing is a nice touch, as is the different weapon colours. The game music is extremely repetitive, but isn't too terrible.
Surprisingly, the dragon that follows you around serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever. It does occupy space within the game world, so can prevent enemies attacking you from behind, but little else; I suppose it's just there to look cool.
I never managed to beat the game and I must admit that I was disappointed with the ending. I was expecting a massive boss of epic proportions, especially given just how tough some of the enemies are in the later levels.
Ultimately, Dragon Crystal is a great little dungeoneering game that's still fun to play today. Just remember to pack your trusty Hardbreaker and Bless Book before venturing boldly forth...

My older brothers actually played this game with me, it was addicting. We’d all play this at different times (my older brother would take this with him at his night job in a 7/11 while I was asleep and my 2nd oldest would play this at his day job at electronic boutique while I was at school) always advancing and we’d just continue were the last left off. When we finally got to the dragon, we all agreed to wait until the weekend when we’d all be present. It took awhile but It was extremely satisfying to beat this game as a team, all huddled around this tiny ass game gear screen as it was like big screen tv. We were hardcore gamers in the 80’s and 90’s and shared a lot great gaming memories on multiple consoles and in the arcades. Damn I miss those times, our childhood ruled!

because the levels were randomized there were literally levels where you couldn't escape. or you'd be boxed in by high powered enemies that killed you immediately.

this was my sister's first ever game for her Game Gear, I had an Atari Lynx. We never beat it as kids, but I finally did when re-playing it in my late teens. An excellent RPG, really showing how versatile the Game Gear could be, although I wish some things could be better explained, like the dragon that follows you but does nothing, and what happens when you do escape the crystal. One thing many players get wrong is grabbing every food item as soon as they see it, and then running out of food later. The hero can't have more than 99 food points, and meat gives 50 points! Check your food count before grabbing food on the ground, and if you have lots, leave the food on the ground until later, like just before you are ready to exit a level. I found a glitch, where if you use a reshape rod (turn an enemy into another) on the last level, the game will crash, as only dragons are supposed to appear on the last level. Use or discard reshape rods on level 29 or earlier!

I remember the frustration getting to the higher levels then my amazing sword turning to a dagger and i didnt I didnt have another sword anywhere near the power so i was doomed! Ah the sweetness and the bitterness of this neatly constructed rogue game. At 10 years old it saved me a lot of boredom but i wish i could have had a 'save state' feature like the emulators lol.

Very similar to Fatal Labyrinth on the Mega Drive, released at about the same time. I didn't get very far at Dragon Crystal when I borrowed back in '94, but I finally completed Fatal Labyrinth a couple of weeks ago after buying/downloading it from Steam, with a lot of help from "Quick Save" on the emulator.

You're nuts for using the Death Blade given you take damage every time you hit something with it. For most of your late-game you were using that over a weapon that was only a few points lower. But grats on the clear regardless!

@@AL82RetrogamingLongplays Aww that's a bummer. What's the point of having a dragon if you can't use it in some way? Lol It would've been cool if it shot a fireball or something. You basically abandon it after you return back to your own world, which is kinda a sad bit.

This game is terrible, it's nothing but luck. There's no skill involved, no way to get health back, no decisions to make, just run into the enemies and hope you do more damage and don't die. He refilled his health somehow between the first and second floors but I can't tell how, as far as I can tell there are no healing items and it doesn't even fill your health when you level up. You might as well just look at pictures of forests and mythical creatures while you flip a coin, giving yourself a point for each Heads that comes up and deciding that three Tails in a row means the game is over. It's not early enough to get away with it, either, these were standard things in NES rpg's. And it really makes me mad that food isn't health, when the game so sorely needs common health restoring pickups. This game turned me off of rpg's until Chrono Trigger came out, because I thought they were all this bad.

Almost looks fun, but the combat plays like an rpg, without cutting out to another scene. It'd be a totally different game, but if it played just like Zelda, I don't think anyone would complain. Anyone play 'Neutopia'? Played it for the first time last year, and it is almost as good as Zelda. Just not quite as good, being a Zelda rip-off.
