Cynthia Tidler, a University of Wisconsin-Madison, Master of Fine Arts graduate from 2015, was a student in my book arts class. Cindy had written a creation story for her folklore class and wanted to create a unique book. As she searched for an appropriate book structure, she learned about the Dragon Scale binding. This style of binding was popular in China around 650 A.D. While she was not able to find many examples to use for reference, the book structure was very appealing to her. The structure allows the viewer to turn individual pages and then roll it into a scroll. Her book combined her panoramic drawing with the text that she wrote.
Since the making of her book, examples of this binding can be found if you search on the internet. We hope you enjoy this how-to video.

I watched your video and thought I would try to make a book with only 8 folios. My first attempt went disastrously wrong, glue everywhere and all the wrong bits glued together. Straight into the recycling bin! However my second attempt is a success. It was lot easier to complete each individual page with it's black hinge and then attach them to the backing card one by one rather then building each one and attaching it and getting covered in glue. My backing card was long enough that I folded it over to make a cover. I'm happy with it. I used black poster card from the local dollar store!

Dragon Scale Binding Book was a reserve for the Emperor in Tang Dynasty. Amazing art and technique. Check out Xiaodong Zhang's work.

Seems that bookbinding and paper arts thrive during a pandemic - busy teaching lots of Zoom classes, soon to start in person classes.

The success of this binding is dependent on the type of paper and low-moisture adhesive you use. Can you share these details?

Thank you for showing us the bones behind this unique and historical binding. I have a couple of questions. Since this book requires a number of pages would it have made more sense to create the pages glued to the hinge first and then glueing them to the back board? And since there are so many pages to be created would a jig be useful to make sure that the folio and hinge are lined up? Again, thank you, for showing how this book is bound. I had seen it on another youtube channel and was trying to figure out how to bind this.

Hello and thanks for writing. In the video, I wanted to illustrate the way that my student made the book. We had never seen any tutorials on this structure. Like any structure, different approaches can be used to make the final object. I hope you experiment with your ideas as they are good suggestions!

Stunning ❤ if you didnt want to finish as a scroll, how would the front cover be finished? Does the artist have a website? Thank you for posting such a wonderful video.

I don't understand, why do you glue the folio shut? If you left the top page open you then would have 2 more surfaces for text to be printed on.

Hi. Thanks for sharing your idea. Indeed not pasting the folio shut, will provide more area for text and imager. The beauty of the book structure is this type of flexibility. PLUS, not pasting the folio shut will reduce the amount of time it takes to make the book. Thanks again for your suggestion! -Jim

I checked for the exact materials. I purchased the paper several years ago. I am 99% sure the black paper is “Black Licorice 100 lb cover stock and the white is also from the same vendor. I buy lots of my paper from French Paper company. For this demo I used a cover stock 100 lb paper for the the white inside sheets of paper. I used PVC book adhesive to glue the pages together and a brush to apply the PVC. In Cindy’s book, she used a black handmade paper for the cover. Her image was copied onto photo copy paper. The cut portions of her drawing were added to similar white bond paper. I hope this is helpful. -Jim

This is interesting, but from the perspective of an album maker you are really doing this the hard way.
